Supporting Soopa and the fourm

As you all know this site grows at a great rate. Always getting new members and topics.

So of course, looking from a systems point of view it is obvious we need more space (harddrive) faster site (bandwidth, processor)

So it is only fair that we do some kind of contribution.

I know alot of people here refre autocarparts.com and xepherperformance so I suggest , even tho it looks like crap we get an ad banner for Xepherperformance under Xepher's fourm and else where we get the autocarparts.com banner and any other banner that will generate some revenue for this site.

Since most of you don't like sending cash or paypal this is a good way.

I know if we put an ad banner i would click it everytime before I hit the refresh button. meaning over 400 times a day. and 10 cents each for a click would be 40 dollars just from me.

CLicking on it wouldn't be manditory but just out of respect, since this whole site is being paid by soopa's pocket.

Just a consideration.

Who wouldn't mind a banner?

Sounds good, it'll also eliminate the questions for where to get aftermarket parts from.

As much as I hate banners, I wouldnt mind them in this situation...I think they would be helpful for the vendors as well. Almost everything I know about my car is from this forum!

I’m all for helping out Soopa, but I don’t think “clicking on a banner 400 times” is the answer to our problems.

Ad banners are designed to siphon off traffic to a certain website to generate revenue from a sale.
If the Xephyr website gets 1,000 hits a day and it only generates 2 sales, HE is the one paying out all the ad referral fees for nothing.

My idea:
Charge like 10 bucks a year (PayPal) for something like a “BONUS” or “GOLD” membership.

You have to pay in order to read certain “private” areas of the forum or even have a custom avatar.
Maybe get a BOLD name title or a GOLD star by your name.
Maybe allow only upgraded accounts to post more the 5-times a day or something like that.

I don’t know if the software could handle this or not, but it’s just a few ideas.

Totally agreed Sean
I would rather pay a yearly fee than let this site become bannered. That is the reason I love this site. As for acura-tl.com it has become a banner frenzy, I personally hate it there.

I actually don't mind the banners, but I also like Shawn's ideas. I would pay a fee like that. Then, like he said, we can have access to private forums, or maybe get deals with companies associated with acura-cl.com (like Xephyr, etc.)....

I agree, working out deals with companies for Acura-CL.com referrals would be nice, even if they're minimal, but many people get their info and decide what to buy based on opinions from this board. A couple banners wouldn't be bad either, but not too many, just a very select few, like the ones already mentioned.

A PAY SITE!!!!!!! NO F'N WAY! The fact this site is free is what is so great about it. I"m all for helping out Soopa, but a pay site noo way. It would reduce the number of people who come here and reduce the varity of people. Has Soopa expressed the need for help? What type of support does he need? Money to maintain the domain name? More money to handle bandwith? Have a mix. One banner add, paypal for those who want to contribute, and some sort of collection at CL-Meets. Keep it free!!!!!!!!

We should do something. I never post here, but read the board almost everyday. I plan on buying a CL later this year and now know EVERYTHING to look for when making the purchase.

Why not have a sale for t-shirts? It's a little more of a pain, but you can make pretty nice t-shirts for about $4-6 and sell them at...say 15.

The only problem is making sure you have a large group ready to buy and getting the money upfront to buy the shirts.

There is a site that will front the money and make the shirts and ship them for you, but they take a large chunk of profit (each shirt at cost is 13.99 + what you want your cut to be). The advantage is no problems with the e-commerce side, plus you can change the shirt every so often when the design needs changing

Just a thought...

-Mike

I agree somewhat with the banner idea, as long as it doesn't get out of hand....In one of my other posts I proposed some time of organization to this board (Ie: people volunteering time to form alliances and business relationships between the members of this board and aftermarket part suppliers, as well as Acura North America)....We can use our lobbying power to get the supplier's to listen to our needs and provide us with what we need (Ie: bodykits, superchargers, etc...)

We can also form advertising relationships with major vendors (Comptech, Eibach, AEM, etc.) and get them to advertise on the board - Perhaps a good idea is to have a "VENDOR's CORNER" which could be used as a reference point to those interested in ordering parts online....(This would eliminate a lot of the "What kind of headers are available for the CL? or "Is there a bodykit?"

I know I could personally volunteer my talents and make some calls and represent the fine members of this fine board....

what do you guys think??

The Vendor's Corner idea is great, that way all manufacturers have a spot on the site where interested people can check out their products and at the smae time we avoid flooding all the forums with banners.

Soopa and this site have saved me the mind-bending boredom of my senior year in high school so I personally would not mind PayPal-ing him some money.

$5-10 probably, $15 at MOST.

a banner w/ 10 cent clicks? Where? Please let me know if this exists. Also, those banners are limited to ONE unique ip address hit per day. If 10 cents per click with no restriction on IP addresses, then I would put a banner on my site, quit work, and click all day long for some serious money!

More realistic is 2-5 cents per click, per unique ip address. I think everyone should send soopa, 50 cents via paypal. With 2000+ members, thats over $1000 per month which will serve the purpose for a dedicated server with unlimited bandwidth for this website. Actually all he should actually need is about $500/month.

BTW...why are you telling us to do this? Where is Soopa himself?!?!?

Right now I am hosting the site. We have gone through 2 servers alreay and the load is only going to grow. We can not keep this site up if we do not get help somewhere. Right now I am in the position to provide management, bandwidth, and rack space. What I can not do is provide a server. Soopa is working on this now but if anyone has any high, and I mean high, level connections with Compaq, Sun Microsystems, or Dell it would be cool if you could come foward. We need a solid server. Something that will not have any hardware issues and have plenty of power.

Let's get real guys. We have grown up and now need to get this site onto a real platform and "out of the garage."

Webtoker has the space and the access but not the hardware. Soopa and the mods have the mental capacity to manage the site. We need funding.

My advice is to select 2-3 core sponsor advertisers (Park and autocarparts and ?) who will be happy with the references and be able to support the site in some fashion financially.

I've been working on a Links area for this site (without approval so far, but I'm hoping to hear from Soopa). I'd be willing to host the links area on my hardware and even have http://www.acura-cl.com/links be its address.

If Soopa likes the idea, we could offer special membership that gives companies or individuals a special link in the Links areas, or maybe rotate through the paid members as Today's Featured Link.

If you want to see what I've done so far on the Links section, you can see it at http://www.sypher.com/cl/ . I'm not showing any links yet, and I still have a lot of background code to add...

If there is interest in this, I can finish the Links stuff this weekend. Otherwise, it was just fun for me to play around with the idea.

You guys are so short sighted.

We either need revenue for hardware, or a reduction in bandwidth, and load right?

I propose a fee of $1 per post. And a fee of 25 cents/post on the current post counts.

With the amount of Comptech mods purchased by the members of this forum, you would think they would be compelled to support us.We all want to know what they are up to anyway.

Dell does have a "partnering" program. They were very big into this before the "dot com crash". I don't know what the current status is of today.

Someone mentioned banner ads -- if Dell (or whoever) was aware of the amount of traffic being generated via this site, they may be willing to pop for a server.

Are we talking about 2 processors, quad Xeons, or what. And what kind of support hardware are we talking about?

I'm asking, since I haven't a clue as to the bandwidth/load requirements, but I've seen the Pentium III systems with going for rather cheap prices. Do you need 4-channel Raid-5 with 15K RPM SCSIs, and 2 gigs of memory?

I've already responded that I would be willing to support a nominal fee, maybe we could even get Xepher to support a "raffle" of sorts.
