Sport Shifting: De-accelerating

When driving in SS at 5 gear (or whatever) coming to a stop, do you guys DOWNSHIFT or just let the computer downshift for you? Which is the better way to do it? Will downshifting to a stop put stress on the tranny? WIth all this tranny failure, I'm really paranoid now..I have never use SS but now I use it to save my tranny. It's that pathetic!

I usually downshift myself, let the engine braking slow me down... then use the brakes when I need to stop. No point in using SS if you're not going to downshift too

It depends on my mood, I guess. Certainly, if I'm going to take a corner, I'm downshifting. Lately, I've been so damn tired I haven't even been using SS.

It's cheaper to fix brakes, as opposed to replaceing a transmission..........Also, gas mileage will be poor using your tranny to slow you down.

That's a big no-no! Don't ever use the tranny to slow you down.....not on the AUTO atleast.

If the book doesn't instruct how to use it, then use it anyway you want. The tranmission is there to change speeds, if it breaks and it's under the warranty, all the better. Enjoy.

If you are keeping up with the mileage threads, you know I drive a s**t load of miles, 73K and counting on a 21 month old 2nd Gen. I always drive in SS mode and always downshift to slow down. Hell, I'll drop it into 3rd from eighty (cause our 4th gear is so lame) to get a quick pass on some dweeb in the left lane. I know it don't mean S**t and I am just one car and maybe I'm just lucky, but I have no tranny problems.

YMMV

i try not to downshift in high rpms as it makes the car "jerky" when slowing down. but i find it messes w/ my gas mileage if I downshift a lot.

I usually drive in full auto, but going down steep hills or once in a while, I'll use the SS to downshift. I think it works great. No problems. I guess I'm lucky. I've had no tranny problems at all. My CL-S shifts smoothly every time.

If I'm in SS, I use it to accelerate and decelerate. YMMV
