A CVT can be programmed for 100 "fixed" ratios if someone really wanted to...
And, their are rumors about taking a variant of the F1 7-speed SMG and producing a road going version.
The Ferrari's 575M Maranello already had a killer six-speed electro hydraulic transmission-control and unlike the BMWs M3 SMGII, will shift faster than the nerve conduction times of most humans... (I want one!).
6-speed automatic links (ZF city -- hey?)

ZF AG -- see links to CVTs, 5/6speed autos, manuals, etc.

(There are some better pictures around on some of the BMW web sites – this is from the ZF page.)
BTW – there are other problems, but the low-torque handling of a CVT can be worked-around by up and down gearing around the CVT proper (and it has it’s own drawbacks), but…

but 7 speed manual seems a bit unrealistic
i even think 6 speed is much much enough for cars today...even F-1 cars only has 6 front speed ..but f-1 cars have up to 18000 rpm

The 2002 Ferrari F1 has 7 forward speeds. And there are slow-speed turns where they are way off 18K (more like 6-10K).
Once that box has "automatic control" and the shift speeds get down in the 20-80ms shift range, it really helps to keep the engine on the HP power peak...
Number of speeds: 7 + reverse.
