short ram vs. CAI

the short ram is ALOT louder...but you can feel a difference esp. late night early morning...the CAI has a lil more pull

I will take my CAI apart tonight and make it a short ram. So you're saying that I will hear more but feel less right??

It'll have to do with temp and conditions. The CAI will be less prone to heat soak. When in traffic the Short will start ingesting warm air sooner and will take longer to cool.

But on a cold start or having been on the highway for a few minutes, there will be little to no difference.

Made the switch tonight to make my CAI into a short ram. Haven't had a chance to drive on it, but it sounds very mean!!

Made a CAI out of my Short ram yesterday with some 2.5" piping, a couple of clamps and an intake coupler. Sounds sweet and I noticed a pretty nice differnce in power over the original short ram setup. Why r u guys all converting to short ram???

My understanding is the CAI gives you more power in the upper end range of RPM & a shortram gives you more power in the lower range of RPM's. Is this correct and if so, would you prefer to have more power in the low range or high range. My instinct says low end, more power off the line. What do you think?

If what you say is right that a ram is low end and a CAI is high range I'll take the low range. After all that is what gears are for (to drop the RPM back down into the lower range) and I doubt that you'll get to speeds that would get you into the high RPM range w/o the ability to upshift. However What was said before that a CAI is better because it cools faster and so on makes sense.

Do your intakes whistle and stuff while driving slowly? I mean as I accelerate the noise is gone, but when I am just cruising, my intake makes a whistling sound? I just wasn't sure if this was normal. It is really loud and annoying if my windows are down, and it makes me feel like I am making my car sound cheaper to other people...am I doing something wrong? I have no problems with it myself, but I don't want other people to not buy a CL just because they hear my car

TW1112,

The "Whistleing.." may be easily fixed by checking the couplers and verifying that they are sealed air tight... A whistle is usually the vacuum sucking air through a crack or gap in the induction tubing. The only other real possibility is the filter that you are using... I use the K&N RF-1007 its a 7" cone with chrome cap... My CAI is virtually indetectable at idle or cruising ranges aside from and ever so slight "sucking" .."Whooosh" sound.. It Screams at VTECH RPM's ... as I think you heard on my website... But for now check all your induction seals amd possibly switch the filter....

MikeS,

The difference between the "Popsicle on a stick" Short Ram and the CAI is that the Short Ram will most likely make more power at high RPM vs the CAI which will make more power in the mid to high RPM; mainly more in the midrange. The reason why this is true is that it's due to the length of the tubing. The shorter the tubing the higher the RPM at which a resonance will occur, leading to a bump in HP; thus if you look at most of the Dynos for a CAI and underhood Short Ram, most of the HP is in the midrange for the CAI and upper range for the Short Ram. The longer tubing will have a lower RPM at which a resonance occur leading to a HP bump in the midrange.

TW1112,

Yes that is the the case with all CAI's as mentioned in the post above what you hear after you shut it down is the "vacuum" effect of the CAI induction tube starting to get positive pressure... in short... same noise as the vacuum cleaner after you turn it off

Yeah yeah.....but it gets hot! I used to always drive with windows down, but then someone told me that the less I use my AC, the more it will smell. I really don't want to pay 99 bucks for that AC cleaner thing at the dealer.

it's alot better to fart with the windows down and the ac off then with it on...because with it on the smell gets stuck in the AC

Xephyr2k, I am intrested in an intake. My stock one was destroyed in my accident, and I'll need something to replace it with when the car gets out of the shop. Do you make custom CAI's for the Type-s? If so, what are your prices and do you have a pic I can see?

Thanks!

Tw1112 & Jayru,

Thanks for the vote of confidence Its been sounding and performing consistently better in the past week... I attribute that to the fuel mappings being optimized for the increase in airflow and density... BUT my damned GTECH still hasnt arrived !!! I ordered monday and its still not here
Jayru send me an email if you are interested

Nothing will beat CAI. Dyno Proven. On integra, everybody who had short ram intake dynoed least throughout the whole powerband then a CAI setup.
