Since my CLS's clock backlight is dead :D

I spent the evening disassembling my BEL 985. I have unsoldered the display IC and soldered on an extension harness in addition to the 3 controls&buttons. Powered it up with the ~4 foot extension and drove down the street past the police station .. low and behold everything is still 100% Effective ( theres a stationary X band gun there and usually a po-po down the road ... Detector fired on each about 6 blocks ahead of them as it always does. Went back home and started to mold the "dog house" for the guts (radar horn, power supply, etc).

Made the doghouse by using the factory shell but casting over it with epoxy clay and molded it to sit butted-flush to the windshield but atop the dash. Tomorrow Ill be doing the final sand and paint matching to the factory interior tan-brown. Looks kinda booty still but with "vision" it is going to look hot I think. The doghouse is just big enough to fit the internals and is a "contoured mound". The Display I test fitted and fits PERFECTLY in place of the clock LCD .. so agenda for tomorrow will be running the wireing harness/extension & hardwired power down and out of site... removing the clock completely and replacing it with the BE 950 display.....

Im so amazed everything works I took one more drive with everything taped down to see if it still worked correctly and low and behold yup !!!

I'll post as soon as I can .. prolly tomorrow around this time or thurs. after work

Post up, I wanna see how that looks! I noticed that over at Audiworld there are all these crazy ways of installing a V-1 that people come up with....and they are actually fabricated and then mass produced. Why doesn't anyone over here take all of this stuff seriously and make it happen!!! I wish we were as enthusiastic about everything as the Audi people! We would have some crazy things! Check these out!

Yea there definitely has to be a nice place where the V1 can be nicely "mounted" to the car.

i've been thinking of a place for a long time...the most creative place i can think of which is kinda cool is above the guage cluster having a spring-mounted pop-down compartment for the concealed display where the wiring is snaked behind the guages and comes out underneath the fuse box...it follows the same general theory of the VTEC-controller in the sunglass holder

I wouldn't remove the casing from the V1. Apparently it provides interference shielding and would effect performance greatly if removed. I think some guy from a BMW forum mounted his where our map lights are in his car. That looked pretty good. Again I don't know how much of a performance hit he took.

Shouldnt take any performance hit... the actual radar detector portion of most is in a "horn" that is made of metal the plastic casing has hardly any shielding whatsoever....

The V1's whole casing and body is made of magnesium, which is what shields it from the radar detector-detectors that the cops sometimes have now....

Uh, never mind then, apparently there's a new detector-detector out written about by EricL that is able to detect even the V1 and the Escort 8500, and it's already being used in Canada

So be safe out there!

fyi: the escort 8500 runs on the same wireless frequency as the gas station pumps connected into the little store inside. One reason why the 8500 is totally immune to VG-2. where as the v-1 is built in a magnesium (SP?) casing to prevent VG-2. Personally I know 1 guy who has been caught in VA w/ a V1.
