Sport Shift

I'm thinking of trying to improve my gas mileage by using sport shift only for a full tank of gas. Does anybody know if this will hurt the transmission by using sport shift only for this length of time?

I tried doing this, keeping the rpms under 2k, but I had to wot a couple times when I went to Houston, so...that screwed it all up. Let us know how it goes.

No it will not hurt the tranny at all. I've done it a plenty and if you shift right you'll actually gain a few MPG on the highway....not so much noticable in stop and go traffic....like city driving. If you usually obtain 330 miles to a tank, watch that number go up to 350 up to 360. Not bad huh?

I probably use SS more than D5. Never had a problem.

It works really well for good gas mileage getting into 5 gear early around 40+ish if you can't hit 47 (i think thats the lowest speed it shifts into 5th in D5). Running at less than 1500 rpms at 40ish is way better than running 2,000 in 4th.

I've been driving @ 65 on the highway w/ cruise control on instead of doing 80-85 to see if I can get some better mileage but it's still to early to tell if it makes a big difference... Last tank looked better (saved about 2 gallons), but this tankfull doesn't look so go (to much time in vtec ?).

I normally drive between 65-75 on the highway, and living in Missouri there's a lot of steep hills near my house so I average around 320 miles to the tank. We'll see if it can't get near 350-370 with sport shift.

if I don't need the acceleration I'll drop it into 5th just over 35mph. been doing it since the car was new (now 102k on original tranny), no prob...

27-28 mpg commuting, 34-35mpg straight highway.

I don't see a problem using it. I tried it a couple times and it was good for about 1 extra mpg. To me it wasn't worth it. It was a pain in the ass in the city.

That's some good mileage. The best I got was 32 when I was modded, but that was doing 80-85.

Update on the tank. I ended up getting up to 345 on the tank, the best so far since I've had the car. (I've had it for a little over 3 months) I've tried it on the new tank a little, but it's just so hard to stay out of vtec. Gotta love a little power. Plus, with the drop in gas prices it''s fun to open it up every now and then. Thanks for the advice on the tranny. Just didn't want to break our fragile piece of glass. Thanks again Acura.

and like you said, i would use this method more often, but almost every time i get behind the wheel, vtech beckons me lol

the prices are forever up there around these parts.

and i always use SS and go WOT at least once a day. just to get out of my system. plus, she wants me to punch it when the RPMs are lingering in the high 4,000s.
