Oh and to answer your question, yes you'll always do better selling it private party. The dealership needs to make money when they sell your car, so they have to have the room to mark it up over the price they pay you for it.

Unless it has 60K miles on it, that's a screw job. Discontinued or not, that car is worth more than 19.5K.

Sell it yourself and get more.

But if you're trading it in at the dealer to buy a car from them, you'll also get some tax savings on the new car...so you figure $19,500 plus the 6% or so sales tax...probably just under $21,000 value. Still screwed, but you may be able to negotiate a little more....dealer's gotta make some money of the car as well.

Sell it on your own...I'm sure you can get at least a few thousand more.

Go private. You try and negotiate more and theyll try and bone you somehwere else in the paperwork.

I hooked up my friend to buy an 03' cl-s auto with navi in agean blue with 10K miles for 22.5k so 19.5 sounds about right.

I think brand new ones are going for 25K so I would negotiate to see if you can get $21K and close the deal cause it will never get better.

I sold my 6speed for $21,500 with 10K and bought my clk430 for $6k less than what they wanted originally so I made out both ways....but then again I bought my 6spd used for $26,500 with 3k miles on it.

my o2' I bought for $29K and only got $22k for it but it had 22K miles on it.

my advice is dont look at the money you lost because its gone youll never get it back. Sell it for the highest you can and try to get your new car cheapest you can and keep it moving. The longer you wait the less youll get and the more miles you put on the less youlll get.

selling a car is a pain in the ass...if you want an acura go to the cheapest selling acura dealer and trade in youll save in taxes. If you sell for $21K and buy no car its great but if you sell for $21k and buy another than youll be paying the tax for the 21K anyways.

$20,000 trade in is equal to $21,650 sold privately cause of the taxes so unless you can get $23K privately it almost doesnt seem worth while.

Tax is tax...whether you trade at a dealership or not. I do it with every car...just instead of them doing the form, you fill it out. A tax credit is a tax credit, period.

Hell, I'm asking $21,500 for my 02 & had a buyer already but his credit sucked. Either way, I'm getting plenty of calls.

Don't get suckered into that trade-in value crap...sell it out-right & don't waste/give your money away.

here in NY lets say you want to trade for a $40K car well let see

$40K - $20K trade in = $20k plus tax difference.... totalling $41650 according to Ny taxes for your new car

if you sell privately let say for $21,500

$40K plus tax = $43,300 minus your $21,500 difference of $21800 they are about the same except less headache

so instead of paying $41650 for your new car you end up paying $43,300 for selling your car privately for $21,500 than $20K trade-in

DE law says I only pay on the difference, no matter what. Plus, our tax is only 2.75%

On ebay they have 2 2003 6spd's that are selling for the buy it now option of $22,500 and $20,500, from dealers.........resale has gone to turd.

In the philly area, there's like 25 CL's & they are all in the mid 20's.

A few CLP's in the $18-19K range, etc.

But most 2002-2003 S's are $22>$26K.

Try taking it to car max- they usually give a much higher price, especially honda/acura. plus they will give u a quote that is good for 2 weeks so u can think on it. I use to sell hondas in college park md and we sent our trade ins up to car max whenever they didnt like what we offered and would tell them to come back with the check- use to piss the gsm off but they gave the customer a lot more than we were offering.

With all the websites out there listing invoice prices, some dealers make more money on used cars then they do on new cars.

You said what they are willing to give you on your CLS for a trade, but that's only part the of the Big Picture.

If you got the dealer down to invoice on the new car, they'll lowball you on the trade in so they can make the $$ there. IF you pay MSRP for the new car, they'll give you more $$ on the trade in. OR they can screw you both ways and lowball you on the trade in and make you pay MSRP on the new car, and make huge $$ off of you.

Me, I ain't gonna get rid of my CLS for awhile, I can't see getting only 20K for a car that I paid $29K for 15 months ago. I'll wait till the depreication curve bottoms out a little on the car in a few years.

In Arkansas, if you sell your car privately and buy another car w/i 30 days you still only pay taxes on the difference not the full purchase of your new car..

These two statements couldn't be more true. People have all kinds of common sense...until they step foot in the dealership...then it's all down hill.

I am a banker & work with dealerships on a daily basis, I can attest to the fact that they certainly DO live off their used car sales. Dealers make squat on new car sales these days, so that's why trade values are so low at the lots. It's even reflected in the lower auction prices. Dealers just cannot afford to make 'average profit' anymore after the last 5 or so years of 0% interest/huge rebates.

That's why it absolutely kills me to see guys on here say they 'HAVE' to take what the dealer offers...or "The depreciation is so high on our cars because they are discontinued...". :blahblahblah:

That's bullshit. The depreciation is high on most guys cars because 1) They paid way too fuckin much the first time & financed too much<because they traded in their previous car too> 2) Every new car takes the biggest hit in the first 2 years, mainly because you're paying off dealer profit/markup...similar to points being paid in the beginning of a mortgage.

I used to sell both used and new at the honda dealer.

All my money and everyone elses came from used cars sales. Only new cars I made anything on were s2000s and Odys cause they werent being discounted.

Markups on most imports isnt that big at all, specially honda/acura.

That's the way it is here...you get 60 days to file it yourself, or the dealer will do it for you if you trade.

You know, I just looked up the WRX on autotrader.

Case in point...that car is nowhere near being discontinued...BUT...you can pick up a used 03 for $20K. Now THAT is depreciation...losing $8K in less than one year...that's bad.

They had 02's in the $17-19K range also...AND THESE ARE RETAIL PRICES...imagine trying to trade that car in....YIKES.

$19,500 was the highest offer they made. I told them in the nicest way possible to eat a dick. I was looking for 21,500 but probably would have taken 21k.

I've seen the same thing with alot of sports cars. I've seen a couple of 350Z's (track and touring) with 9-11k miles RETAIL for 26K (used car dealer). This is after the original owners paid MSRP for the privilage of being the first one on the block to own one.

Yeah, we have a ton of Nissan dealers around here, so they are becoming more & more common. Prices are getting better.

A new WRX for $22K...how? Base retail is $25K. Maybe a stripped down model at invoice...but if it's an auto with any adds, you're at $28K easy retail.

My dad is a used car dealer. I've been to many Dealer Auctions.

They will list that car in newspaper ads at $23,999 for the first two weeks, then drop it to $23,495. After floor-plan interest, advertising, and sales commissions, they are still going to make $5K net profit.

Don't listen to this people that say it's soooo hard to sell your vehicle - It's NOT! You will put another ~$3K in your pocket!
