SS delay

Hm, I know this probably has been asked a million times, but I searched through all the forums and couldnt find anything.

Is there a way to minimize the SS delay when you shift? You know, such as letting of the gas, or shifting at certain RPMs, etc etc?

The delay you're experiencing is a characterstic of manually shifting any OEM automatic transmission. Unlike a manual trans where you are physically changing the gear, shifting the automatic is only diverting fluid pressure in the valve body so the gear can be changed.

The TCM (transmission control module) will shift the trans for optimum performance based on % of throttle applied.

Also I said this in another thread, years ago:

The time it takes you to shift the SS
1)Think about shifting
2)Move the lever
3)Gear shifts

compared with a manual
1)Think about shifting
2)Let off the accelerator
3)Press in the clutch
4)Move the lever
5)Release clutch
6)Apply accelerator

is about 1/2 second difference.

Unless you are racing, this shouldn't be an issue for the normal driver. I think you are only aware of the delay because you aren't doing anything else distracting. A manual shift delays, too.

A skilled driver doesn't granny shift a manual gearbox:

MANUAL TRANS
1. You see the tach rapidly approaching the time to shift.
2. Keep your foot planted on the gas pedal.
3. **very quickly** Depress the clutch pedal.
4. **very very quickly** Shift into the next gear.
5. Slide your foot sideways off the clutch pedal.

1/2 a second faster due to less parasitic power loss in the drivetrain

More like:

1)Think about shifting
2)Let off the accelerator/Press clutch
3)Move the lever
4)Release clutch/Apply accelerator

After a while, step 1 becomes so automatic, you're hardly aware of it, like blinking. And when you get good, 2-4 become almost one step. Its like an automatic transmission wired directly into your brain.
