SCARIEST NITE OF MY LIFE, c/o MY CLS

i leave work last nite...car is fine.

short while into my drive home..mar acts up..sord of "pushing"me forward withuot even touching the gas pedal.

now, having my tranny replaced at 14k miles and now having only 25k miles, i thought "it couldnt be the tranny?"

Well. the symptoms got worse, and i started to lose control of the car!!..so i pulled into a nearby parking lot where i strugled to get the car to STOP.
Finally, stopped the car and shut it off..keys out of the ignition.

waited a few minutes and then restarted the car withuot any problems.
Shortly after my second attempt to get home...my car completly went out of control..sord of like on "autopilot"
without touching the accelerator, my car sped to approx 65mph, brakes did me no good at this point....the cars accelerator was stuck, red lights..HERE I COME!
i had to blow through a red light, around cars stopped at the light.
Finally, i got to my turn, but one problem, the car was still doing 40mph and the turn was 90 degrees. SO..i went for it...car felt like it was on two wheels, i couldnt believe i made the turn.

Finally, the car started to accellerate again and this time,...i was headed to a bunch of cars stopped at a four way stop sign,
I had 2 options, stop the car some how with the brakes , or
USE A TREE!
The later option definetly seemed the more likely of the two, until by the grace of god....my car bucked, i thew it into neutral, then jammed the E-brake, and then put it in park , doing approx 50 mph from the time i put it in neutral.

THe car screeched to a halt, sideways, about 75ft from the TREE i thought i may have to use. I took the keys out of the car, and jumped out..thinking like the car was gonna catch fire from the awful smell tha filled the cabin.
Either way,....i was safe, some how, i was out of the car safe.
I called the ACURA dealership close by and told them, they were warned that i would be in around closing time. I called TLC acura care, and they were out there for me in approx 25mins with a tow truck. I hitched a ride to the dealership with a friend and with no questions asked..was given a TSX loaner...(not bad either, bodyit, all the extras).

So..the problem????...MY AEM CAI BY-PASS VALVE threw one of its "rubber rings" into my friggin throttle body!!!!!!!
Do you believe this shit!?

Who do i have to call at AEM to get some answers!..rediculous!

sorry this was so loooooooong!

Holy fuck...did you put the CAI in yourself? If so, AEM would just point the finger at you. Glad you're OK!!!!

You were actually considering hiting a tree at 40mph Do you have a death wish? When you first got the car stopped you should have had it towed from there. Also throwing the car to neutral even with the accelerator stuck might damage the motor but at least its better than hitting a tree.

At least your OK

Wow what a fucking story....I was glued to the screen for the entire thing. Glad to see that you had some quick wits about you in that situation.

I see a TV movie coming out of this...The only question would be who will they cast for your part.

Sounds like a rough night, oh well it could have turned out a lot worse.

I think if he would have turned off the ignition, doesn't that lock his steering wheel also? In that cause, isen't that more dangerous?

SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Throw the car into neutral and then apply the brakes.

That's some scary shit man. Glad you're OK.

My bypass valve broke on my CLS and I just removed the POS. I'm so glad I did. I was afraid something bad could happen.

If he would have turned the key to the "off" position then it would have locked but if he would have stopped at "acc" then he would loose power steering but he could still turn the car it would just take alot of work

yea why not throw the car into neutral? But yea might have been hard to think about those type of things when your car is ALIVE.

Thats some scary shit man.

If the bypass came off.. then wouldnt the intake be open there? I would assume the car would be sucking in air where the bypass was.... so it should have been sounding LOUD. Like a short ram.

That's what I would have done... throw it into neutral and brake... no way I would be tempting fate with red lights or trees.

Glad you're alright and nothing happened... that's some crazy stuff....

But to his defense, like Jesal pointed out... hindsight tells you to put it into neutral, but as I sit here and type... I don't have a clue how I would have reacted.

That should really make people open their eyes and rethink the whole bypass thing.

That's one scary situation. Glad to see nobody got hurt.

I had a similar situation where my floor mat was caught on the gas pedal causing the car to accelerate. Looking back on it my first thought was i should have thrown it in neutral but at the time, much like you, i wasn't think clearly at all.

Agreed (with everything except the by-pass thing... one random failure isn't really an eye opener)... being in that situation is a whole different ballgame. Who knows how I would react myself....

Scary shit. Glad to see nothing bad happened to you. Chap I had the same thing happen to me(with the floormat) with my 280z---I just turned the key off...but still scary shit.

at the tuner shop I went to when I replaced my bypass, the guy i talked to said he had heard of the same thing that happened to delucCl-s happening to 2 other people.

I showed him my bypass, said it looked just like the other busted ones that caused the problem

its really not just a random freak occurence, the AEM bypass is garbage.

like other people have said, its not really necessary anyway. take that off, or if you do want a bypass, get a different brand.

I actully tried sport shifting to engine brake and i tried neutral also...but the damn brakes didnt even begin to stop the car..
Hindsight....im not sure i would have done anything different, maybe got it towed from the first stop..but at that point..i thought it was some freak thing and that it would settle down...

As for the bypass valve....the inner ring...a large rubber piece that actually makes contact with the metal part from the intake tube is what got sucked into my throttle body.

The Dealer and the mechanic have both said they have seen many cars with CAI but nothing like this has ever happened..

saddest part of the story....i lost the intake..no more cool sounds , and back to the stock air box....GOOD THING I SAVED IT!

Just one more reason for me to think this car is a bad omen for me
7 flat tires
1 replaced tranny
electircal malfunction that turned off all lights and shifter
brakes rotors replaced at 10k
and now this.

Just bad luck. I am already on the phone with different dealers...looking for a deal on a new FX.
Im actuall scared of my car!

I don't think you can turn off the ignition while the shifter it's in D because of the "interswitch lock" mechanism that prevents that from happenning.

Wow, exciting story! Glad you are ok.

Just to reiterate what someone said, don't hit that tree. Drive into another parked car, the curb, a fence, but that tree will probably kill you even with the SRS.

Good luck.

Hmmmm....kritikadeo should chime in this thread. A VERY similar event happened to him on the freeway. He called me 3000k miles away from his cell phone yellin and screaming on why his car wouldnt stop accelerating. Slowest speed he was able to cruise on was 40 mph while standing on the brake pedal.

He must of paniced just as you did, since I had to remind him to pop it in neutral so he could pull over safely. After further examination of his situation, it ended up being the throttle cable being stuck. This is VERY ODD...since this happened only AFTER he installed his AEM intake.
