Spoiler Debate

Hey, I have a spoiler on my CLS...the only thing it does is make the back look a bit better. Of course it's subjective and everyone has their opinion about it.

One thing I know for sure it ain't meant for performance enhancement. What is a spoiler doing on a FWD car anyway? Downforce (if any) on the wheels that have no power?

It's more aesthetic than performance.

Yep, it's aesthetics. However, I really think the car looks much nicer with the spoiler too. I can't stand the way it looks with that big, round LHS-looking butt when it doesn't have the spoiler. From every angle it has subtle, yet sharp lines except the back, where they decided to make it look like a big, pillowy cloud like a Chrysler. YUCK! The Spoiler adds a little bit of the edginess back to the lines from the rear.

I disagree... Too many cars today have spoilers that look stupid and don't need them. I hate this bandwagon society we're becomming. "Let's be different like everyone else."

Whether it's a need or not was not the basis of my decision for the spoiler. I would have been just as happy with a different rear end with some of the lines like the front and the side. If THAT was an option, it most certainly would have been the one I chose. But it wasn't, and I don't want to throw one of those gigantic double-decker spoilers from someone like Wings West on it so, the factory spoiler works for me. If I wanted "different", I wouldn't have purchsed a mass-market vehicle like an Acura CL. I would have bought some older classic and restored it where you won't see 25 of them in your city in the course of a month.

I'm sure your post wasn't an "attack" on me but it most certainly DOES seem to stereptype the average Joe who has a spoiler on his car if it isn't a track car. My last 2 cars (98 Accord EX-V6 coupe, 99 Prelude base) DIDN'T have the factory spoiler because I thought the lines were crisp without them. Anyhow, like he said, it's all personal preference.

I went back and forth with the no spoiler- spoiler look. It helped to see it both ways(pictures on this board).I like the way the car looks both ways. The $591.70 installed was also a factor(halfway to the headers).
Last Saturday, the spoiler went on. Then the springs on Monday.I ordered the headers and the drop in filter yesterday.
The madness has begun!!!!

Personally, I don't like the looks of the spoiler, I like the clean look of the car without it.

Well I've liked some CL's without, and I like mine with. But, I disagree with it's being only ornamental. At speed, you want the back end (powered or not) stable as you can get it, so anything that helps is a go.

The car looks sooooo much better with the spoiler. I think the Type S's that don't have it look just awful!

When I first saw The CL-S it was without the spoiler. The car had a unique look. But once I saw one with a spoiler, a CL-S without one looked kind of bare. I agree that the spoiler does little more then add a sportier look to the rear end of the vehicle.

The question I have is what is with these people who are putting on multi level spoilers that are bigger then most bookcases I have in my house. Is it me, or do they look ridiculous. Hell one small car I saw had a spoiler that must have weighed about 50% of the weight of the car itself. Are these guys understand impression that the bigger the spoiler is, the faster their cars will go, or are they just compensating for a small wiener.

This is the only type of spoiler that I would consider. If only someone would make it.

There you go... that spoiler on the blue one would be good. Maybe just a bit smaller. I don't like being gauty and tacky. Like the other guy said, it looks clean. Ando 300 bucks is too much for a peice of plastic.

i think, unless you have a ferrari, diablo, Vector, or one of those super cars, spoilers don't do anything... especially on front wheel drive, it only adds more weight! rather spend the money on the real substance to improve performance.

besides, spoilers destroy the look of our type-s, since type-s never claim to be a sports car, but a performance luxury car.

When I bougt my car they had 2 white ones. One with a spoiler and one without.I simply thought the spoiler added to the overall look of the car. The white especially doesn't show the edges and lines as well as black for instance. So, the spoiler helps my car's looks in my opinion. Go to the acura page under CL. Go "to build your own". You can see each color with or without and make your own mind up.

I originally bought my CL-S with no spoiler, but after I got mine installed a few months afterwards, I love the way it looks and my friends all love the look of it with the spoiler.

No question, spoiler makes the car. I hate the way it loks without it although acura did a nice job of fixing the rear of the old cl, but man, it looks so much better with it on. Check out the rear in my sig.

I've always hated spoilers on cars, but I loved how the factory spoiler on the CL looked like, so I got it! My friends were very suprised....

I like the Kavextrax spoiler. That would be nice.
I didn't like the offered one. It was half luxo and half ricey. Almost like a mini-van spoiler, hey its almost like the one on the oddey

I bought my Intrepid without a spoiler and then after two years I put one on for a change. In that case I liked the way it looked with and without. It's pretty much the same for the CL-S. I like the way it looks with and without so for now I don't have it. Maybe at some point I'll want a change and get it installed.

yah for more or less.the spoiler has some aerodynamic feature..so ..it is going to push the rear end parts down while cruise at about 90 miles on...but going to slow down your top speed...and u will feel drag while your speed is high..but good for vistual effect though

Well, I always thought Honda is the only company that dosen't make a car as a "whole".
so you'll have to buy those wings to make the car look good. Example, Integra, Prelude, CL, Accord, etc.

as the way of doing business, I personally don't like Honda's policy of doing this.

at least to make your car look "okay" without the wings.

I have my car sans spoiler, and I do prefer the clean look. As far as having support at 120+ mph, that's not really a concern for me as I'm not terribly interested in how this car does once I hit 4th gear, as it's dog slow then ANYway. Other than that, to each his own

So your choice is lose a little top end speed or have the rear get jiggy. Down force is a beautiful thing I'll lose the fraction of a mph top end.

i agree w no spoiler except maybe sema but even then dont know? the car looks clean and elegant w/o like a bmw or mercedes or lexus gs and i like the fact that that adds to the sleeper effect on this car...all that said i am in search of the perfect OEM looking body kit does any one have pics of this guy that supposedly put accord side skirts on his cl-S???

Car and Driver did a test a while back on top speed/factory spoilers. I remember specifically that the Cobra Mustang gained some top speed with the spoiler removed. So you probably would lose a couple of MPH, no big deal, right? After all, how many times do you drive over 140 MPH?

But as far as having the rear end get "jiggy"? --- Downforce on the rear will be offset with lift on the front. Not a good thing in a front wheel drive car like our CL-S. Personally, I think a rear mounted spoiler on a front wheel drive car is just silly.
