Sad but asshole drivers should YIELD!

Further Proof That Road Rage Kills

June 3, 2003

SEATTLE - Road rage kills.

Where's the proof? Katie Pemberton says the proof is in what happened to her daughter. Sixteen-year-old Georgia Pemberton was an innocent victim of road rage.

"It's sickening, it's horrible," says Katie when she reflects on that night last spring, and what happened Monday night on I-405.

State troopers say the deadly accident on I-405, just before 7 o'clock, was caused by road rage.

The accident happened in the southbound lanes about 1 mile north of Canyon Park.

Investigators say a Chevy Blazer was speeding and weaving through traffic when a Saturn slowed down in front of it. The driver of the Blazer then pulled in front of the Saturn and slammed on the brakes. The Saturn hit the Blazer, sending it rolling several times.

The driver of the Blazer died at the scene.

The driver of the Saturn suffered minor injuries.

Katie Pemberton says Monday night's road rage incident reinforces her mission. She's collected 9,000 signatures asking lawmakers for longer prison terms for traffic deaths caused by road rage. The driver responsible for her daughter's death is serving 3 and 1/2 years.

Pemberton is proposing a 16-year term for road rage deaths because, as she puts it, that's "all Georgia got on this Earth."

"She was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life, but that's gone now. I lost that," says Pemberton who's now the Snohomish County President of Road Rage Victims of America.

For more information about the organization, check out their Web site at www.rageresistance.org.

There's also a Web site honoring Georgia Pemberton at www.georgiapemberton.com

Was the 16 yr old in the Blazer??? I'm confused - it says the Blazer driver died and that it was the Blazer weaving and slamming on it's brakes. Wouldn't that make the entire accident her fault??? It also means she isn't "innocent" as the beginning of the article states. Sucks either way. People out here act like they own the roads.

*******
The driver of the Blazer died at the scene.

Not to encourage ROAD RAGE, but at least the “right” person got the worst of this one.

Who is guilty here?

Have the original link???

Sounds like her daughter died in a different accident. This accident is a bad example.

The link to georgia has a completely different story about the crash, and different car. This story is completely wrong.

Yeah--that makes no sense at first read--and makes only marginally more sense after reading it a number of times.

That writer needs to go back to school.

The driver of the blazer died. The driver of the saturn had minor injuires. The driver of the blazer was weaving in and out of traffic (road rager) and slammed on the brakes. The 16 year old is dead.

Using simple logic, one would have to beleive that the 16 year old was the shithead, and not the innocent victim.

It's hard to show sympathy for anyone here, when the story is fucked up

There are two different stories here.

One is with the 16 year old daughter who died last spring during an accident in which the person who caused it got 3 1/2 years.

The second story happened on Monday night and involves the Blazer and the Saturn. Here the driver of the Blazer was killed after, in a "road rage" state of mind, he slammed on his brakes infront of the saturn.

The second story really isn't that good an example IMO.

The moral of the story here is get of the fast lane and yield to faster traffic. BE AWARE OF WHAT IS GOING ON BEHIND YOU! If someone is coming up fast and you are in the fast lane YIELD! It doesn't matter if you are going faster than the speed limit let them by! In the above story how does that person in the Saturn know there isn't an emergency and the blazer is responding. I'd bet a months pay the 16 year old was never taught about the fast lane law.

Excuse me, but there is nothing that gets me more mad than a left lane bandit. It's the sole cause of traffic jams!

Some people don't know that the rear view mirror attached to the windshield is for other things besides applying makeup

What really gets me is when you pass one of the "self-righteous" fast lane hogs, they still refuse to move over even tho' there is enough room to (and there is a train of cars behind them).

"Slow traffic keep right" !! - I drive a vw bus, so I know when to stay out of the left lane

BTW: there's 2 stories going on in the report ?? Ok, that make sense now. The reporter should be shot tho' for writing the story like that.

The sad part is that the blazer slammed on the brakes causing the saturn to hit them and they died, but the driver of the saturn would be at fault

I do a lot of driving in between Orlando and Tampa. I see this type of story play out every day on I4. There is always one cluless idiot in the fast lane impeeding traffic. Invarably one person will try to teach this person a lesson by manuvering in front of them and slamming on the brakes. THIS NEVER WORKS. The person impeeding traffic is always so clueless they just wonder why that happened, or like the above story the car they are driving is pathetic they end up hitting the person that slammed on brakes.

If people would just yield to faster traffic like the law states there would be no traffic jams, there would be little to no road rage, etc. But alas in Florida drivers education has been discontinued and now we have a whole generation that has no clue how to drive.

The most common story I hear from cluless idiots is, "They shouldn't be trying to pass me in the fast lane I was already going faster than the speed limit". HELLO, THAT DOESN"T MATTER! The law states if you are in the left lane YIELD TO FASTER TRAFFIC! Now does that say anything about speed? NO, JUST YIELD TO FASTER TRAFFIC!

I'm done ranting!

I know the article is confusing, but damn you better read it again. The sixteen year old was in the Blazer's way to the point that the Blazer got in front and slammed on brakes trying to teach her a lesson.

I'm not an analyst. I'm an analist. Just another asshole with an opinion!

This is the only 16 year old referenced in the article above:

"Where's the proof? Katie Pemberton says the proof is in what happened to her daughter. Sixteen-year-old Georgia Pemberton was an innocent victim of road rage.

"It's sickening, it's horrible," says Katie when she reflects on that night last spring, and what happened Monday night on I-405.
"
What happened was a year ago in an unrelated accident.

04/29/2002

"At 11:30 p.m., Georgia and her date had left the dance when an SUV crossed the center line, smashing into their car head-on, killing Georgia. "

The article states the Saturn was in front of the Blazer. The article does not mention the age of any drivers in the accident.

BTW, how much time do you save by speeding? Do the math. It is a waste of gas.

No, the person doing the brake check is at fault...even if someone is slowing you down in the fast lane the mature thing to do after you pass them is just leave them in your dust. This was a situation where the person doing the brake check ended up getting themselves killed. Its funny....watch a NASCAR race and see what a little tap in the rear can do to a vehicles stability....the person from behind is actually the safer party in a brake check.

2 stories, that Pemberton lady is just using this current road rage as an example to compare to her daughters death the previous year. With the accident involving an SUV, she figured it was comparable. why ya'll gotta read so many times to understand? Yep, good thing the driver of the blazer got the worst of it.

Let me guess, you're one of the left lane bandits ?? (only joking w/ ya')

I wrote this in another thread about bad drivers:

I went to Maine last month as saw a bunch of "left lane for passing only" signs. Good for them. I think more states should start posting 'em.

Now, don't get me wrong. I do drive slow sometimes. I own a VW bus that has 67hp. It weighs about 3700lbs (it's a camper). It's slow as molasses, so I stay in the far right lane. If I venture into the left hand lane it's because I'm passing someone going slower then me (slower then a vw bus ??).

Actually depends on how far you are driving. Down the street to the store, you are right, waste of gas to save 5 seconds. Driving 700 miles? Yeah makes a lot of sense to speed. 60 miles an hour = 11.66 hours, 70 miles an hour = 10 hours. 1.66 hours less in the car = priceless.

I usually drive in the middle lane doing 70-75 in a 60 and when I have to pass someone, I usually don't speed up unless I'm passing several cars at the same time and someone faster is coming up from behind. Then I speed up to finish passing or move over if it's safe to do so. If everyone did that then there wouldn't be any problems.

Since you asked I didn’t click on the hyper link. I only read what was in the original post. The 16 year old is as I quoted it. I already did the math, but here it is for you to see.

If the speed limit is 60 mph for 100 consecutive miles and I am travelling at 90 mph at the end of one hour I am 30 miles further down the road than someone travelling the speed limit. Not only that, but base 60 I have saved 30 minutes. Considering the mileage trade off is less than 5 mpg that is well worth it to me. I could be having sex 30 minutes sooner, having dinner 30 minutes sooner, catching that flight I might have missed, and on and on. Of course if you factor a speeding ticket in there it blows my whole theory. However, I’ve had an ESCORT since 1985 and I haven’t had a speeding ticket since then.

Now take that same example over 2 hours. Now I’m 60 miles further down the road and one hour ahead of the person doing 60.

BTW I used base 60 because in Florida a 100 mile stretch of road at 70 mph posted speed limit is very rare if at all. Every time a city limit touches the interstate the speed limit is back at 60.

Ok, I forgot to add a 'usually' to the 'waste of gas.' :P

I've never driven 700 miles in one trip. About 320 at most, and my college was still going to be there 20 minutes later. During a commute it really does not make a difference.

Absolutely, that's based on eye sight alone! I hate to admit it, but I haven't been into a Driver's License office in 17 years. That's legal in Florida! When you get your Driver's license it's good for 10 years. At the end of that 10 years if you've had no problems they roll it over for another 10 years. So, based on that if someone got their license renewed at 60 years old they could be 75 and still legal. How many 75 year olds do you know that should be behind the wheel? There is a ton of 75 year olds behing the wheel in Florida. 80% is conservative for people that old and still driving.

I love to hear other people preach "Slower Traffic Keep Right". I was beginning to think I was the only one who can understand what it means.
I usually keep it between 80 - 90 mph on long road trips. There is always someone policing the fastlane refusing to move over trying to f up my day. Funny thing is I can't tell you how many times I have been given the bird for passing one of these fools in the slow lane. I have to slow down, change lanes, and go around you, and I get flipped off. One guy recently did this and cut me off a few times, I was ready to go at it with him until I saw 3 kids strapped in the back seat(that is how stupid some people are). I trust someone going 80+ mph more than the 60mph driver because the faster driver is 9 times out of 10 paying more attention to what is going on around them.

Traffic jams aside I think there would be ALOT fewer accidents if people didn't hog the fast lane. Less road rage, fewer accidents, cheaper insurance, and less traffic if just a few high and mighty assholes would just move over.

Preach it!!!

So many laws out there punishing the person wanting to drive "reasonably fast", yet no one ever enforces those laws that forbid unreasonable, idiotic, inconsiderate, power-tripping assfaces that love to hold people up!!!

I'm sorry but some of the victims of these road rage incedences bring it upon themselves...in life if you wrong someone unreasonably there will be consequences, no reason it should be different when behind a wheel. Of course I'm not saying murder is justifiable in any case, but don't be shocked when you get burned playing with fire

I haven't seen a thread full of drive fast in the left lane crap in my life.

I'm in the same boat as the rest of you. I drive fast just like everyone else. My '01 has 75,000 miles on it and much of it is in the left lane at 80, 90 and often over 100mph. Constantly. WOT all the time, everyday.

I even know the law that says slower traffic move right. And I agree with it.

But even I am not foolish enough to believe that "speeding" supersedes that law/rule. As a speeder, you have to be willing to accept whatever happens to you as a result of your speeding. You just have to know that people will do foolish things and reacts strangely and unpredictably to your "abnormal" speeding.

Did you know that in a 30mph intersection, if a Toyota is stopped at the stop sign for cross traffic that has the right away...then the Toyota sees the all clear...proceeds into the intersection...hey he didn't see you coming in your Acura...the Acura has the right away but there is a collision. You hit him going 75mph. Who do you think is wrong and will be faulted for the accident?

No posted sign saying "slower traffic keep to the right" is going to convince any normal driver on the road that when traveling at or slightly above the speed limit, they should give way to faster traffic approaching them from the rear by law else they will be held responsible for what happens. That's why they are mad. Cause you are speeding and breaking the law and trying to place them at fault. And tailgating them. They have every right to drive at the posted pace in either lane without the harassment. As a speeder, you can't take that sign that says "slower traffic move right" and turn it into your licence to persecute those that don't abide fully at all time. If you do, that's road road.

And speeders who recognize this...this fact that some people are not going to be happy with your speeding...speeders who recognize this and respond by dismissing hostile reactions from other pissed drivers...that's the difference between the professional speeder who drives with skill and finesse, trying to get your speed trill on at the same time doing your best making sure nobody else pays for the chances and risks you put everybody else and the novice speeder who is a menace to society trying to kill someone by driving like a fast-moving out of control maniac.

Stop giving speeders a bad name by trying to shift the blame to the other driver for the unfortunate meeting between us in YOUR lane. Stop giving speeders a bad name by refusing to slow down to give the unlucky driver who found himself in your lane a chance to move over. Stop giving speeders a bad name by showing that you too drive in the right lane when not passing and you're just not one of those people who say "I'm the fastest dick on the road, nobody can beat me; I'm gonna put my cruise on 90, get in the left lane, here I come, everybody better get oughta my way!" Cause then you WILL have people trying to halt you. You might be driving so fast that after checking my rearview mirror every 15 seconds, I didn't see you coming up so fast. The left side of the road looks just like the right side of the road. There are no special priviledges on either side for every road all over the state. It's all about courtesy and common sense. Some freeways have left side exits. Because the exit is on the left side, it is now an airport runway you have to take a higher speeds?

I just got in on the tread and I'm shocked that people really are convinced that they have a right to speed and others should give way by law. It just ain't so. There are no laws on the book that will support your speed...not even the "under the reasonable conditions" law. "I had to go 90 to get out of the way of that 18-wheeler that was bearing down on me." It's only a courtesy and no cop is going to write up someone doing 55 in a 55 holding up seven camaros in the left lane trying to do 80. There is a such thing as impeding and holding up...but that's when you are doing 45 in a 55 in the left lane while the right lane is clear and wide open for you to daydream there instead. And even that's iffy, except on I-90 in far western Montana.

I feel like I haven't made my point. I'm not saying there haven't been incidents of cops writing slow driving tickets. I'm not saying cops should enforce that sign. Personally I don't drive in the left lane holding up traffic just in case someone tries to accuse me of that. I don't do it. If I have 3 other people in the car and I'm going to drive like a normal person, I stay in the right lane. The few times I happen to get in the left lane but still don't want to drive like a mad man with folks in my car, it is then that I see what a real lunatic speeder is all about. You oughta see all the people who think it is ME breaking the law. Try it.

The left lane is for passing. If you are not passing somebody, drive in the right lane. I too get pissed when people think they own the road and I know what it means cause I've been driving for 15+ years. But I certainly don't expect everyone else on the road to understand it either by experience or by law. Slow drivers in the left lane is a tiny tiny problem for accidents. Let is go, you can't change this. Focus on something you can change.

I'm done ranting, sorry so long but I should have started on this a little bit in the beginning.

Sounds like an excellent example for graduated drivers licences. Keep the young testosterone-filled kids away from vehicles until they can learn some patience.

once again i agree with kensteele. when i am speeding I don't expect anyone to get out of my way. I know that most people don't look at their rearview mirror as often as I do. and a lot of people aren't that courteous anyway. I do get very pissed on the road sometimes. but i usually overcompensate later.
Like today for example, this guy's lane was ending and had to merge into my lane. there are many signs, "lane ends merge left" but he didn't slow down or yield or even speed up. so i floor it. burn out, speed down some slow one way street in waikiki. I feel bad, but its too late now.:o
Later on in the evening I am approching a stop light that had just turned red. I'm in the right lane. I notice the guy behind me had his blinker on to turn right. I look left, no one is there so I change lanes at the last minute so the guy can turn right on the red. He waves. the next three cars also turn right and wave. I'm such a nice guy! (after i'm done being an asshole!)

and BTW, most highways here have left turns so there really is no fast lane. the left lane is usually slower.

Biggest bunch of crap I have ever seen on this forum. And there has been some crap spread on this forum, but this one takes the cake. How many times can someone contradict themselves in a single post? You can't say, "They have every right to drive at the posted pace in either lane without the harassment" and then turn around and say "The left lane is for passing. If you are not passing somebody, drive in the right lane". Make up your mind!
I have been in several other countries where "SLOWER TRAFFIC MOVE RIGHT works, and it works well". It is only here in the USA where people think they have a right to drive any way they want to. The "harassment" you speak of is what reminds people in other countries to move over. The reminder is usually greeted with an, "OOPS my bad and a friendly wave". It is only in the good ol' USA where people take the "harrassment" as a threat.

Finally, GET OUT OF THE FAST LANE WHEN SOMEONE COMES UP BEHIND YOU. I DON"T CARE HOW FAST YOU ARE GOING!

Bill, since you live in the US, why not give it up and drive with US drivers in mind instead of driving like everyone drives in Europe?

When you give up that bad idea, you drive like me and driving is easy. When you adhere to your selfish rights on the road, you increase your stress level and you start thinking it is other drivers who are breaking the law instead of your [speeding] self.

I know you think all that I said was just a bunch of ying yang but it only reflects that I feel my fast driving is something that I am getting away, unfairly imposing on others and not "it's my right to drive" that way or screw what the other driver thinks.

So just for the record, to address the apparent contradiction, I'll explain...but you have to try to just for a second, stop thinking me, me, me and think:

"They have every right to drive at the posted pace in either lane without the harassment." This is allowed by the law regardless of how you or I feel. If you believe it is untrue and you act on that, most drivers feel you are harassing them. That's why you see people that slow down, ride their brakes, or refuse to move over. Can't you see this?

"The left lane is for passing. If you are not passing somebody, drive in the right lane." My hope and my wish and my opinion. Everyone doesn't share that belief and it certainly is not required by law. I actually don't expect most drivers on the road to adhere to this and therefore I can't really drive with this in mind.

See the difference? Follow the logic. I feel the same way about left lane bandits the same way most people here do. Except for one thing. I don't have the right to force someone else to comply to these rules. If you feel you have the right to force somebody to comply and that the law is on your side, and you are in the right and they are in the wrong, you won't understand these statements.

"People should move over. I wish people would move over. Don't they know the left lane is for passing? Now I'm going to have to slow done. And if you don't move over, I'm going to have to change lanes to pass you. Since you are moving at the speed limit, I will not pass you and then jerk back in front of you too soon. I will not stare at you as you pass by and I will not make obscene gestures. When I am a passenger in my co-worker's car, I will not ask him/her to move to the right lane when not passing. He's driving HIS way." And so on. That's what the two statements mean.

I'm exhausted.

Ken, with all due respect, you are the reason there are traffic jams. Your attitude is just like all the cluless iditos, but you are worse becuase you know better and choose to be the way you are.

When other countries are better at something WHY won't you recognize it? We don't do everythig the best way in this country. Another attitude that causes problems. Other countries have a lot to teach us. Driving is definitly one of them!

If you are in a car pool and the driver is driving like a clueless idiot what is wrong with pointing it out? You'd say something if the person was constantly cutting people off. Clogging the fast lane is the same exact thing. Only they are cutting people off in mass!!! In an effort to straighten you out there is no HIS WAY, YOUR WAY, MY WAY. THERE IS ONLY THE CORRECT WAY. You just happen to be driving the WRONG way.

I will NEVER drive"your way". Slower traffic move right is not a choice regardless of what you think. A citizen has the right to point that out in the same way that First responders are required to help in an emergency. FIRST responders are required to help even if the person pushes them away and says, "It's against my religon".

Selfish? You want to see selfish look in the mirror! You and every one like you. I'll be the first to admit there are way more of you than there are of me, but that doesn't make you right. Was the majority of Germany right to kill Jews? NO!

You're exhausted because you spend too much time on the road. If you drove like me you'd be home 30 minutes sooner. But really, in closing this is not an attack aginst you personally, just all the attitudes like yours.

Lets be safe out there!

Here in Ontario, the left lane is for passing only and if a cop sees you just sitting there then they will give you a ticket...no joke.

Bill it's not me you're mad at. I don't drive like you described and I'm certainly not the problem. I drive like I said I drive if you would bother to read what I have been saying. I don't have people waiting behind me flashing lights and honking the horn. I don't camp in the left lane. And I don't hold up the left lane while I'm looking in the mirror. I am exhausted cause I'm tired of trying to tell you this.

So to make you happy I will admit the drivers are more skillful and better and more courteous abroad than at home. And? I really don't care to recognize the people overseas cause it has not much to do with the conversation but I'll go ahead and recognize them anyway. They're great!

I think you're just mad because I don't take it out on other drivers and try to force them to "see the light". I don't see that as an obligation as a "good driver" and I think it does more harm than good. I think you are mad at me because you say that I know better (I assume you mean the rules of the road) but I don't find it frustrating, shocking, and pathetic that others don't [know the rules of the road]. I think you're mad at me because I feel there is no proper way for one motorist to point out another motorists driving faults and you think there is a way to properly point this out.

You said "Slower traffic move right is not a choice regardless of what you think. A citizen has the right to point that out in the same way that First responders are required to help in an emergency. FIRST responders are required to help even if the person pushes them away and says, "It's against my religon". I don't believe that for one second because I don't equate citizen drivers to first responders. But I guess we have to agree to disagree. BTW, has anyone on the road ever tried to "show you the right way to drive?" How did you respond?

I think you probably misunderstood the way I used selfish. I meant not always thinking of yourself. There are 1,000 cars on the road, there will be 1,000 different ways to drive. Most of them will not match yours. Some will not even come close to matching yours. 95% of them will be acceptable under the law and in the end, it amounts to a hard time driving for you if you resist recognizing the diversity of the drivers. That's the definition of trouble. Maybe it's where I live but I find that ratcheting it down produces far better return results than fighting it.

Call it succumbing if you want but I have been driving long enough to know that your satisfaction on the road is totally based on whatever you get comfortable with. If you get where you are going in a timely and safe fashion in one piece without a lot of hassle and spending a lot of money and a great state of mind, you can live with that. If you couldn't live with that yesterday, a little bit of practice and a few changes tweaking in your habit to adjust to the situation, and you'll be fine. I always wondered "how does this person in front of me drive like this everyday and be happy with it? Doesn't he want more out of life than driving at a snail's place and being bullied around by every other driver on the road?" All the same time I found it to be a struggle, coping with bad drivers, people in the wrong lanes, other people making senseless mistakes, running stop signs, people driving too fast, people driving too slow, people not driving right for conditions..... Why isn't everyone else not frustrated daily like me, can't they see all this poor driving all over the place? Well they have become comfortable and now so have I. And at the same time I am happy. I get to drive 75 on the freeway, 95 on the open freeway, 120+ on the turnpike, I now follow cars longer on single-lane roads going under the speed limit without itching to pass, I pull in earlier in lines building up that merge from 2 lanes to 1, I get in one lane and stay in one lane when stuck in traffic instead of weaving and bobbing to try to get ahead, and I don't tailgate old ladies who choose to drive side by side in the left lane with an 18-wheeler for the next six miles.
