To those who have gone from auto to manual...

Do you really notice the power gains that the transmission offeres the car ? Is it a night and day difference to how nice it is ?

I have a family member who needs to purchase a reliable car . I offered my Taffeta White 01 CLS with 118k on the clock bone stock except 18" rims for $6000 . Accepted as long as she can get the loan . The car also comes with a warranty threw car max until 150k .

So I've found 2 possible connections to a 6 speed . One being a little beat up black on tan 122k miles. the other AM on ebony with 180k second owner beautiful car . 6k obo vs 7k .

Will I be impressed by the power gains and responsiveness of the car ? I really want a mt but I love my baby .

Please chime in ...

I just switched over from a auto to a 6 speed and I love it. I the best way it to go test drive one. If you like your auto cl you will definitely love the 6 speed.

Both cars are 4~5 hours away ... So I'd test drive it and have to take it home

Completely different car. If you have any interest in performance fun, definitely get the manual.

Total night and day difference. Remember that you're not just putting about 10% more power to the ground but you also don't have traction control budding in and you have a limited-slip differential helping to put that power to the ground.

ive driven my friends 03 TL-s6, and compared to auto cl its a hell of a lot more fun do drive. you really have more control of the car. i only drove the car once to the gas station so i didnt really get to notice any big differences.

i think you would really benefit if you plan on doing a lot of performance mods and wont have to worry about blowing the trans.

ive had my 02 cls auto for almost year know and i really wish i went for a m/t. so much more potential performance wise rather then an auto

at the end of the day tho the cl is not a performance kinda car.. it just doesn't turn well.. yes for what it has in it, straight line it's a killer ride. but as soon as you look for handling it's not to be found.

i have low pro tires, 18inch rims, coilovers, sway bars, end links... you name it... and still it handles like a boat... IMHO..

i'm not trying to shun the cl6.. i wish i had one too i think.. but if u look at what a cl is and can do... it does suit an automatic transmission.

put it this way... my ford probe.. PIECE of SHIT car.. i just put coilovers on it and i could get the tail to start letting go on corners... that is impossible on the cl.. that's why i unfortunately have to say the car will never be a sports car and is why i don't hate myself for driving an auto.

sorry fellas, it's just the truth.

I personally think it handles excellent FOR WHAT IT IS . Just like you said its still a boat though . I have a friend with a 1.8 escort gt 1991 and he can outhandle me all day with cheap springs and a sway bar . Yet my buddy with a 2001 focus with tons of suspension work gets lost in corners behind me .

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a 2003 am 6 speed cl . It has 180 on the clock but its a second owner car . 35 year old driver . All maintence records and original window sticker . WISH ME LUCK

It doesn't handle well for what it it. Plenty of heavier cars that still outhandle it. It's still wrong-wheel-drive. It's handling is neither luxurious or sporty. Too harsh to be luxury and too soft to be sporty.

Sorry but i have to say BULL SHIT! These cars can be made to handle really well. ESPECIALLY the 6 speed with the LSD. I have no trouble on the track with mine (2g tl with the cls-6 swap) , and even beat many RWD and AWD cars (have run with M3s and STIs) . If you have all those mods they are either cheap, not set up properly or you dont know how to drive (no offense)

If you're keeping up with M3s and STIs, they're clueless as to how to drive (or just not trying at all). Both of those cars can brake later into a turn and accelerate sooner out of a turn in addition to putting down more power than the CL/TL-S (unless you're talking old early '90s M3s, even then they'll eat a CL/TL-S at the track).

Forgot about the different in gearing. Much faster acceleration from the ratios in the 6-speed vs the auto.

No, for starters im not stock and they dont have the advantages you claim, I can brake every bit as late and corner every bit as fast. If you think they do then you need to take some time on a track and learn to drive fwd and the car (Take no offense, its just general information) many of the guys ive run with are some of the best drivers out there(some being certified by scca to train). Just about every one of them has asked how the car comes out of the corners so fast, and have driven it and about shit them selves on how well it handles. They all credit a lot of the handling to the LSD. You can simply plant your foot to the floor coming out of the turn and hook up and go.

Well I drove it and yeah it's awesome . But the car had bad paint , tires, and the interior was faded . Car never has seen a garage . 182k on the clock . KBB is 5200 in good condition ... I offered 5500 he said 6k or nothing so I did not buy it . Wasted tons of money and time in gas , and it rained the whole way to cali and the whole way home to vegas .

Sorry to hear Mike, just keep searching. Right now it seems like its a seller's marker since tax season is right around the corner.

Hang in there Mike, it'll be worth the wait. but you may have to leave the state to shop. I've had mine 9 years, flew to OK to get it.
I know the 6MT is hard to find in low miles good condition...like mine! just turned over 100k miles. very trouble free.
I'm shopping a ZDX to replace it and talk about rare, esp in the Advance trim and good colors. I know, very diff car than the CLS. want a change but I will def miss the CLS.

Who cares about how "bad" this car handles for what it is? Christ you guys sound like a bunch of whiners. I don't care how my car handles compared to how other cars do. I have THIS car, so I am going to make the best of it. Mike never said anything about thinking this car is a race car and one of the first comments is about how its not a performance car , "sorry its the truth". Who cares? Mike has love for this car and wants to possibly get another one. Just stop with the CL's downfalls, we all get it, you clowns have beat this horse into the ground a long time ago. It sucks hearing about how "shity" your car is compared to other ones. Its fun as hell and thats all that matters at the end of the day. If the car is so "lame" and such a "bad handler" then sell it and get one of those "better cars".

So Mike do what you feel is right man, the 6mt is amazing though and you wont be disappointed.

*This post is not directed at anyone in particular, these comments have been popping up all over, sorry If i offended anyone, I didn't mean too just frustrated.

sorry fellas, it's just the truth.
the Tail of my CL loves stepping out all the time, I hardly ever have understeer, I only have understeer under power, but with my nsx brakes up front, I have gone around a couple of times, if this was a rear wheel drive car I would say it would be on par with a bmw handling wise.

But I also have stocks suspension, which I think is better for the track cause it allows the car to rotate.

"Nobody" has a 6 speed cls thats properly modded . You've seen maybe 10 on this site out of the 3800~ they made . Automatics are plentiful , just like the guy said that I almost bought one from .

I can go buy a 2013 STI for 35xxx and be just like any other douche . No I want something someones gonna go "wtf is that car ? damn it sounds good , looks good , feels good, and looks like you've put alot of love into it " That is what I want ....

I personally think that the car is just one of the top 10 cars ever produced . Especially because of its rareness . Don't get my wrong I'd drive a 07 tls6 if they were cheaper , but those are plentiful too .

3G tls 6speed is a little rare, not as rare as the 03 cls6 but close. I love mine....

Found another , black on black salvage title 115k . $6500

How should I feel that I just now paid off the automatic , paid over 10k in 2012 and now if I buy the manual the auto will be sold for like 4500 if I/m lucky ?

There was a supercharged CLS6 in Baltimore Craigslist earlier this month for $6K. Might be a trip but just thought I'd let you know.

Well , I found another potential car . Black on black , lowered on coils , looks like it has retrofitted fogs . 6500 I got him to 6k already . But once again I'd have to go to Cali , around 8 hour drive . Car has salvage title "theft" and 115k on the dash .

Opinions ?

I would hold off, sounds like it's got bad news written all over it. You could get a clean title'd car for that price. I know you want a 6 speed badly, but be patient and don't do anything you may regret in the future. Something is bound to come up

I would not buy a salvage vehicle (Learned from experience). Did he provide any proof to show that it is a theft recovery? If a single vin number is missing from any panel assume it was in a accident which caused the salvage title. for that price you can buy a clean title 6 speed. Just keep looking, you'll find a better one.

Just my opinion.

I just wish i had the 6 speed so I could hang with my friends turbo carsThe J is such a good motor .

All these salvaged cars popping up and asking $6k plus makes me wonder if I can get more for mine.

OR those guys are delusional ()

My original CL Type-S was a 2001. I left it completely stock. I never cared much for the sport shift auto.

Then in Jan 2003, I saw the CL 6MT commercial on TV (you know, the one with the guy having visions of driving up the hill to his future new home :-) ). The following month, I traded my 01 in for my current 03 6MT.

NIGHT & DAY!!!

The 6MT transforms the car into a much different car than the auto. Quicker, smoother, sportier.

The 6MT will inspire you to spend lots of $$$ on mods. LoL ... but true!!!

ok mike, plenty of decent options, now go buy one

little high on miles, but looks to have been well cared for. a bit far, but shipping across country shouldn't cost you more than $500-$1K, depending if you want open trailer or enclosed trailer. For reference I paid $700 for enclosed to ship this car from FL to TX.

Here's another, already modified some, but appears well cared for as well and I'm not sure, but guessing it might be a member here?

is this the one in Cali you are looking at?

on the east coast but looks decent:

this seems like a good deal, for the miles and price, but is it me or does the hood not sit flush on the first pic? might be worth a look...and serious homework.

if you can get them to knock off $1k or more, this might be worth a look:

Now the ad description is a bummer, but a white/black 6 speed here in Austin....when I first saw the ad it took a while to get to the 'Salvage Title' part and I already had plans on selling mine and buying this one lol....but salvage title is enough to scare me away. The seller description of the reason for salvage might be ok for you to consider it, so here goes:

if it was clean, it likely would have been mine!

And get this, I found yet another white/black 6 sp in Austin. This one however looks ok and worth a serious look. I already called and left them a voice mail and will let you know what I find, in the event I don't buy it first

Anyhow good luck Mike!

Austin doing the legwork for you, lol!

I must say though, what the hell is up with that last one you posted? It has all the signs of an 01-02 (wheels, door handles, lights. bumper lights, mirrors, exhaust tips) yet has a 6 speed and 03 interior. WTF lol, Maybe Honda used that one as one of the testers or something, because I would doubt it's swapped. Looks too stock otherwise
