Test drove a 2003 CL Type S with Major Problem

Guys,

background: I am looking for either a 2003 TL or CL 3.2 Type S.

Story: I was test driving a few cars and one of them was a 2003 Type S CL, less then 50K miles on it 6 speed of course. The car felt awesome, better then a 5 speed TL i would say, but here is the kicker. When i would bring the car to a complete stop it would vibrate like a real bastard. I felt like the wheel was giving me a hand massage.

Any ideas on what this could be? Is it a common issue with a CL?

Just want your thoughts.

If you mean while you were braking the brake rotors are bad. common but generally not a major problem..

Typical warped rotors like 6SPEED said. Not a big deal.

Yea nothing but warped rotors, make them resurface them before you buy the car. I just got mine done the other day and it's like night and day when you brake.

If your coming to a stop yeah warper rotors.
If your stopped & it virbrates......Some vibration is normal. I've felt it on every 6mt CL I've driven, some are worse then others. If it really shakes, like the wheel & the seats & teh car feels like it wants to stall, it could have a bent valve cause by over reving the engine.(downshifting into wrong gear & high speed)

it could be that the engine mounts are shot, although i wouldnt expect that from a 50k miles, but my cl at about 100k miles had all the mounts shot, and when you stop it would shake like crazy, after changing all the mounts it was like new not even a zip, also i got at not mt

Hey folks, thanks for all the replies.

Yeah its not the rotters, that would be an easy thing to figure out. This car had the probably when i was at a dead stop with it.

I am just making sure there is nothing common you guys have heard off that makes the car give me a hand massage.

AT A complete stop

I think he meant the car had a rough idle after he came to a complete stop

thats a really rough idle... if its not the rotors vibrating the whole damn thing while you're stopping then I'd have to say the motor mounts... after that, I guess just go get a real good tuneup to make sure nothings wrong with the J

well you have stated that it was at a stop and not coming to a stop so it is not the rotors. if the car is in very nice condition, I seriously doubt it is the mounts as well. you would probably hear them banging when shifting. actually just look at the mounts for a brown fluid if you dont see it they are probably fine. If the car ran strong as hell I agaoin doubt it is a bent valve as I think you would be gettng a check engine light if that were the case. I would think you probably got into a car that hasnt been driven in quite a while. even if that is not the case it is more than likely the IAC Idle Air Control. this is a common and known prob with the idle on the J32A2 motor and can be fixed with and new one for about $100. In addition you could have a dirty intake manifold. my 6speed had a rough idle and I ran a seafoam through the intake and Techron through the gas tank, installed new plugs and all is well now. MY POINT, it is more than likely the IAC and a combination of not being run every day(sitting on a lot) and an intake that hasnt been serviced in 50000 miles. i cleaned mine at 75000 and had large chunks of deposits that I had to pick out of the upper intake with a coat hanger.

Here is a dumb question, but if the car is lowered can the dealer refuse to put in new motor mounts? Can the springs cause this damage?

My guess is that the dealer wouldn't turn away business. Theyll probably install the mounts for you but they might guarantee warranty on them because of your mods. I see it more like you taking your car in for an oil change. Just because your car is lowered doesn't mean that your local oil change garage is gonna turn you away. What it is though is they can always blame your mods if their parts DO go bad.

Exclamation Slotted And Drilled

If youre going to race your car hard, just buy the right crap. Buy performance rotors that are slotted and drilled so that its protectd from heat build up that cause damage to rotors.

Is that true in all cases?

You responded (kindly enough) to my post last week when I was looking for advice on whether to buy a CL or TL (because of transmission issues). Your response said that not all trannys fail. I followed up by speaking with a service tech at an Acura dealership who told me that "most" do. Both on the TL and CL's...

I am very perplexed at the moment because I am seriously considering not purchasing a used Acura now. Unfortunately, I don't like any other vehicle out there. I don't even like the new TL's as much as the old CL's and TL's. If you or anyone has a bit of sage advice for me, I am still looking for feedback.

I am just trying to educate myself so I can make an informed decision.

Thanks again - Acuranut919
