hehe, but seriously...
What the site truly needs is donations... and sponsors.
No banners: Mainly because I don't want this to turn into an egyptian market lookin place like some of other car sites.
No membership fees: Why? Because half of our members wouldnt sign up. Look at how many of you whined about the $20 a year for PhotoPoint. lol
So... if anyone here would like to provide some sort of sponsorship for the forum in exchange for some strategic ad/product placement (ie. no blatant banners) then e-mail me: soopa@acura-cl.com.
If you are a brilliant sales/marketing type guy... and you wanna help us out in securing sponsorship... email me.
If you are just a schmuck like me who cant stand having more then the $5.00 minimum balance in his savings account... then feel free to donate a couple bucks to the cause via PayPal... soopa@acura-cl.com as the recipient.
Or... if you have access to hardware for our server... let me know...
We need:
Dual CPU motherboard
Two Pentium Processors
Like 512mb of ram.
and a decent sized SCSI drive
We have hosting covered thanks to our friend WebToker and his associates at INSYNC.net.
So that covers the bases I think.
Oh... Sypher... I like your links section... shoot me an e-mail if your interested in doing some webmaster type stuff for the site.

I think banners would be OK if there is no other way. Making this a pay site would drive others away, but one lousy banner should be fine. Stangnet has a banner and it isn't too bothersome. But, I think along with the banner a better job of eliminating jerkoff posts should be done. Delete trolls. Check out mbworld.org.

I think the biggest problem with charging a fee is that you wont get a lot of new people. Why would you pay money to chat.
I think if we opened this up for donations and everybody put in a 5 or 10 bucks, then we should be fine. I mean this would make more sense than putting up banners or charging a flat fee.
I dont mind paying a fee personally , but we will loose a lot of potential new people.

I think donations should be encouraged by
giving the donators some kinda perk. How
about uh, larger avatars based on how much
you pay? That would rule!
People can race to get the biggest avatar!
How about charging 5 cents per post-whore post? There's a couple of guys who could
fund the entire web site for ya. :P
If you can get a rough estimate of working costs to maintain the site, i am sure you shouldn't have problem getting donations.
I don't think people will mind coughing up $5 for the good of this wonderful group!
I don't know if it would be financially viable, but wouldn't a raffle be awesome?
Like say, $50 per entry into a raffle for say, headers? Perhaps along with the headers, installation would be free?
I'm willing to bet you'd get enough entries to pay for the headers and then some!

I know alot of people here refre autocarparts.com and xepherperformance so I suggest , even tho it looks like crap we get an ad banner for Xepherperformance under Xepher's fourm and else where we get the autocarparts.com banner and any other banner that will generate some revenue for this site.
Since most of you don't like sending cash or paypal this is a good way.
I know if we put an ad banner i would click it everytime before I hit the refresh button. meaning over 400 times a day. and 10 cents each for a click would be 40 dollars just from me.
CLicking on it wouldn't be manditory but just out of respect, since this whole site is being paid by soopa's pocket.
Just a consideration.
Who wouldn't mind a banner?

I'm not going to read all 3 pages of responses but in case somebody else hasn't mentioned it.
Just start selling t-shirts, stickers, license plate frames, coffe mugs, etc. if he really wanted to make some money for the site. Club-si does it so they can support their site. I forget who they use as the supplier but there are plenty of internet businesses that will set it up for you.

Perhaps a raffle, 10 bucks an entry, for a $1000 dollar gift certificate to autcarparts.com or another Acura product site. Maybe these sites will give you a discount on the actual cost of the gift certificate (like 850 for a 1000 dollar one) saving you even more money. This is of course assuming you get over 100 entries (I'll buy at least 2 or 3 entries) and that it's handled right (no cheating).

Boy I had a nasty thought -- whatever idea comes along -- it should be an idea that produces "continuous" revenue.
Assumption -- congestion slows up increase in board membership and usage. So, adding new hardware allows for nice fast connection. Now a bunch of new people come along.
The new server is going to reach a point where it needs to be upgrades, as did the last ones. So, while it is a great idea, and I'm willing to contribute to help get new hardware, but at what speed is this site growing. And how is the "congestion" influencing the site's usage.
Wouldn't a "growth" oriented revenue model be in everyone's best interest?
Just a thought...
BTW -- I don't mind contributing, I just thought about this over the holiday.

Besides the hardware, what OS is prefered to hosting this web page? I see it's currently being hosted on a FreeBSD machine with Apache/1.3.19. Is this the type of platform it would be kept on? How many hits a day on average does the site get? What's the internet pipeline that will be used?
We have 30 Dell servers in our group at work and I feel mixed with their reliability. I think it may be because they are older models. We just received 16 of the 1550 rack moutable 1U servers and one died after 3 days. It ended up being a power supply so it wasn't that bad. They are Dual PIII 1 GHz with 1 GB ram and a 10k U160 18 GB seagate cheetah drive. My overall opinion is that they are very snappy compared to our older units. They have the ServerWorks HE-SL Chipset which I've heard good reviews on. You can also get them with redhat Linux if you want to go that route, or you can get 2 of them and form a MS Cluster pair running windows 2000 Advanced Server and have a more reliable solution. If done right I'd say linux would be a little more secure/reliable.
The Dell 1550 would run about $5,353.00 according to Dell and would have:
2x 1GHz Pentium III Processors
1024 MB Ram (2x 512 Dimms)
2x 36GB 10K hard drives (mirrored possibly?)
Intel Pro 100 Dual NIC
24X CD-ROM
Linux Redhat 7
Our Compaq's at work have been very reliable, although I've never been a huge fan of Compaq in the past.
My work buys so many servers I could find out if there is any deal through compaq, or dell if people want that.
Figure the amount of people here, and try to get donations from everyone.
1000 people x $5-$10....
I'd be willing to donate money if I knew it were going to a server to run this forum.

My work buys so many servers I could find out if there is any deal through compaq, or dell if people want that.
Figure the amount of people here, and try to get donations from everyone.
1000 people x $5-$10....
I'd be willing to donate money if I knew it were going to a server to run this forum.
