Stock radio upgrade
Hello all,
I'm thinking of updating my non navi audio system and wondering if anyone else has done this already. I'm looking to take out the double din head unit and put in a touchscreen system with nav and backup camera. What I'm wondering is all the systems I have looked at, whether 6.2" or 7" screen, they are all rectangular, but the stock stereo 'plate' tapers from top to bottom. If anyone has done a change like this, would love to hear and see what you have done. Thanks.

It's simple. Just get a mounting kit.
The hardest part is getting free the screws that hold the original deck in on the sides. I had to drill 2 of them out after even an impact screwdriver failed.
Other than that it's fairly simple. You'll also need a wiring harness kit which is about $6. Then you just match the wires from the kit to the new radio and plug it right into your factory wiring harness.

How do you like the 3? I had the first one and it was complete dogshit. I heard that they got better, but I had such bad experiences that I didn't care to try again.
The new CL I bought to replace my wrecked one came with a . It's okay, but I haven't really messed with it much.
As far as a backup camera is concerned, I'd prefer to have it in the OEM Navigation location or up in the rear view. Having it as low as the factory radio would make me not pay attention to the side mirrors and is asking for trouble.

I like the AppRadio 3, though I wish it had CarPlay like the 4, though I don't want the smaller 6.2" screen on the 4 and hope the 5 which will be announced next month will go back to the 7". I hate that Pioneer drops support for their products so quickly and moves on to the next one.
Pandora app is kinda messed. When connected directly, audio will randomly stop but it will continue playing. Going to Bluetooth instead will continue to play. This is an issue with Pandora only and it seems they don't care to fix it. It has been fixed in the past with new releases but then returned with other releases after. I've given up on them fixing it and just do Bluetooth audio (which is fine but you can't up vote or down vote when not directly connected and you don't get album art on the screen).
I don't use the backup camera much. It's fine if you're looking to park in a spot you don't belong (just remember that you'll likely get hit by the other guy when he pulls out if you park that tightly) but I would never rely on it for normal backing and always check my mirrors instead. I don't use it while driving and having it mounted higher wouldn't impact how I use it.

I got a 7" double din. Like these guys said just get a dash kit. (Metra) and whatever stereo you want and install. Aftermarket radio really increases the volume output too.

Just did mine last week. Ordered head unit from Crutchfield and it came with dash kit, wiring harness and adapter to make it play well with stock amp. Threw a 10inch sub in and it sounds great.

Also ordered from Crutchfield. All the hardware comes included at no extra cost (minus that adapter/in-between piece) also comes with instructions if you're like me and need them.

Just finished mine as well in my 2003 CLS.
Went with the JVC KW30BT.
Ordered from Crutchfield as well.
JVC KW30BT (HU)
ACU-K862 Dash Kit
Metra 70-1721 Receiver Wiring Harness
Scosche SLC4 Line Output Converter (do not need this)
Master Sheet
Parking Brake Override relay from Amazon (so you can watch videos in gears other than Park)
Basically you have to solder the JVC harness wires (about 15) to the Metra harness....insert and solder the Parking brake override relay...and solder/connect the remote turn on wire to the amp (at least I did and it worked).
The sound was way better than stock. Really straightforward.
I learned the front door tweeters (near the dash) are tapped off the front speakers in the door so u just have basically 2 front speakers(4 actual speakers) and two rears hooked up to the HU.
Very straightforward. I didn't add any other equipment. No need.
