Semi official Tranny problem statistics

Hello all,

Since this finally looks like it needs to be on the FAQ, I used the SEARCH and got these final numbers.

These people have all gotten their transmission replaced:
AcuraCLSGuy, aefitchgirl, ATLCL-S, both, Buffa, C.Z., Chris, CLpower, CL-SPS, delmonk, fastvtecCL, Henry, kmanpete, JSuppi, Ken806, mantis23, nanoDave,
Nitin, superdds, Rod, SidVicious, silverstarr, Smeg.

A couple of other people have had their transmission solenoid replaced, and a few more had rough transmissions that got cleared up when they got a tranny fluid change. I did not count them.

There were a couple of people who had
possibly minor problems (tranmission fluid leak), but the dealer just said "screw it, just order a new tranny." They ARE included, since it is possible it truly was a major tranny breakdown.

Anyway, the final dead tranny count is therefore 22 users. That is 22 out of
2251 registered members and an unknown number of non-registered viewers, making
the total a shade less than 1%.

This public service announcement has been brought to you by the letters F, A, and Q.

Good job Chod. How long did it take you to search through all of those posts.

Chod, the only man to have seen every post known to acl.

Chod... very impressive gathering of information.

Based on these numbers (1% of total users) it is hardly likey that Acura will issue a recall for a defective part.

One side note: The 1% number may not be accurate due to the fact that many of the earliest members may have had tranny problems and don't post here anymore. So the percentage may actually be greater.

that ain't close to what i have so far. i have 9 "official" tranny problems (those that have been replaced and those that are confirmed to need replacement).

but i know i haven't had any emails from people hwo don't post anymore.

i guess it's a lower % than the people in my highschool of close to 1000 that had claps.

The only thing I am going to question (although I feel the work was very well done) is the 2251 members. Of those I would "guess" there are less than 1,000 CL-S owners? That's my input, and if accurate the rate is over 2%, which as stated is hardly recall territory, but it should be TSB and automatically require Acura to extend Tranny warranty to 100,000 miles? YMMV

Search wasn't too bad, I only read anything
with 'tran' in the title (to catch either tranny/transmission)

That's a real good point about how many of the 2251 users are actual '01 Cl owners. In that mix are 1st gens, and some acura-tl refugees. No way to figure THAT one out!
However I would assume that the far majority of people on here are '01+ CLs.

If anyone on this list wants to e-mail me
their DOM info, etc, I'll be glad to gather
statistics and put that on the FAQ as well.

Yes, I agree the research was well done. But I also have to contend that not all the 2,000+ members are 2nd gen. CL owners. I can see quite a few that are 1st gen. CL owners or people that just like to visit this board. It has been speculated that a lot of these tranny problems are from the Type S owners. So, out of the 2,000+ members, how many are Type S owners? I am sure we do not have 2,000+ Type S owners that frequently post on this board. Because of this, the percentage of people with tranny problems is most likely higher.

Chod....great job...I know many of us wanted to know those numbers. I had one incident with my transmission where I was traveling about 50MPH and it took the transmission about 2-3sec (a slight pause) before it shifted from 4th into 5th gear. Got to take to the dealer one of these days. Thanks a bunch for your research.

I created a members registry for the S2000 board I was on a few years ago. It was usefull for us to track down problems that people had etc. I can change it over to be a CL Registry if anyone is interested.

You can see what it looks like at www.jakepratt.com/s2000members

It is all automatic and lets members post pictures.

The problem would be someone to devote the time and energy, as well as "making" everyone fill out some additional information about themselves. That would be a tough sell, as many people are very private. But, it would be one hell-of-a data base.. YMMV

but what's good for the goose is good for the gander (don't ask me, it's something my boss said to me?!).

chod said that he scanned through topics and counted the number of tranny problems.

an example:

my tranny is fine, but reading these topics made me paranoid. so now i pay attention to the when my car shifts. i say to myself, "i never felt it shift like this before", even though it always has...i just never paid attention.

so now i post a topic "i think i have tranny problems" and then i say my car isn't shifting like it used to, chod would count me as having a problem, even though i don't have one.

i got several emails to add to my list but i didn't count because it was something like this. it wasn't anything like the tranny slippage that is the common sympton.

This is not correct. My list is only people
who have gotten transmission replacements as per their dealer.

If someone said their tranny acted up, but that was all that happened, they were not counted. It could be a one time glitch, or a single part like the solenoid or something. I'm only counting people who were basically told "well, apparently your entire transmission is hosed, i'll get you a new one"

A notable example is Amir, who had reported trouble. However he (at the time) was not counted, until today, since the dealer agreed to replace his transmission.

As many other people have said, these numbers can not be completly accurate because of the fact that not everyone has a type s or even a CL on this board (me for example), but i do still commend you chadthewacko for your going through all the posts to get these numbers....i do want to say that i do hope that Acura does something about these problems cause they have definitly begun to influence my thoughts about buying a CL in the future (April-ish), but by that time who knows maby the manual trany will be available

mrdeeno, maybe you can send Chod the info that has been e-mailed to you so that it can all be put together, since he already asked for us to send him our DOM, which I think we sent you. Good work, but it is very hard to really read these numbers statistically, like everyone has already mentioned, since of the 2K+ members registered, some have more than one member name, some don't even own a CL, or have 1st generation CLs, and some only came on to post a couple times when they encountered specific problems, etc, etc, etc...

ChodTheWacko, let me start by thanking you . . . This is just the kind of info I was looking for . . . Well, you can count me in on your resources you gathered earlier . . . I am also getting my transmission replaced . . . It all happen this past Sunday . . . I wasn’t lucky enough to make it to the dealership with my car . . . I had to exit off the highway and call the Acura’s toll-free 800 number . . .
Now I know why those damn new transmissions are back ordered . . . =)

The total is now 31 people out of 2528 members,
making 1.4% of the total members.

Keep in mind the following:
1) Not all 2528 members have a CL-S, but it is impossible to
determine how many do. So take it for what it's worth.
2) I -think- everyone below had a CL-S
3) These are the members from postings up to October 9. I'm still catching up on posts.

Members of the Dead Tranny Club:

AcuraCLSGuy, aefitchgirl, amirsafdari, ATLCL-S, both,
Buffa, C.Z., Chris, CLpower, CL-SPS,
delmonk, DRIVE HARDER TYPE-S, fastvtecCL, Fl-typeS, Henry,
kmanpete, JSuppi, Ken806, mantis23, Mercury,
moomaster_99, nanoDave, Nitin, osclude, Rod,
