RT XLR8 cat, 1st impressions

Had this cat put on this morning. Had to replace the stock cat due to the innards rattling around like a tin can.

Build quality is 1st rate, Nice welds & smooth finish.

On my car with my mods, it has changed the sound. The exhaust sound is now more aggressive & a bit louder when your on the gas. Idle is a little more booming of a sound as well. It actually does sound good but I do not like it & pray it gets quieter with some miles.

I was not expecting the sound to change this drastically.

Positives are my car seems to run smoother & my RPM's don't seem to jump around as much. That may have been due to the messed up stock cat.
Pickup is a little quicker, but again my stock cat may have been robbing me.

IDK if others will or have experienced this. May be due to my mods & wouldn't be as drastic on more of a stock car.

I noticed that the sound changed too but I like it. All your other points are right on. Just feels like it opened up a bottle neck in my exhaust.

Grabbed the cat from under & shook it. All the stuff inside was rattling around inside it. It was not the heat shield on my car. Also had a rattle as I drove.

Do you think this Cat would pass emmitions in California? Also, you should post a video of the sound. This is kind of off topic but if your saying your RPM's are jumping when shifting, that would probably mean your clutch is going out...

It is not CARB so cali would be no.
Nothing to do with clutch. My RPM's just had a habit of jumping when letting off the gas. Not big just a few hundred up & down then it settled. It's not intake or IAC related, & no vacuum leaks.

Did your installer mention to you anything about the O2 sensor wire being a stretch to fit??

When I installed mine, I had to disconnect the O2 wire from the plastic clip that tucks it next to the body underneath running up to the engine compartment to have enough length for a connection. I got it to work; however, I was not to happy with the added struggle for the O2 wire connection.

For shits and giggles, if you're under the car sometime check it out. Just curious to see if anyone else's had the same problem.

Otherwise, the cat. has performed flawlessly. I have it connected to the CT b-pipe and stock mufflers for a rather nice growl during spirited runs.

My CAT is doing the same thing, took off the heat sheild and still have the rattling once in awile.. It seems like whatever has been rattling got hung up cuz I have not heard it lately. It does not bother me enough to spend $300 on fixing it right now. Maybee if i "bump" into some extra loot or fail inspection cuz of it I will change it other then that I am just gonna live w/da rattling 4 now... Did you mechanic use the stock O2 sensor..??
did your CAT start rattling soon after your header install?
Mine started rattling a month after the headers went on maybee 2 months the stock cat could not handle the extra air flow?
Did the stuff in your cat "the stuff that was rattling" come out after he took the old cat off, did he try to take the crap that was rattling out?
Did u use same 02 sensor?
how much did u get charge for install?

Thanks bro like I said I have the same problem but am too broke to deal right now!

Yes I used the stock 02 sensor. I did not replace it. I was but decided to wait.
My headers have been on for almost 3 years now. So no. The cat just went. IDK why. Car has 84K miles.
$60 to install. I didn't see the old cat. Wasn't really curious. It was crapped.
Couldn't have been hard to do since it was done in less then a hour.

Can someone please clearify this for me.. How doe the exhaust piping go???

headers meet at j pipe which is 2.5 inches or 2.25? I dunno I got the comptechs in the garage.

Then the cat is what?? the inlet and outlet are diff sizes but how does it go?

Someone shine some light on this for me please so I can determine whether to do the headers and cat at the same time or just stick with the headers for now.

The stock exhaust system is 2.25". I forget what the primaries are, but the collector (J-pipe) is 2.5" for the CT/XS headers. You dont need to do the cat at the same time, but doing the cat plus the rest of the exhaust will yield the most power.

sounds like a pretty good mod. In my CL-P, i have headers and can feel the back pressure inside the cabin when I come to stops. I was really considering getting some axlebacks, but spending $600 and getting 0 HP gains kills me...I think I may just pick the cat up for half price of axlebacks, and gain some power.

now i want my exhaust system to be sporty and louder than stock (aka not obnoxious), so this cat should give me what i want while adding more HP as well right?????? and also, no engine codes thrown due to O2?????? any noticable loss in MPG??????

thanks for info!!

yeah clp gets more gains, i just did alot of reading on it, and I need to upgrade my exhaust asap...

I'll probably be ordering the XLR8 cat since I have headers/CAI already. im pretty sure comtech headers have a 2.5" outlet, and this will meet the 2.5" cat.....but then ill get more back pressure when it meets b-pipe...ill have to eventually find a comptech cat back exhaust from someone...

IMO yes depending what you're trying to achieve with the mod. if u just want a sound change no. but for me its the only thing bottlenecking my exhaust system. so its worth it especially in the state of California.
