Should I race a '00 328ci?

I used to have a 99 328is until I totaled it a while back.... Now that I have the CLS one of the guys from the bimmer forum wants to race me with his 328ci (not the 330ci, this one came before it). If I'm correct, I should be able to take him, right? BTW, his is a stick, and pretty much stock.

If he's smart, he will try to get you to race in turns. If so, he will win. In a drag race, even if he shifts perfectly, you will edge him out. BMW, your 328is is faster than a 328Ci.

See, that's what I figured...I remember BMW tuned down that 328 in the new E46 body. Just for my info., what's the average 0-60 for the CL type S?

For the Cl-S Road & Track got 6.4 and Motor Trend got 6.7

A manual 328 has never been tested- the auto was run to 7.1 by Motor Trend. But the sedan got 6.4 from Car and Driver.

Someguy,
Actually You have that backwards. Motor Trend did 6.4 and R&T did 6.7. I think MT did a test on the 328is a while back and did a 14.7 1/4. Not sure about 0-60 though.

If the BMW driver really knows how to drive (race) a manual trans car, then I think it will be close. Or at least a better match-up than most others here think it will be.....

Yea, I got it backwards. I just looked at C&D, the CL-S ran 6.8 and 15.2. The 0-60 on a 99' 328is was 6.2. 328Ci, my best guess would be 6.4-6.6, since that would be what you race. It has a tiny bit more power than the e36, but weighs a few hundred pounds more.

This is the only CL-P vs. 328 race I could find. http://www.acura-cl.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/004532.html

I think that 328 should be able to beat a CL-P. Auto would be close, but the 328 should win. A 328 manual much faster than a CL-P, but slightly slower than a Type-S.

That's really something that I want to observe. I heard different stories about 328 manual vs CL-S. As an owner of a 328ci, I might be a little bias towards BMW. But, I have not raced any CL-S yet. So, I won't say that 328 would lose in straight way. Both cars' 1/4 miles are identical. Some magazines say 328 are faster, some say CL-S faster. However, I already test drove a CL-S. And yes, I am impressed by the refinement of the engine and how polite the car responded to potholes. I can feel the CL-S does a very fast 0-80. But when I shifted to 4th gear, the acceleration seemed a little slower than my 328ci. And yes, I love that VTEC sound. Much smoother than my GSR and The exhaust notes was much better than my stock 328ci.
I've heard that 330 AT can beat CL-S. The stories are both on www.bimmer.org and on this board. The tests were done by 2 good friends who attempeted the races for 12 times. They even switched cars to make the races more even. The results were after 45 mph, 330i AT took off. That's hard to believe even for me, a bmw owner.
I also have tested my car with a good friend of mine who happened to own a 330ci AT. And guess what, I won him slightly. Prolly because of more aggresive gear ratio on my 328ci.
Anyhow, I would be very curious on who would win this battle. If anyone in this board lives in Austin, Texas, I would be more than willing to have a friendly race on straightways.

I'm not half as trigger-happy (to try some dogfights w/ people on the street) in 75+ degree weather than I am in < 60 degree weather. The TL-S is just a dog in hot weather, I think. I don't know how the BMW feel in hot weather, but I would imagine that the manual tranny would help in the launch and it would be pretty darn close. I've yet to go up against a 330i stick, but I'm looking fiercely.

what's the 0-60 time for the CL-P??? If a CL-P races a CL-S, how bad will it lose? (carlengths?)
