ss problems

anyone have any problems with the ss choosing not to shift. i notice the problem when if i pull out, it shifts into second, and then i nail it and it downshifts to first. sometimes i must hit the shift twice for it to shift up to second, and always i must hit it at least twice to shift up to third. i asked acura about it, and they said they have not had any complaints

thanks in advance

There are several instances where SS will fail to upshift or downshift. The biggest two that I can think of are:

1.When upshifting will exceed redline, and
2.When you try to upshift/downshift as though you were Tony Stewart on the NASCAR track.

neither case seems to fit. if the car downshifts by itself from 2 to 1 after i nail it, it has never upshifted on the first try(at least not that i can recall). usually i am not even trying to redline it, just up to 4k or so. what do you think...

The SS will automatically upshift from 1st gear to 2nd gear.

yeah, i know it will downshift from 2 to 1 automatically, but when the car does that, those are the times that it will not shift from 2 to 3 when in sport shift mode. i have never had the problem when i manually shifted from 1 to 2 to 3, only when it did an auto downshift, like might happen when you are merging into traffic on a freeway, and nailed it to get up to speed

How can you upshift and exceed the redline?!!! Upshifting can only drop RPM, it simply cannot result in a higher RPM... Or am I missing something?

IT down shifts into first becase your going to slow. Its good that it down shifts,If you
think about. You get a better launch. I dont know what to tell u about the up shifting part. Maybe your not pushing the lever up far enough. not too hard though ! good luck

I use SS quite often and have no complaints so far. The only trouble I've had trying to shift would be when my dumbass allowed it to redline and kick in the fuel shutoff.

I have had problems with SS too...
When I'm in 3rd gear and try to shift it to 4th at around 2-3 rpm it, quite a few times, not always, though, simply doesn't shift...

You are right. Downshift...not upshift. You know what I mean.

My experience is different. The 2-3 upshift can take 2 or more seconds to occur after the shift lever is pushed forward. I thought I was missing the switch and I would get in a second and sometimes a third try before the tranny shifted. I verified the delay by pushing the shift lever only once and seeing if the tranny stayed in second. It never did, it always shifted after the delay. The longer the tranny is in second gear the shorter the delay seems to be.

There is a delay, which incidentally does allow you to toe-heel it. I've just got mine fixed (tea incident) and it works like brand new...oh, it is brand new now.

Same problem here. If you hold it close to redline, it MAY not shift. The only way out is to slowdown.

It won't shift because the rpms at too low. I mean, if you're going 30mph in 3rd gear and try to shift into 4th gear it ain't gonna happen because the car would likely stall.

There is nothing to worry about. First and Second are computer controlled. When you are driving slow in second and floor it, the computer will downshift to make full use of first gear. Once it hits its determined shift point (set by the amount of pressure on the accelerator) it will shift to second. You the driver are not in control of this. From then on you're in control.

The SS will also prevent you from stalling or over reving the engine. Try this one. Drive the car in SS and get up to 5th. Now when you go to stop leave it there and when you come to a complete stop , the SS will automatically put you in first so that you do not kill the engine. Next when you are in 3rd and doing 80+, the SS will not let you go into second.

These safety features are nice. the only gripe I do have is not being able to control first.

My 2-3 upshift is handicapped too. It takes a couple up hits to get into 3rd while I'm on it hard in VTEC.

i figured out the minimum speed to upshift, and maximum speed to downshift, save 5-4 and 4-3 since i've never tried to max those out. (God, you'd have to be going fast)

1-2 computer controlled
2-3 > 10 mph
3-4 > 20 mph
4-5 > 35 mph

5-4 never tried
4-3 never tried
3-2 < 60mph
2-1 computer controlled
