Naw, I'll probably leave it alone and focus on the project car. The M5 is good enough for a daily driver. Why mess with the value and the warranty when we will soon be building something that will be painfully quick.

Funny thing is their exhausts get hot as hell. Was at a BMW club meet once at a dealership, and they had one on the lift and accidently hit my head against the exhaust Burned a hole right through my hat.

But the M5 is an amazing car. One of our friends has a 540 6 speed with M package and its incredable, and that pales in comparison to the M5. Plus I think you would like the interior space more than the 3.

That is not quite what I was thinking about. I don't think that would be allowed as a CPO.

 

I did go check out the one in the first picture I took and went for a drive. It was about 50 degrees then so it took a little bit to get warmed up. It was pretty cool watching the redline increase as it warmed and then once up to temp a little beep came on to tell me.

First thing I noticed was the clutch; it was heavier than my car. But not too bad and can certainly be handled. The shift throw was also heavier and much longer; but then again, easily handled. The steering weight was very much welcomed over the too sensitive CL-S. It felt right and as with all BMW's, the steering was precise. I didn’t push the handling much but it felt as expected; superior to my CL-S6.

But the big aspect I wanted to feel was the power. I was rolling on the throttle a little while it was warming up and the car was very easy to drive. Once up to temp I switched on the Sport mode (you could feel the change in throttle input response) and got on it in first. Wow, I haven't had that level of pull in the low gear in my car ever. The traction light did flash but the car continued to pull hard. I went to 2nd with an easy shift and got back on it and it also pulled very hard.

I went to 3rd and back on it and it still pulled hard. But this time I know my CL-S6SC/IC pulls harder in the same gear and RPM. More power, lighter weight and more aggressive gearing will do that. But it was obvious the benefits of RWD at the lower speed in that I am very traction limited; whereas the M5 was not as much. It would still pull harder than the CL-S would with just the HBP, pre-IC and more boost. But not as hard as mine currently does at the higher speeds. But it pulled hard enough for me and would make staying out in front of traffic very easy.

The throttle response was incredible. But probably the thing that put the biggest grin on my face was the sound. The sound of that exhaust was intoxicating. It was mellow and pleasant while driving but when serious throttle was applied it went into a frenzy. It was still deep and V8 derived without a doubt, but there was more to it. It just had a certain authority to it I loved.

Anyway, this is a car I will be getting. I don't know if this is the one as I still need to sell my car. But one like it will be had and I wouldn't mind taking this one. The Black Carbon color was great as was the interior (silver trim in this one).

Too bad the E55 AMG doesn't come in manual(another option for you Steve). I detailed one today black w. charcoal gray int., it was absolutely beautiful car.
469 hp(not even a ZO 6 has that) is quite a bit off power and no need for add ons.

 

But the BMW has waay fewer electrical gremlins that will make you good friends with your dealer.

One of my good friends has an 01 M5 (Lemans Blue----IMHO the best color on the M5). Anyway, to be honest, in my experiences driving his car, i was not that impressed with the power with a non aggressive launch. Dont get me wrong, its still very good, but maybe i expect more from an almightly M5. However, I love the power off the shifts on the M5. Shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd seems as if you never left the gear you were in. The power is just so seemless.

Anyways, best of luck on the sale of your car and with your new car. Im sure if you put your CL-S on other car enthusiast forums, it will sell in a heartbeat.

Not at all, he was somewhat encouraging me to get on it. Nor was I abusive though, just testing the waters.

In fact, this BMW dealer has always test driven aggressively. When we bought the E46 328i the sales person was hammering a demo car through the turns and hit a pot hole on purpose to demonstrate the stability at speed. Needless to say, we were impressed and placed an order for one that evening.

 

keep this in mind steve, i have a 67 camaro that might suit your needs for the future project car.

 

m5's are a wonderful vehicle. A buddy of mine has one, with the Active Autowerke (local here in South FL) intake setup, Dinan ECU, and I believe BB Triflow exhaust (not sure as for exhaust), not to mention the 19" HRE's... however the other day another buddy and I were in it, the car seemlessly pulls through 3rd and 4th gear, however as you mentioned 1st and 2nd are truly impressive. The traction control on those cars can get annoying (hit the 1st to 2nd gear shift hard inducing wheelspin with the traction control on and you will gladly meet the dashboard with your forehead). All kidding aside, the M5 is the ultimate sedan (IMHO) with it's RWD setup, throaty V8, and 6spd manual setup. I'm sure you will enjoy yours to the fullest.

 

Does this mean that all the stuff you were going to develop for the J series Honda motor is going out the eindow. Because, i was going to get into an 03 TL-S, hoping that you would be making engine mods for it. I may reconsider getting something else.

 

I saw an M5 today and wanted it!!! I love those cars. I think a nice set of HREs and some simple (but expensive mods unfortunately) would make it a ridiculous ride!

Once more, a change. Jennifer was accepting of the M5 but wasn't thrilled. She did acknowledge that I would love it. But in the end we agreed that for something I drive on business, the M5 didn't make since. But when we move into a new house in a few years, which will have at least three garages, I can get an M5 or something similar along with another vehicle more suited for work.

In other words, she talked me into being more practical.

So, we agreed on the below which I should be picking up in a few days. Once the CL-S sells I will be making a trip down to APR for some parts.

This is a 2001.5 which wasn't titled until Oct. 2001. It has the Audi CPO warranty and is still under standard maintence.
