Supercharger owners

Question - if you had the opportunity to get a complete Turbo system (incl. blow off valve, s-afc, etc.) installed for $4k, would you still have gotten the supercharger? I ask because I found a tuner shop that has already installed a complete turbo kit on a 3.2L and will do it for that price.

Hell no, ...that is TOO SWEET of a deal!

But, you know what they say, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is!"

I want a complete system:

Somthing liket the one was done by All_motor. Including the thermal wraps (or swain coating). 3 Gauges, Boosting, Tranny Fluid Temp, and digital Wideband O2 sensor that tracks lean/rich conditions.. Oh... yeah a digital boost controller witha turbo timer!

Cool.

I'll get them to write it down then we can compare notes tomorrow. To be quite honest I don't know all of the componets of a complete turbo system. They say its complete but we'll see.

They would be supplying a used turbo, rubber oil hoses and no intercooler...

Every time I hear about a VAFC being used on this type of car with forced induction I know they are full of it!!!

But to answer the question, it depends on who is supplying the kit. If it is from some shop that has no real customer support, no detailed instructions, no warranty support, etc. then no. If it is from someone who will stand behind the product no matter what, has their own test vehicle which has many miles on the system, etc. then yes.

If I wanted a chop job I would make a custom system myself.

If I were to choose I would stiock with Comptech. They have been more than helpful support wise and will warranty their parts. They have a big name to support and will not leave any owner high and dry. As an example, look at Allmotor2000's experience with them about the clutch issue. Even though it wasn't their fault they wanted to make sure so they went through the motions and followed up. They could have just told him to fuck off. When it comes to something as important as forced induction I wouldn't go with anyone but a real pro. Any idiot who knows how to turn a few bolts can open up a shop. Very few though have a following of customers and build a name for themselve and actually stick around.

BTW: a custom fabricated manifold itself will generally cost between 800 to 1200. That combined with the fact that a brand new high quality turbo will generally cost near the same price range of 1000-1500, there is no way a quality kit with all parts necessary could cost 4 grand. You've gotta have R&D money, isntallation money, tuning time, and just other labors themselves at average shop price would make things topple over 6.5K or so.

If you were to do all the work and research yourself then MAYBE you could shave it under 5K

It's an expensive undertaking and I doubt anybody would do a one-off kit for $4K unless they are:

(1) Using a remanufactured turbo
(2) Mild-steel piping (cracks easily and isn't strong)
(3) Not-upto-snuff fuel control mods
(4) No guages, boost control, temperature-control stuff

I could be wrong... but then again I'd like to see the HP output. If they claim to boost > 6psi... they are full of it because this car will detonate like crazy even with an IC on 91-93 octane.

okay I've got some answers

I went back to the shop. The manager says it'll cost over $5k now. I have a pic of the work order. He says the Turbo is tunable up to 20 PSI. He also said I should run it up to 10 PSI, (for 100 whp) but I told him that CT only set their supercharger at 4.5 PSI. He'd also put the battery in the trunk. He only suggested the injectors for more than 10 PSI, but I told I wouldn't go over 10. 10 days work. If someone will host the pic we can all see the work order.

Run away very quickly!!!

20 PSI on a 10.5:1 CR motor on pump gas...

So how would he propose to control the larger injectors??

I see a problem which is alerting. The VAFC can't be used with our cars and forced induction. It alters the MAP signal to do its thing. However our MAP cannot see positive manifold pressures which eliminates the VAFC function.

Not knowing this is cause for serious alarm.

Well elimate the VAFC, & the cheap exhaust, & it comes to $4494 with tax. Sounds like a cheap home made one car fits all type of setup.

$375 for a VAFC is highway robbery. But then again the catback exhaust is only $270.

I'd run too...There's a shop here in Jax that would make a custom kit running 6psi, but it would take 4 days to do and cost over $7k...Granted they'll push the turbo for total performance, and I've seen many examples of their work, but it is comforting when the same guy looks and says: I would rather talk you into getting the Comptech s/c which I'll install in two days for a total of $4700 o/t/d...

Yeah, when I was up in MD a guy at "altered atmosphere" told me he could custom build a turbo system for about $5-6.5K, but recommended getting the SC too. 'Cause he could make short work of installing that. But turbo's are so much more efficient.
