Third Brake Light Rattle Fix

After doing a search and reading almost all of the post dealing with this issue, all of the pictures have either expired or are no longer hosted. Would anyone know if the fix for this requires pulling the whole rear deck, or if you can access the portion rattling on the brake light from the trunk area?

Just for clarification purposes, mine sounds more like a metal rattle than a plastic rattle. I'm assuming this is the bottom of the brake light rattling its ass off to where it's mounted (from what I've read).

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Someone should do an updated rear deck removal and rattle fix DIY. I can't turn up my music with out hearing the anoying rattle, and I don't even litsen to rap. Also does anyone see any problems with removeing the rear deck and just leaving it removed? Is there mostly metal plating under it, or can you get into the trunk area with it removed? I have to remove it to tint my rear windshield in the spring anyway.Thoughts plz

There's a write up on removing the rear deck and replacing it with a piece of cardboard with some sort of matching vinyl lining over the top of it. That's a little extreme for my tastes. I'm not sure I even need to remove the rear deck to stop the third brake light from rattling. It might be able to be accessed through the trunk - anyone with knowledge of this please let me know.

First, check the trunk torsion bars. The retainer sometimes breaks.

If thats not it, Im not sure how to fix the rattle aside from putting Dynamat on the rear deck.

I actually did check that first. It appears the tension bars are still attached as normal. The tab feels a little weak, but it shouldn't be clanking around.

its just a big sheet for metal under there that stretches across the area of the deck. your speakers will be exposed too since the speaker grills are attached to the deck.

and if OP wishes to tighten the 2 bolts under the third brake light from the trunk, dont over tighten it cause its just plastic. I over did mine and the plastic broke. Its no big deal if it does break but just an FYI

Did you actually have to pull the rear deck though to put something underneath the brake light? I know pulling the rear deck is a timely project since you have to remove the rear seats etc.

Any way to get some spray foam in there without taking the rear shelf out?

you can lift up the deck without removing it but you would still have to go through most of the removal proceedure. Its not too bad though, just need an hour or so and basic tools.

By basic removal procedure, do you mean removing the seats?

Rear seats and deck both need to be removed to get to the third brake light assembly. Once everything is removed, some sticky back craft felt cut to fit the area that touches the rear window will eliminate any rattling. Also, since everything is removed back there, some felt, sound damper, or rubber washers for the rear deck speakers will eliminate any vibrations coming form the rear speakers.

Maybe get some dynomat and put back there. I need to get some for my trunk lid because the emergency release and spoiler rattle the most.

my 3rd BL on my 1G CL was held in with 4 x 10 mm bolts, all I had to do was lay on my back and remove the 4 bolts and the brake light popped up and out

The rear deck liner actually covers the taillight portion unlike the 1G's. The bulb is accessable through the trunk, but the housing itself is not.
