Timing Belt
Does anyone know when the timing belt should be changed? My owners manual does not show when this is to be done. I am now at 91,000mi. My dealer is saying that it should be done at 90,000mi. and wants over $1,000.00 for the service.
Jens, anyone. All opinions will be appreciated.

I got a 97 cl that just went past 90k miles. i think you should definitely get your timing belt changed aruond then. but 1000 bucks is way too steep. i got my 90k tuneup including timing belt, water pump, and other belts changed for 600 bucks. what you do is tell them you dont need oil and filter change that you can do yourself and you'll save money. but 1000 bucks is way too much for just a timing belt. i called my local honda repair shop rather than going to the dealership. hope that helps.

check the owners manual,, I believe it's around 105 or 107k miles for belt and plugs,, won't hurt to change early,,, the 1997 cl's are on a diff schedule,, Jen's might have knowlege of any early failures,,, but if the engineer designed it for 105k miles replacement there is a 20% protection built into that,, protects his butt,,,

I just had all of my belts INCLUDING timing done on a 98 at 90k Whole service cost me $675 I had it done at Ocean Acura in NJ, so whoever you are speaking to is ripping you off if a DEALER is cheaper

Whatever you do, DO NOT let it fail. Honda's are interference motors. When the timing belt breaks your valves and pistions will crash together...much more expensive than even a $1000 replacement. I paid $700 for t-belt and water pump on my Ledge through an independant mechanic. Shop around.

I have a related question...I'm at 67k and beginning to notice more noise when the AC pump kicks on--you can hear the engine labor more and that belt is loud when the pump kicks on. I was thinking about going to the autoparts store and getting that spray you use to quiet 'whiny' belts. Will this do anything or is this a sypmtom of things 'starting to go'?

Save money on the spray, hold a crayon on the belt as it is spinning, that will help quiet down the belt. As for is it a bigger issue, that I don't know, it might just need adjusting. I had to have my belts adjusted 2x before I hit 70k and replaced at 90
Obviously 70k and 90k were on the 98 CL, not the new one
