spark plugs

Getting to 80K miles on my 2001, I am thinking of changing the plugs. car runs fine, but given the age and a lot of city driving, I am thinking its a good time to change. Found stock plus on amazon, should be $75 shipped (vs $120+ tax from a dealer).

You raise a good point. I was going off the part number in the Amazon link. According to NGK, the Type S uses the Iridiums (IZFR6K-11). Although the TL-S lists three different types of plugs while the CL-S list only the Iridiums, even though they are the same motor.

The plugs in the OP are the Double Platinums.

NGK Lazer Iridiums were used in 03 CL-S. For 01-02 CL-S, they used NGK Lazer Platniums. Both will last you another 105k.

I upgraded from my old stock 01 Lazer Platniums to the Lazer Iridiums when I changed my plugs out. I suggest the same to anyone else.

This is the part number for 2001 CLS, PZFR6E-11, exactly whats on Amazon. What is the confusion here? If you go to acuraoemparts.com, they also show this part number. I believe its in our manual also.

What is the difference between F and E?

According to amazon F is Sizing and Specifications
Item Weight: 1.92 Ounces
Height: 20 millimeters
Length: 8.4 centimeters
Width: 25 millimeters

E is Sizing and Specifications
Item Weight: 2.08 Ounces
Height: 20 millimeters
Length: 8.1 centimeters
Width: 25 millimeters

so the length and weight is different. I say just get the iridiums I changed mine to those about 1k miles ago.

FYI . . I've used this site to find out various details for all my cars. I'm actually going to use the NGK IX Iridium 6441 ZFR6FIX-11 based on consistent dyno results, but don't necessarily apply to our engines, but what the hey.

So which ones are OEMs?
I am happy with my old plugs, so want to replace with the same thing.

Looks like manual is wrong, PZFR6F-11 seems to be incorrect. Even NKG website says that PZFR6E-11 should be used for 2001 CLS. Also acuraoemparts.com lists PZFR6E-11
Can someone confirm that PZFR6E-11 is the official OEM replacement part?

I was just at the NGKsparkplugs.com official site and it says the part number is: ZFR5FIX-11

A NGK.com distributor website lists: IZFR6K-11

Advance Auto Parts lists: ZFR5FIX-11

Any thoughts on why they are different?

I'm liking the ZFR5FIX-11 plugs because they are $6.99 at Advance. They are gapped the same.

The ones that have 5F in their name are definitely incorrect, Type S needs 6. 5s are for premium model.

according to acura, all the 01-03 CLS use lazer platnium.

I will be contacting NGK to find out the differences in these part numbers for the lazer iridiums. This information is good for people who plan to change their plugs again near 210k. For the plugs to last that long, you have to use at least lazer platnium if not lazer iridium.

and while NGK says the 03 plugs are better than the plugs used in 01-02, "The improvement on the ground electrode would not be very noticeable if at all. I’m sure the design was made for a reduction in emissions or fuel economy but we are talking a very small percent improvement. They are virtually identical."

kinda sounds like when acura switched from 5W-30/10W-30 to 5W-20 in the J32A2
.

I thought the CL-Ps have the Platinum plugs and the CL-Ss have Iridium? The part numbers I listed above were for Iridium for the 2003 CLS but if you search the 2001 CLS the 6 appears in the part number in lieu of the 5... I emailed NGK directly to ask them about this. I will post their response when/if I hear back from them.

Those the last quote above was sent from an email from NGK.

so basically if you have a 01/02 CL-S your supposed to use PZFR6E-11. but your able to upgrade to iridium (IZFR6F11)

If you have a 03 CL, original plugs are IZFR6K11.

I'm not sure that everyone read all the data contained within the SparkPlugs.com site, but the term "performance" can mean more than one thing.

For example:
1) performance in terms longer plug life
2) performance in terms of longer plug life and better spark/power production
3) performance purely from a spark/power production (typically these are non-resistor plugs for maximum power gains used for track applications)

Metals used in plugs
http://www.sparkplugs.com/glossaryImage.asp?imgID=2

Iridium vs Standard Plugs
http://www.sparkplugs.com/glossaryImage.asp?imgID=1

NGK Dyno Results
http://www.sparkplugs.com/sparkplug4...Results&mfid=0

Dyno comparison of higher end plugs
http://www.sparkplugs.com/sparkplug4...Results&mfid=0

Now one needs to understand what the level/balance of performance are you wanting and willing to pay for? Note, the plug that best fits your needs isn't necessarily the most expensive. In other words, you don't need to spend more than $45 - ($7.00 a plug) - to get a plug that delivers both longlife and more power.

IMHO, all this is marketing. stock plugs are perfectly find for average day to day driving, I am not going to experiment based on marketing claims ...

That's why I stated standard plugs are fine for the less demanding drivers. The more demanding drivers . . ie into performance modding or just wanting a better plug, they'll need a plug that meets that demand. That's why there are dynos included (not marketing claims) to back up the benefits . . . and yes, Iridium, Platinum, etc are all marketing traps for most drivers, but if folks take the time to read and understand the data (science) so they can separate marketing from facts. Those facts are that Iridium based plugs will last longer than Platinum, and Platinum longer than traditional plugs. It is also fact that there are advantages to various designs . . again, I didn't pull stuff off of some manufacturers site, but included links that provide research data to better inform you. Sorry I bothered you by trying to help you find a better plugs and save money on top of it.

ive switched to the iridium NGKs in my 99 tl and now in my 03 TL-S and with both there was noticeable difference. granted, anytime an old pluhg gets replaced there will be a diff. but i was also basing it on reports by other tl owners

oh, and the fact they are only $7 at advanced auto, making it cheaper then the stock ones. and better lasting. actually, with a little coupon work, i got mine for $5 and some change. so i aint complaining

but you do what you like man

LOL, I am sure he did. There is no way lazer iridium costs 7 bucks. Its funny when people say "I feel a difference", it reminds me when people say how they "feel" that their car runs better on synthetic oil.

I felt a difference too but its from the actual new plugs not what material they are made of (platnium vs. iridium). If I replaced my old plazer platniums with traditional copper plugs, I would notice an improvement too.

Question

I just had my plugs changed on my 2001 CL-S last week with NGK Laser Platinum PZFR6F11 spark plugs. Went with the owners manual part #. Are these ok cause I see different part numbers?

Question

I called Acura and they say the correct spark plug is PZFR6E-11. I just installed the PZFR6F-11 plugs last week cause that was the NGK # in the manual. Will I be fine with the 6F-11?

ACURA and NGK state PZFR6E-11
Owners Manual states PSFR6F-11

I'm about to install my second replacement set of spark plugs.

Found for my 2003 Type S engine, NGK part numbers (same 6 heat range for both):

Automatic trans
PZFR6E-11 (laser platinum)

Manual trans
IZFR6K-11 (laser iridium)

The above from my manual, calling my Acura dealer and confirming with the Acura parts web-site on-line.
