suggestions on oil changes

I was wondering how often you guys change your oil? The car manual says every 7500 in normal conditions but the dealer suggests every 3000. Is it because the dealer just wants to make a little more money. My brother suggests every 5,000 (somewhere inbetween the two). I hardly ever drive my car hard (not the racing type); I'd say a good 85-90% of my driving is highway miles since I commute quite a distance to work. Any suggestions on the frequency would help.

Thanks,

Sirira

I change mine every 5000 miles, and if I will put Mobile 1 Oil, I will be chaning it every 7500 miles. Eventhough I am sure 7500 miles will do for regular oil as well.
Listen to my advice, dont waste your money for every 'suggestion' that Acura dealership makes. If I were you I would ONLY follow your owner's manual suggested maintance intervals. Dont waste your money, its not worth it.
Remeber that their goal is to make money.

If you use synthetic, then 7500 or a little more is ok. I believe most folks average 6000 with synth or which is a good weekend to change oil.

IMO the oil is not the problem, it's the dirt build-up in the oil, so will also need a good filter. Honda (japan) is the best, if you can find it, then mobil-1, then stp/bosch/Purolator. I use stp/bosch to save $$ and mobil-1 oil.

Any opinion on castrol synth??

I would go with 5000 miles on regular oil, and 7500 miles on synthetic Mobile 1. ( Provided that you drive your car under normal dirving conditions ).
I just think its a waste of money to change oil more often then recomended. I am just going to stick to manufacture MINIMUM required maintance.

Man, you got to be crazzy to change synthetic oil every 2500 miles. Are you planning to keep your car for 20 years or something ?? It will probably break because of some other problems, its just a waste of money which does not buy you anything ...

I've actually heard that it is bad to change your oil more often than every 3000 miles. Not sure why, but I've heard it from a few different sources. Can anyone confirm/explain this?

Unless you can change the oil filter between every 7.5K oil change (if you'll use synthetic), it's better to then use standard oil and replace the oil and filter every 3000.
There is no documented facts that I have seen about frequent oil changes causing damage.
I use Mobil Syn. and change it every 3000.

Synthetic changed every 15,000 miles. And I'll bet anyone here $1,000 I won't have a single oil-related engine problem before I sell the car at 200,000 miles.

Well 2500 miles comes at about 4-5 months for me since its my weekend car. Anyways, its a little bit of money and I wouldn't want the engine to get messed up later. As for your question on "are you planning to keep your car for 20 years or something?", my answer would be that at least I know that I haven't cut corners with the car in terms of maintainence and hope that whoever buys it will do the same. I've confirmed it with my BMW dealer and they said that changing it at 2500 miles/4-5 months is good for the engine.

I also have very low mileage, and keep cars a long time. I change the oil every 2000-3000 miles (Mobil 1) or every 6 months.

I've always changed fluids on a regular basis and never had problems with engines.

I call it cheap insurance.

Use Mobil 1 Tri-synthetic. Wal-mart has it for like $3/quart.

Use only SAE 5W-30 weight. It does improve fuel economy. And if you do use Mobil 1 tri-synthetic, change your oil every 8000-10,000 miles..about 7000miles or less if you tow heavy machinary daily.

If you feel guilty, change your oil filter every 3500 miles. But the Mobil 1 tri-synthetic shouldn't break down so quickly...and shit, you are paying up the ass if you change synthetic every 3500miles..even for that fake shit Castrol Syntec.

Mobil 1 is used exclusively by Mercedes Benz AMG, Porsche, Dodge vipers, corvettes...it's really that good.

Since I like to spend as little time as possible in a shop, I have mine done approx every 3750 miles. 3750 is half of 7500, the recommended tire rotation schedule. 7500 is half of 15000, which is a minor service but includes a tranny fluid change. 15000 is half of 30000, which is a biggie including tranny fluid and cooling system. So I have something done every 3750 miles, whether its just an oil/filter change or more.
