Snow traction cables for CL Type S? Any experience?

I have a 2003 CL Type-S and previously owned a 2001 of same model. The manual says on the standard CL model that a properly fitted SAE class "S" rated cable traction devices are OK to mount on the stock tires and rims. But on the opposite page, it says the Type-S should not have any such traction devices mounted.

When I had my 2001 Type-S, the dealer sold me some SHUR Grip cables made by SCC (Security Chain Co.), P/N SZ 331 to fit my stock tires (P215/50R17 93V Michelin MXM4) and rims (17 x 7.0-inch) - in Sept. 2000. I never had the chance to mount them. But will attempt to do so in my driveway this weekend to see if there is a clearance problem with the shocks.

Has anyone driven the CL Type-S with these cables or a similar type in the snow successfully without any problems?

According to the CHP, even with snow tires mounted, some road conditions will still require chains or cables mounted.

If there is a clearance problem, I'm considering getting some inexpensive rims and tires that will be a little narrower and smaller in diameter and mount the cables on them. When chains are required, I could change the front tires out for the set with the cables already installed. Any thoughts?

thanks,
-g

Sorry about that. However, I've already deleted the 2 dups. There was a weird browser/network glitch that ended up posting dups. However, I only did one post with 2 dups. There were four posts by "6speedS" that were dups. Maybe you confused the two of us.

Anyone ever use Spikes-Spiders on a CL Type-S for driving in the snow?

On 215/50-17 tires?
On 225/50-17 tires?

Why do you change the thread to a thread that you already started. I did not sleep well last night and I find this very confusing..

Maybe if you got more sleep you wouldn't get so confused.

The first thread had to do with cable traction devices. The second thread had to do with spikes-spiders. The original thread had the spikes-spiders buried. Still confuse?

I found these. They appear to be cheaper than spiders.

2.) You shouldn't use a tire that's a different hight. A narrow tire is all you need. However, if your on the stock size, that is fine too. There is no need to go any narrower.

1.) Where on earth do you live that you need such things as chains/cables?

San Francisco

Anyone who lives in The San Francisco Bay Area or Sacramento has to use chains to get to Lake Tahoe to ski when it is snowing. The CHP blocks the roads and checks for 4 wheel drives or chains, probalby because the elevation goes to 7000 feet and lots of turns etc..

see this....

Well if you want to go Lake Tahoe when it is snowing, to ski, then you would be REQUIRED to have traction devices (chains)...It isn't a choice. It is a mandatory requirement by the CHP.

http://www.scc-chain.com/Pages%20Tra...you%20buy.html

I found this from the traction device manufacturer's website..

Limited clearance vehicles

This is becomming more of an issue every year. Some owner's manuals state that certain tire sizes do not provide enough clearance to accommodate winter traction products. Frequently, many car manufacturers make these statements just because a vehicle has less clearance available than Class "S" requires. The fact is, that many of these vehicles can use one of Security Chain Co.'s winter traction products.

The owner's manual for the vehicles listed in each of the following links indicate that tire chains or traction products should not be used (with the tires listed) or have some type of clearance restriction. We have found however, that the SCC products listed with each vehicle should perform satisfactorily if they are installed per SCC's instructions and the recommended maximum operating speed of 30mph is not exceeded

Two year old thread guys. NSX is in Northern California. Probably the closest point of reference for you chriskh is San Francisco. gcook is right about the CHP. Since people in CA generally drive like crap in the snow, they are extra careful about having people properly equipped - almost to the extreme.

LOL! I actually can't believe I didn't realize this thread was that old!

I do know about having to be "chain equipped" though. CSP does that here too. And yes, people drive like crap in the snow here too. Go figure, it only snows here every freakin' winter! You'd think they'd know how to do it by now.

Oh, and let it be known that I was never disputing gcook. I simply wanted to know where NSX was located. CSP does the same thing here when mountain conditions are bad. I too would need chains or cables if I did a lot of winter mountain driving. I usually stay away when the conditions are bad.

WOW, I didn't realize that someone breathed some life back into this thread.

Like Allout mentioned, I'm located in Nor CA, Bay Area. I gave up long ago with putting any type of traction device on my CLS; especially since I'm now running with 235/40/18 tires. And forget about my X, I only drive it in good weather.
