Should I trade in for the 6 speed?

I did a search and there are 4 used 6 speeds at dealers in my area.

They range in price from $23,9xx to $26,9xx. And mileage that ranges from 11k to 31k.

I still owe $19k on my '02 CL-S.

I'm assuming I could get $15k on a trade in. Leaving me $4k upside down.

My original loan was for about $25k @ 6% and I am paying $432/month over 60 months.

I am a year into my loan.

Do you all think it is worth it?

I'd sell my headers and icebox. That's about $700 too right there.

It doesn't seem like my payments would change all that much. I'm sure I could get the best of the 4 for about $24k.

Any thoughts?

Only you can decide, it's your money and enjoyment. You really need to sell it yourself to ease the pain. I was about to trade in my 6 speed to get another one. But at the last minute I luckily found a happy buyer and saved $4k. why not just try to sell it on your own, it may take a while, but you will save thousands. Then shop and buy a 6 speed.
Trading in is not worth it. What does it hurt to market it yourself for a while, if money is the issue you should consider it.
I rented a car for a week til I got my new 6 speed.
IF you do trade in, find a dealer that will broker the deal on the car you buy, you'll save $1000 on taxes too.
good luck.

I traded. Had to shell out $6K for a new one. So $4K or a little less isn't that bad.

You have been paying 432/month for the loan.

I'm guessing you put about 3k down a year ago (new car)? If you sell now, you would of paid 682/month to drive the CL (downpayment + loan payments). Not including the negative equity.

With the 4k negative equity, you'll be around 28-29k on the road??

I'd say no, or at least sell privately.

For 28k and all the trouble, I'd go buy a new EVO.

No Acura dealer is going to give you a decent trade if they have 2 cars just like yours on the lot.

I am completely upside down on a loan, sometimes I kick myself for it, and when I get in the CL and drive I don't. It is really a matter of your financial goals and things unforseen in the next 4-5yrs. If you want to buy a house or a newer car in a few years it will make it a little more difficult.

Try to sell privately, put the amount of the additional payment away so you don't use it and see if you can handle it fine, then use that for a downpayment if you don't already have the money.

I only bought my CLS 'cause it came with the 6spd, so I'm all about teh manual tranny BUT...

I agree with Scrib and Bluto.

It isn't a good idea financially, and you'd be getting into another CLS with a shitty resale where you'd lose equity faster then another newer car. You know the trade in on your auto isn't great, so why would you want to get into another car where the tradein/resale won't be good.

If I was buying today. I wouldn't be buying a CLS 6spd. I'd be looking at used Bmw 330s and new G35s, but that's me.

If the CLS hadn't been discontinued, I might be singing a different tune, but since the resale value has hit the crapper on the CL, I'd suggest you look at other cars with a standard tranny.

Shawn S made the switch at the right time, and probably got a decent trade on red blinger

I wouldn't do it if I were you. Its just going to prolong your car payments in the long run. In another year when the 6 speed's value drops like a ROCK, you'll be happy you kept your slush box.

Save for something better than another CL dude. :o

AND that's the asking price at a dealer.

I was a defender of the "6spd value will hold" like the old legend 6spd, but I'm not too sure about that. I think we'll see values continue to slide quickly into the teens in the next year or two.

I've been debating on weither or not to bail out now and sell my 6spd privately.

Pussy. My commute sucks too (45 minutes for 20 miles sometimes) but after awhile driving a 6spd becomes second nature. I don't really think about it anymore.

well by HOLD i mean better than the AUTO. Supply/deman. People can just go elsewhere for an AUTO. 6speeds are a premium.

IMO, no one should be talking about cars and value/investment related topics in the same sentence. No car that we'd be in the market for here is going to hold it's value... don't kid yourself. And a 6sp doesnt' command THAT much of a premium right now... let alone in 3+ years. Don't make this particular decision based on what you think the car will or will not be worth in 3-5 yrs. You're going to take a bath either way - that's just the way you have to look at car purchases realistically... especially when a trade-in is involved. IMO, definitely do these things while you are young and can afford to have some fun with your disposable income (which Steve can do). I guess the question comes down to personal utility: will the 6spd make you that much more happy than the 5AT? And is the total difference in $$ worth it? I struggle with the 6sp/5AT decision every day I step on the gas... but right now the performance gains from the manual tranny aren't enough to overcome the $$ and the convenience factor (for me) of an automatic. Also, for the extra money being spent... couldn't you drop a S/C in the 5AT? We know it would be covered it you had any problems

especially since he smoked my 6spd all day at the track with just an intake (which i finally got put in so i am ready for a rematch), if you really want a six speed go for it, they are a blast, but i would only do it to get away from tranny costs at this point, i wouldn't go upside down just for the manual

I did……
I got 24,000 for my 2-year old Slush-Box 2001 right before the Tranny’s on these cars started blowing up left & right.
PLUS, I saved an additional 1,440 dollars in PA tax because of the trade-in.

So technically I got nearly 25,500 bucks towards the 6-Speed.
I couldn’t pass up those numbers.

So true. The thing is, I want to keep my CL-S for a LOOOOONG time. I'm just afraid of transmission problems down the road. I already had it switched once. I know it is covered under warranty, but every time I stop on the gas at like 45 mph and it shifts into 2nd and soars through Vtec I worry about blowing those clutch packs again.

Trading in for the 6 speed would be a more of a longevity AND performance choice.

I mean think about it... I've done I/H/E and I'm only as fast as I would be in a STOCK 6 speed. (14.2@98)

I guess it would be a poor financial mistake. We need more information on the performance/drivability/reliability of the beefed transmissions from Velocity Resources.

I'd pay the $2500 our how ever much it is to swap the stock tranny with the VR one if I knew it wasn't going to die on me suddenly. I do really LOVE my car though.

Oh, and Mason... Bring it

Just sell it, and look for a 6 speed. Esp if you're a long timer. why keep are car you don't trust or want? Took me a year to decide and sell my first 6 speed and get another one. Yes, no one can understand why I did it, but I like this one much better.
It's the one I should have bought 13 months ago, but I had an impulse buy and got a pretty good deal. I also got a very good deal on the 2nd one.
I say go for it. The 6 speed is a different car than the automatic IMO.

Actually Steve, I was having the same Dilemma and I have had my car and loan for about the same length of time (purchased 4/17/03). I really wanted a SMR 6 speeder with low miles. After calculations I figured I would be upside down also. I got mycar as a CPO for $22.5 with 27 k miles. After taxes I was financing 24.7 or something @ 4.9 % @ 60 mos with monthly payments at $461.74/month. I still owe about 19k on it as of now also. So What I have decided to do is keep the thing for another year and pay MORE each month than what I am required too. Then next year I will get rid of her, and hat way, the CL-S 6's and G35c will be down a little in price. This is my plan as of now, but of course my mind can change with the next breeze that blows through.

Seems like you are in the exact situation as I am.

Out the door I paid something like $25k with extended warranty, taxes, tags, etc. In May of 2003. I'm at 6% for 60 months (being 21 hurts my chances of getting a lower rate).

I put $5k down. My payments are $432.69/month. I had been paying extra for a while there. But then I signed up to have my payments directly withdrawn from my account. So I really don't even think about it. I was paying like $460/month. I still owe $19k. Problem is I do so much driving. I've put 30k on it already.

I'll wait till next year. Trade it in during the Spring. Drive it all summer. Then buy a beater for the winter so it doesn't get so many miles on it. It would be nice to have a small pickup truck for work. Seems as if I've got it all figured out....

Unless I decide to get the VR transmission and CT supercharger that is

I hear ya, I was 21 at the time and had good credit and recently paid off another car. Maybe the proof of the other car being paid off gave them reason enough to give me such a low rate. I am the same way with miles. I bought it with 27k miles and now have 46k (little over a year). I thought about getting a beater to save miles, but I enjoy driving my CLS too much for that, and I don;t have to deal with teh snow.
