SSR Comps. not as light as I thought!
I just recieved my SSR Comps. in 17" in the new silver color. My first impression of the rim is that is not as light as I thought especially compared to my GT1. Not only that but it doesn't look as impressive as the GT1. I really don't know if Im going to keep them especially for $379 a wheel. I could put $20 more a wheel and get the GT1's in 18"......WTF!!!!!!!!

Why pay good money to get pissed off and not get what you expected?

. I weighed them and they are 14lbs and the Gt1 are a little more than 17 lbs. Im telling u its hard tto tell the difference in weight between both.

1. You realize that just picking up a couple of items in different hands for "comparison" weighing is going to drive you crazy...

2. Yes, they are about 3 lbs lighter. It the 3lbs is on the rim, that would be wonderful. But, at what cost are you willing to gain a 3 x 4 x 3 lbs of equivalent static weight (36lbs)?
3. If you buy heavier tires than you are currently using, you might negate the gains from the lighter SSRs.
You sound like you are having a serious case of buyers remorse and there is always going to be a style difference between the two (no kidding). Why pay to be unhappy?
IMO, eat the shipping and send them back or at least sleep on it.
There really is only 3lbs difference between them. Heck, gets some 225/45-17 Toyo T1s that weight around 20lbs and you've cut 5+ lbs/tire off the stock MXM4's weight per tire...
http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_specsheet.cfm?id=2
See 225/45-17 T1S 94 load rating, XL equivalent, 20.9 lbs
MXM4 weighs in at around 25-26lbs...

arent the SSR comps known to have quality problems?.....They supposedly bent really easily due to potholes and such.
Since ur not happy with the color and weight..... i say, first and foremost, u had better do a little research and find out on their quality.

Now that Im looking at them in different angles they do look kind of cool. One thing for the guys that have these rims are we sure they don't rub. I measured the rim from edge to edge and they are 8 3/4 wide......I hope these suckers don't rub.

I did talk extensively with the regional sales rep and he made a rather large point about how they used CAE/CAD/CAM methods to design the SSR Comps to resist deflection and be very strong with regards to bending, breaking etc.
You will find RealTime racing and others using the wheels on competition vehicles and I've ran over a good many pot-holes in my crud infested streets without a problem.
Even the best-forged wheels will bend or break if you abuse them enough or find the right pothole or object to hit with enough force...
i found these websites which list "SSR COMPS" having problems. They're on different cars but i'm guessing they're the same rims just in different size for different make/model

For some reason ur SSR COMPS are different then THESE "ssr comps" mentioned by these owners then disregard me
**i barely did any search on these and i found atleast 2-3 sites mentioning problems so u could spend a little more time and many find out that its more widespread**

And some quotes with comments:
"I was behind a long line of traffic and didn't see it coming or see anyone ahead of me swerve. Nailed the pot hole this afternoon and thought "what the hell was that?!?!". I quickly checked all the wheels at my first stop, didn't find anything and figured "these wheels really ARE strong!"
At what point if you really nail a pothole are the wheels considered no good?
Then the other guy complains about the strength and the valve stems... Sorry, the valve stems don't come with the wheels...
Here is another link from the guy with the link to the problems:
"Some had experienced bent rims when hitting potholes and another person had complained about leaky valve stems. I'm happy to say I've not experienced any of these problems. My car is a daily commuter, and I've hit my share of potholes and I've also accidentally run into parking curbs on two occasions and all the wheels are still nice and true, and the finish is still like when I originally received them..."
This is another quote in response to a road warrior on a Bimmer forum (my feelings could be expressed in kind):
"Speaking from experience, I have a set of 17x8 SSR comps and a set of BBS RC 17x8. the SSRs are lighter and cleaner/easier to clean design. I have no issues with both these wheels so far. I use them in both my E36 M3 and my E30 M3 track car. I think most of you have to look @ driving style and road conditions on which wheels bend. If you are RACING on the SSRs and you go
agricultural, fender/bumping or curb hoping, then you will probably run a higher risk of bending the SSRs. I don't do much curb hoping and only a few agricultural trips so my SSRs have been fine. If you live in pot hole city, then I think any wheel you buy will risk benage :0)"
And so on...
If you smack 'em hard enough, they will bend...
If you are worried get some Volks or HREs -- they cost more, but might take on more punishment if your streets have that “post nuclear exchange look”…
I do live in a pretty fucked up city like NYC but I had absolutely no problems with my GT1. I do realize that they are light and no matter how forged they are the can still bend. I doubt the Volks or HRE are any stronger than SSR because when I visit my local wheel shop I am always seen bent and cracked AMG,OZ superleggars, Volks TE37 you name it I've seen it. Im not saying these wheels are weak its just that our roads really suck and a lot of the younger guys get the 18" and 19" with barely any tire. Look great but not in this city and thats why I went with 17" in a tuner wheel. I am proud to run on 17" and still have a lot of meat on my tires unlike the Civics and the 205/40 17" not pothole friendly.
For show I'll probably get the Roh Fury in black shadow in 19" I believe they are a little more that $200 a wheel.

I just had them mounted and balance at Costco with the Michelin A/S and man do they look fucking great. I don't know what I was thinking for anybody who is in the market for these rims get them in silver. They have a great effect while driving that make them look wicked and the lip is awesome. As far as the tires go definetly get the 235/45 cause it makes the car looks sooooo aggresive. Too bad the streets stilll have snow and my car looks dirty so I can't post some pics. As far as tuner wheels go these have got to be some of the better looking ones thanks EricL and H@mmerm@n for telling me to get them. Peace
By the way no rubs at all even with all the stock tires and wheels in the back. At first I thought they would rub cause lip to lip measured 8 3/4" wide but with tires didn't look to wide.
