See this car. Would you describe it as German or American car?
This is the Opel Vectra GSi (actually this RHD version is called Vauxhall Vectra) with a 3.2lt V6 rated at 211 PS, 221lb.ft of torque, max speed 154 mph, 0-60 in 7 secs. The engine is the one you get in CTS.
Would you consider this car as an American car because it is essentially a GM product (for example the Cavalier or a Saturn is a GM product) or as a German car because it was designed in Germany by Opel (the German based and German staffed subsidiary of GM)?
By the same token, would you consider a Saab or a Jaguar as a domestic car?

It kind of look like a combo of the Saturn Ion and the old Cadi Catera. However you label its orgin, the appearance is awkward with those large square (Mercury Mountianeer) headlights, small squared off rear end, and cheap grille. Just my opinion.

Have you noticed in the new Pontiac GTO pics? The car is LHD (in Australia they are RHD) with the Pontiac badge but the speedometer is in Km/h as it a was a Canadian spec car!

Where is my super sauce?
Opel has been a GM product for a very long time. In fact, from their web site:
Opel was marketed in the US in the 1960s and 1970s. I actually owned one in the 1970s (in retrospect - a pretty mediocre car - it had the traditional German electrical problems). You were able to buy them through Buick dealers. Recently, the Cadillac Catera was a re-badged Opel.
I'm not sure about the point of the question. Many manufacturers have global products - our CL-S is a prime example. Made in USA for a Japanese company.
Opel is a German car - its company is owned by GM.
Opel is a brand with a long-standing tradition in Europe and today produces and sells vehicles worldwide. Opel was founded in 1862 in Rüsselheim, Germany and joined the General Motors family of cars and trucks in 1929.

My point is that Opel is a German company (which is owned of course by GM) and its products are distinctive German as a result of the German automotive culture (excellent quality, nice interior/exterior design).
Btw, the new Vectra is an excellent car in terms of quality of materials (I saw it at a dealership in Europe). I am not sure how good it is on the road since I did not drive it.
1970s Opels were not as good, but recently (1990s+) the company has designed very nice cars like the Astra coupe and the Vectra.

Oh, I see.
I would agree with you. Opel is a German product owned by an American company. Saturn is an American product owned by an American company.
The list goes on, especially with recent corporate buyouts...Saab, Volvo, Jaguar, Rover, euro-Ford, Vauxhall, Mercedes...

this car is available in Brazil...i'm there so i know. the details are a little different, but more or less the same car.
It's badged as a chevy down here, along with chevy corsas and celtas (which my european buddy here says is sold as opels in europe).
i think the ones down here are assembled in brazil though.
So does badge engineering make the car an american car because it has a chevy badge now?
