Taking off the governer( speed limiter)

After 1 month of driving the a Buick.
I get my baby girl back this weekend.

My question is
Has anyone successfully taken off the governer on their Cl.
I wanted to know because I dont get out of 3rd until I'm over 90
My 5th gear seems wasted.

there is only has a top speed limiter and to my knowledge, nobody here has removed it. what you're describing is being gear limited.

No; it's not a stand-alone unit that you can just take out.

5th gear is for cruising only; it's not geared for acceleration. Your 5th gear isn't wasted.

5th gear is setup as an overdrive gear, meant for cruising and better fuel economy.

once you hit 158 in a CL, you go back to the future!

yes you do...becuase it's only capable of 147+/- due to the speed limiter

I took my CL to 140 one day, took me several hours to calm down again.

you need it to power the flux capacitor.

If you can't hit 147, then why do you even need the governor taken off?

It's physics. The wheels can't spin any faster than the gearing allows for based upon the engine RPM. Nothing to do with a ECU programmed speed limiter.

so is it just kholla's car that can't hit 147? Or are all CL's not able to go that fast?

I hit 147 several times. I do 3 digit speeds all the time. Shouldn't be afraid of high speeds. Nothing wrong with them. It's when you do them that matters.

And it's pronounced 'GIGA' too (with a hard 'G', like Gigabyte).

But it sounds funnier saying Jigga.

I actually thought the car was aerodynamically limited, in that at about 147mph, 4th gear isn't maxxed, but the engine/gearing can't physically push anymore against the air resistance.

Anyone with SC or headers or something get past 147?

You can't go past 147 no matter how much horsepower you have!!

It's programmed in the ECU at 147 based on the OEM tire rating.

At least in the 6spd its not a gearing or HP limit, nor is it a aerodynamic limit. I hit the limiter when my car was stock and was still slowly picking up speed. I know I shouldn't be going that fast, but I wanted to say I did it and now I drive a lot slower

Might not work on the CLS, but I have gotten around speed limiters in the past by disconnecting the speed sensors. Your speedo won't work & you will get a code. But the limiter will be bypassed, at least on a stick shift. Most auto's need a speed sensor in order to shift.

In that case he won't know if he has exceeded the speed or not

After 110...speeding up slows significantly for me...

After I shift to 4th, 110-120 accel is really really slow...and 120+ well...yeah...

I haven't gotten to anything past 138 in my car even after a long stretch on Beltway 8 around here...hmmm...

he could max out the car and take note of the rpm at which the governor kicks in and use that as a mark before disconnecting any sensors. of course this is assuming the tach is not affected.

sure, he won't know his speed, but he'll know if the max speed by the governor is exceeded.

Correct. Tach should still work, but I've never tested it on a CL.

That's because 4th and 5th gear are overdrive gears.

This post is funny..
I've had my 01 CL-S to 135 and it felt like it still had plenty of pull, the guy driving just didn't have the balls to find out
