So.... I ordered the Kumho's....

... and the TireRack calls me to advise against it!??!? Because I didn't order the stock size and because the load rating is different than the OEM tires. I ordered 225/45/17 like many others on here have in various diff tires. Did anyone else get any crap from the TireRack about doing this? I can understand the load rating thing. But the size difference is pretty negligible according to all the tire calculators on the 'net.

heh heh... it's funny, he was saying the OEM tires are "extra load" tires or something. Our poor car is such a fatass!

They were $100/each so the total was $434.20 including shipping (no tax!!)
I have Comptech springs and I thought I remembered others saying they've had problems with 235s rubbing. But that could have been with 18s. At any rate, the speedo will only be off by 1.9% and I think it's on the LOW side, so if I think I'm going 75mph, I'm actually going a mph or two BELOW that which is always a good thing for me and my leadfoot.

the number stamped on the sidewall of the tire is the nominal tire size. actual size can vary significantly from manufacturer to manufacturer, even among the same (nominally) sized tires.

tire manufacturers provide tire dealers with the actual tire measurement info including the rolling diameter, tread width, sidewall width, rim width and rim type requirements for their particular model and size.

maybe this particular tire deviates from the stock sizes too much in this regard?

Nice purchase man.
As for tirerack giving you crap, they have to I think, sort of a liability thing incase something happens they are clear of anything. But i'll see them at the track whenever we can get out there. I'm getting an AEM CAI sometime soon because I want to hear it for when it gets cooler out here. Anthony.

I don't know how you guys keep tires so long, The longest I ever kept a set was 12,000 miles.

You are such a nut! My stockers have 26k on them and I can EASILY get 5-10k more out of them. I just don't want to drive to Vegas in a few weeks on worn out tires. There are some fun mountain roads along the way!

When you heading to Vegas, I'm going to meet my parents up there last week of October, trying to make it there in record time. I can't wait for the drive up I'm bringing my Digital Camera and bought a 64MB Card so I can take a lot of pics.

I'm going in early November... I think around the 8-11th. If you're planning on making record time, you might want to set aside the money for AT LEAST 3 speeding tickets. Don't even THINK about speeding anywhere near Wickenburg or you're history. Same goes with the drive from Kingman north on 93 to Hoover Dam. The only safe parts are the mountainous areas about 30 miles outside of Wickenburg all the way up to I-40. The traffic is kind of a bitch, but there's plenty of passing lanes and the scenery is excellent.

Oh man that sucks, well thanks for telling me for sure hahahah. I'm just going to fly then because my parents will have a rental car. But if you think the drive is worth it and it pretty then i'll do it. But if there is really nothing from Sedonda on up then there is no point cause I have taken that drive before. And will again. Thanks

I got my second bubble today with the Kumho's! I'm not sure if I blame the tire or if I blame the harsh Chicago roads.... Anyways, the good thing is that I'm getting a new tire for free since I got the tire warranty the first time this happened to my tire. I suggest you sign up for that tire warranty! It's worth it! I didnt think so until today

You don't go by Sedona on the way to Vegas. The best way is to take I-17 to Hwy 74 which is just barely outside of Phx. That road goes west to Hwy 60 (Grand Ave) where you turn right and head up to Wickenburg. In Wickenburg you'll make a right on Hwy 93. The first 15 miles outside of Wickenburg is flat, straight and boring. Resist the temptation to go 140mph because that's where the speed traps are. Then, it starts to get interesting and curvy and mountainous. The whole length of Hwy 93 is fun all the way to I-40. The scenery is great along there too. I-40 to Kingman is boring and you get back onto Hwy 93 at Kingman. That is another stretch of road that's boring. If your car is in proper alignment I swear you can go 50 miles without touching the steering wheel - the road is that straight!! Watch the cops on that stretch too - I got my last ticket there over Memorial Day weekend. But then 15 miles outside of Hoover Dam it gets hilly and there are awesome curves descending down onto the Dam that will make you wanna give your left nut to be in an M3!! Unfortunately traffic around the Dam is a bitch. But the scenery is cool there as it is ascending back up the mountains towards Vegas. The view of Lake Mead is awesome. But be careful around Boulder City as it's a third speed trap. The best part of all... driving into Vegas over Railroad Pass and seeing the entire city lit up at night. That alone is worth the 5 hour drive, IMHO. But then... I like road trips...

1. TireRack changes their story every other day (or they have a random story generator – not sure)….

2. The stock tires are XL rated (for extra load handling).

The XL means a tire will support a given load at a pressure LOWER than the MAX pressure. In the case of the stock tires, the 93V rating is supported at 35 PSI and the MAX is around 40 PSI.

If you stay out of the dessert at high speeds with a load of cement, you will probably be fine. OTOH -- if you ever blow a tire and screw the car up, don't go to Acura expecting them to be "helpful" in the warranty department...

My opinions expressed here…

GoldTypeS and pgatour1:

Here's a route from Phx to Vegas that will really allow you to cruise in the CL's sweet-spot: take I-10 all the way to Quartzite, head north on 95 to Parker, head west on 62 for 20 miles then back on to 95 north for 50 miles. You'll hit I-40; take it west 10 miles then back on to 95 north for 80 miles to Henderson then in to Vegas.

Advantages to this route: there's a small fraction of the traffic you'd normally encounter going up through Wickenburg, it's all flat roads and you bypass the traffic mess at Hoover Dam. Disadvantages: you don't drive through the mountains or across Hoover Dam (you'll miss that scenery) and it's 30 miles longer. I've taken both routes and can pretty much guarantee you'll save quite a bit of time taking this way and you won't have to worry about speed traps.

Oh yeah {staying on topic}, can't wait to see the new Kumhos!
