Tinting and the goddamn law

Hey fellas. I got a quick question... For those of you riding around in 20% tints, have you been pulled over/ticketed for them? for those who have tints and haven't been pulled over.. what percent tints you guys have? i had 20% tints on my 330xi and i got stupid ass "equipment" ticket for them... i dont want to have the hassle of gettin tickets on my CL-S, i was wondering what % tints to get on them without having b.s. from cops.

cop told me that NY state law says 75% on the front two windows. 75% is way too high... i was considering getting 50% or 40%. any suggestions??

thanks in advance

get 5% all around and put a big sign that says "m4 on board" and see if you get ticketed.

Each state is different. I did 35% all around and sides are illegal in NJ, haven't been pulled over yet. But I want to get it changed to something darker.

damn i really wanna put 20% but my dad is gonna get pissed... he got pissed i put 20% on the bmw. b/c i got the ticket he took of the 20% on the front two windows... it looks kinda stupid right now.

you think 40% would be light enough to keep cops away?

NY is 72%.
You may consider going 50 or 35%, but I don't know how pissed off cops will be..

lol i know right

the cop came up to my ride with a light meter or whatever they call it... and he said NY state is 75% (anothercls im sure you're right its 72%, NY cops are dumb, they're known for pulling laws out of their ass)

75% is not even worth tinting. its ridiculous... i think i'll go with the 35%

FWIW I live in NY and have 20% on the back window and 35% on the sides and have never had a problem. Going darker on the rear makes the sides appear slightly darker even though they're still within the legal range....

Marc - that doesn't work, I was going to lunch with someone who has 5% on the back and 20% on the front sides and she got pulled over, even with the windows all the way down, the cop didn't have to see it cause he knew. Either way, some cops are complete dicks about it and others are nice about it.

Thats really what it comes down to. If they want to give you a ticket, they will. If they dont want to, they wont. I've been pulled over by 10+ cops in NJ. With my explorer that had 5% all around, I got 3 tickets, but 2 other cops didnt even mention it. With the CL, I've gotten pulled over about 5 times with 15% rear window, 35% on the sides been warned 3 times, the other two didnt even mention it. I've even sat next to cops at lights that looked right at me and didnt do anything about it.

I have 15% all around. Been to NY/NJ several times. No problems. However I did get 1 ticket in FL. State trooper looking to give tickets out. You know he pulls you over for BS then goes through your car & record just tring to find stuff to give tickets for. That was 3 years ago.

You can visit any state and not get a ticket, they can't force you to comply with the laws in the states you visit.

The funny thing about the woman is she waves to the cops and they see her waving, but they will end up giving her tickets anyway.

Well they could. I got a ticket in NY for a plate cover. (Had FL tags) I wrote a nice letting to the NY DMV & it was dismissed. Little infractions like tint & stuff you usually can get away with. I know other people who have gotten tickets in other states too.

Cops don't even slow down for tinting here in MD. 20% sides and rear here, no issues. They do, however, seem to enjoy harrassing me about the front license plate (or lackthereof).

I got 20% and I get pulled but never tickets (knock on wood well one in the past 3 yrs) mostly bc its in my own town and the cops know me. They usualy pull me over for my tints at like 3am-4am so it just a reason to get pulled. THere is one biotch in the town next to me who pulls me eveytime and gave me one ticket so far but shes got a seriosuly power problem and bc i give her an attitude all the time.

lol. cops always seen to have a power trip...

well thanks for the advice fellas. i think i'll go with the 35%... i sure like the look of 20% but i guess i'll have to settle with the 35%. $60 dollar tickets are really not my thing

i heard a story that a cop gave an equipment ticket for tints on a parked car. is that legal?? it somehow sounds illegal to me.. but i could be wrong

oh man... goddamn nassau county cops.

instead of doing actual good police work to earn their pay (
like $110,000) they annoy us good citizens for having tints. meanwhile cars get stolen left and right here in nassau... go figure...

lookin forward to seein your ride classy! im sure there is much i can learn from you

In Michigan, there is no limit on the rear window or the triangles. However, you can only have 4" from the top on the driver and passenger side windows. No limit on the amount either. I have 20% all the way around and the first night I was doing 55 in a 45 in Lansing, MI. The county cop got right on my ass and then I signaled and pulled into a 7-11. Cop didn't even get out, just pulled around.

I have not been pulled over since, knock wood!

Peace
