Shifting - 5sp auto - question

Let's say you're cruising along at 45 or 50mph. You come to a turn that requires you to slow down to 35.

Now, if the car is in D4, it won't downshift to accelerate unless you really nail it - it just sits in 4th. I hate how that bogs on the engine, so if i'm using SS i'll usually downshift to 3rd to accelerate and then go back to 4th when i'm up to speed.

Are there any pros/cons to this?

Well if you read the Acura tranny findings in the Tranny forum you'll see it says that they've found the reason for the tranny failure is mainly because the temperature rises extremely high between shifts in 3rd gear ... So if you're constantly in and out of 3rd gear you could potentially cause your tranny to die quicker. Depending on when your car was made of course ... if it has most of the tranny mods it shouldnt be as big of a deal I guess.

Check out the thread that EricL posted over there .. its a HUGE read, but very informative. 3->4 and 4->3 I dont think was as much of a problem as 2->3 and 3->2 but I'd still be careful.

For the nth time... if the tranny crap on you then just make an appointment for a FREE replacement!..

I am fed up with tranny threads. please move this thread to the Tranny section.

If I still remeber correctly my CLS is build in 03/00. My CLS is immune from tranny failure

I didn't even consider the transmission problem with this. I was jsut looking for comments on the subject, and to learn a little bit more about the transmission. I could care less if the tranny fails - although i'm at 61k on the original.

I also wanted to ask if others did the same thing i did - if anyone else agrees that accelerating in 4th is pure pain. Of course i forgot to include that in the original post.

Therein lies the beauty of SS. Have it in 4th, and when you approach the corner at 45 or 50 mph, downshift to 3rd, tap the break slightly to get to 35, and again downshift to 2nd. You'll plow out of that corner, in the meantime making fun screeching noises with your tires!

Dont stay in 4th, I mostly stay in 2nd until 60mph. Then 3rd, 4th and 5th is kinda not used most of the time. I figure if my tranny is gonan die, it might as well die sooner, before the warranty ends...

I'd come out of 4th and into 3rd all the time via. SS. Isn't that what the slushbox tranny is for???

That's the way to do it, only thing to remember is to down shift prior to the turn (down shifting during a turn can get ugly)..
