Is something wrong w/ my CL???

Hello all,

It's been a long time since i've posted something up here. Anyway i have a 2001 CL Type S w/ 54k miles on it. Anyway i'm starting to notice that there is a slight hesitation in switching gears when going from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. It idles a lil more and higher than what it should when doing this. It's not a long hesitation but i can tell that it should be changing quicker than what it is. If someone could let me know what this could possibly mean i'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Your tranny may be on the way out. Do a search for "transmission" and you'll see what I mean.

Yea i honestly figured that's what it was. Because i had a 98 Honda Prelude and it did the same thing, however, it was worse... it would idle really high and take like 3-4 secs. to switch. So i had a feeling that's what it was. But my question is should it be going out this soon??? That doesn't seem right! I'm thinking it's still under warranty also. So i guess that'll determine whether or not it'll be wise to keep it or to just get something else... depending on if it's covered under the warranty!

Didn't the '01 have the tranny recall? Does someone still have the list with the VIN's of the recalled tranny's? If so you may be lucky and have yours covered until 100K.

Well there you go, your problem is solved. Take your car to your dealership and have the tranny replaced.

Mine was doing that a month ago. But mine was shifting irratically, like at different points. Also would take too long to get into 3rd.. Then took it in, and they replaced it. Been great ever since.

Update/Follow-Up

Hey guys/gals,

So i posted a thread a couple days ago saying how my 01 CL-S has been idling high when shifting from 2nd - 3rd gear. I figured that it was the transmission and you guys confirmed it for me when i asked you about it the other day.

So i went in this morning b/c i orginally had to get my oil change (54K miles) and i told him to ask them to take a look at the transmission also and i explained what was going on. So when everything was done, the guy said that it's definitely my transmission and he didn't recommend that i drive it anymore. So they gave me a loaner (05 TSX) I soooo wanted that TL. I even asked about getting one and they had to give me what was available. They didn't have any TLs but the guy said he would call me if one came in within the next day or so since it'll take a good 3-5 days to fix the tranny. TSX is nice but since i'm looking at getting the TL when my CL is paid for next year, i really wanted to test it out and drive it. So hopefully one will become available. What do you guys think?

So what makes the transmission go out so quick in this car? Does it have to do with the Sports Shifter? I mean going at this rate, that means i'll have to get it replaced again around the 100k mark which means it prolly won't be under warranty still, which is where people with automatic CLs get rid of them before the 100k mile hump.

Let me know. Thanks everyone!

i'm having the same slight jump, but only in the morning. Maybe the tranny just needs to warm up on mine. But after reading up on these I get a little more cautious/aware of what's going on during the shifts. If she acts up some more I'm taking her into the dealer.

Hey ac2001 what dealer did you take yours too? Hendrick Acura in Charlotte? I rarely see any TL loaners there but a free TSX to burn for a couple of days wouldn't be that bad either!

cltphantom,

I take mine to Leith Acura in Cary at the Auto Park Mall there. Oh don't get me wrong, the 05 TSX is decent as well. However, it's no comparison to the TL. So as i said hopefully something will come available. Even if i'm able to drive it for a full day, i'll be satisfied.

I believe the reason your transmission went out was because of a manufacturer's defect. I have only heard of a few of the cars getting their trannys replaced more than once. My sister has an '01 CL-S and we got the tranny replaced a year and a half ago or so and we haven't experienced any trouble with it since then. But i'm pretty sure you shouldn't worry too much about it happening again near 100k.

I just became a member of this non-exclusive club. I started noticing slippage primarily between 2nd & 3rd gears in my 2001 CL Type S within the last week. I had taken it in within the last year for the recall at which time the dealer installed the oil jet device so I knew about the potential transmission problems.

I jumped out on the web and found all of these reports of what happens and knew I was in for a tranny replacement. I had a 90k mile service already schedule so when I took it in for that yesterday I told them about the transmission. They called me not 15 minutes later at work to tell me that indeed I needed the new tranny.

Thank goodness it decided to die at ~91k miles...still within the 100k mile extended warranty period. The dealer clearly has dealt with this before because they were totally organized in getting things in shape for me...including the loaner TSX.

I just hope the car feels the same with the new transmission...and that the new transmission holds up for several years. I only have 5 payments left on the CL!

ah yes the replacement tranny.. If you are still on the original you will get a replacement ECU as well which will not allow you to see the higher RPM ranges when down shifting for extra acceleration. The replacement tranny with also have an oil jet in it..

Good luck...

Hey mickey3c,

What did you mean by what you said? Are you saying with the new tranny, we're not gonna have the same "pickup and go" when driving the CL? Could you please explain this for me, since i'm getting a new one installed as we speak and they too provided me with a loaner TSX. They said it would take approx. 3-5 days. Is this accurate?

The basic answer to your question is the fact that Honda gave the car too much power without a beefy enough transmission to handle it.

No It has nothing to do with the sequential sportshift, the Accords have the same problem and they are non SS equipped.
The main component failing in the tranny is the Clutch pack between gear's 2-3.
You can find some great LONG detailed information by one of our greatly detailed members EricL, he has done much writing and explaining of this, so check it out, kind of interesting to know about.
