allmotor, if the weather holds i'll be at the track in a few hours. we'll see if the car feels any different.

If the damn thing is $6 more... its totally worth it. They claim dyno gains of 1.5% to 3% (at the wheels), so for our cars, that's 2.5whp to 5whp.. not bad I suppose!

well at a local performance shop they sell it to me for 5 bucks a quart. I believe I paid about 6 per quart from NAPA
I dont know if its just me but when i first started the car it actually felt a lot smoother and idle is a bit smoother too. As far as performance is concern cant really tell yet
Ive been using Royal Purple 5w-30 for about 25k miles and this is my first time running 5w-20, after i put a couple hundred miles ill give everyone an update.
I am really excited because this is my first time running 5w-20. So only time will tell if its any better then 5w-30

There's only a very slight viscosity difference (across all temps) between the 5W20 and 5W30. You 'might' have some blowby at high rpms with the 5W20... so check your crankcase vent

I heard that Royal purple was perfect for FI motors.
Well with the 5w-30 i was running i couldnt tell. the only reason why i switched to purple is because my friend and I tested this stuff out. a few years back my friend and I both had an accord v6. we had all the same mods but his car was always a little faster then mine. he was running the purple stuff and i was running on quaker. surprise suprise when i switched to RP the outcome of our races was about dead even

imo, 20 would be better in the winter, 30 in the summer.

I read that link and IMO, it's a good example of why I won't use Amsoil- they try to generate hype. I'm sure Amsoil is very good quality and I'm not going to argue with the pro-Amsoil crowd- just my opinion. Personally, I think Ford and Honda have quite a bit to lose if they recommend the wrong viscosity. I'll stick with a good quality 5W20 (even in hot AZ).

Are you refering to royal purple? well NAPA carries both Mobil 1 and Royal Purple if you plan on going synthetic.
i went 7000 miles with 5w-30 in about 5 months and had no problems. the only thing i worried about was the oil filter. I am using the honda filter and i think you are suppose to replace it every 3k miles??
Also if you plan on going with the Honda oil filter buy it from a honda dealership (its the same filter for the accord) you will save a couple bucks

1qts 0w to @4qts 5w in the summer
2qts 0w to @3qts 5w in the winter
You can tell the engine revs a bit quicker and gas mileage is better. I've been doing this since the 3rd oil change and I've had my 02 TLS for over 2 years now.
I only trust doing this with a premium synthetic.

a friend of mine told me royal purple isnt good for daily driven cars, ive used this before, and there was no noticable difference comparted to the regular dealer oil, ive alse used redline for a while, i would say redline is better, but who knows? i wonder what a dyno comparison of the two top notch oils would prove.

so what about the fact that amsoil makes 5w-20 as well as 5w-30?
how would the article benefit them?

I started out trying to find the best synthetic using lab tests,, I didn't even know about Amsoil,,( I still can't find anything better (Mobil1 is close) and the plus side Amsoil is the only manufacture that tell you NOT to change your oil every 3-5 k miles,,, I have a continue test going on my car,, I change every 10k, filter every 5k,,, so far buy lab analysis, the results have said not to change it even at 10k. Simplistic results are TBN number 7.xx,, most brand new petro oil is around 8.xx. No matter what part of the country your in 0w30 or 5w30 will work fine. Another plus is Amsoil will warranty your engine if their oil has failed.
More fun reading,,,,,
Yes all pro Amsoil but note all the lab results have not been challenged/disputed by Mobil
http://www.desertsundirectsales.com/...vearticles.htm
And yes I pay Amsoil $ 20 a year so I can buy it wholesale,,, Anybody can do this,,,

do you use 5w-20 or 5w-30?
so with amsoil you change every 10k miles and filter every 5k miles. how much more oil do you put in after you change out the filter?

Take a look at that link fender4 posted above and you'll see articles like "Increase Your Income!!" and "Home Businesses are Booming!"- trying to get more individuals to sell it, similar to Amway tactics. They bash other companies with quasi-scientific articles which then gets more people talking about them. They bash K&N filters and Harley-Davidson’s oil at that link above- both articles designed to generate hype. Their marketing practices seem far from professional but again, I'm sure their products are very good quality

"Red Line recommends oil changes for engines that are in good condition and do not see frequent starts without warm-ups or short-trips at between 10,000 and 18,000 miles for gasoline engines, 10,000 and 12,000 miles for diesel engines, or every 12 months, whichever is shorter."

the fact that my oil cap ('01 cl-s) says 5w-30, and danny telling me the the '02 and '03's say 5w-20, falls right in line with what the article states.
dunno if it's true or just hype, but it is a coincidence.

the hype part is just my opinion- I may be completely wrong. My gripe with them is their marketing tactics, not the quality of their oil. I just don't see Honda and Ford recommending an oil that will end up causing pre-mature engine wear since there'd be a huge class-action lawsuit (who knows though...). My car will be long gone before that would ever happen though. I'm using 5W20 to get the benefits of a thinner oil (minuscule increases in performance and MPG) since I think the brand I use offers plenty of protection.
russianDude: there are different qualities of base stocks used in creating synthetic oils. That's one reason why Mobil 1, Syntec, et al cost about half the price of Red Line, Amsoil, etc.

regardless, I think Amsoil is over rated..... they bash on Mobil 1, and claim they are superior. Even if Amsoil is a little better than Mobil 1, I am sure the difference is very small.... like Amsoil pours at -55F and Mobil at -50... do you really care about that? Is it worth paying so much extra $$$? Another thing I hate about Amsoil is that they keep bashing on Mobil 1.... its just unprofessional.... just my oppinion....
the bigest benefit for your engine is a good filter that you change often....... i'd say all well known brand synthetic oil are pretty much the same ( with some settle differences which are really small for an average user ).
If you do some crazzy ass stuff like racing and etc, then you might want to look into Red Line or other stuff....
Don't worry about oil so much, get yourself high quality filter like Mobil 1, Puralator, or Amsoil filter
#31
ah, somebody who agrees with me about Amsoil
I can buy Red Line oils at several shops locally but I buy it online since it's cheaper. Pep Boys near me sells Red Line products- at least I've seen their Water Wetter and Fuel injector cleaner there. They probably don't stock their oil since they feel they wouldn't sell much- it's not cheap.
I agree these oils may be overkill for the type of driving our cars see but I don't mind the extra cost since I do the oil change myself.

for this thread I recommend 5w20 and change it every 3 k...
Please post any "quasi-scientific articles" tinman???,,,, also mobil1 ads quote that they are the best ,,, but using "real" science they are not,,,, they are marketed for the individule salesman but it seems to work,,, they just became the sixth largest oil company,, and this is without having any gas stations on the corner...
again if your comfort zone is 3k changes so be it,,, I mixed and changed every 3k for 4 years. Sorry if amsoil marketing "bugs" ya but remember they are a profit making company,,, just like like dare I say Mobil,,,

relax- I said Amsoil is a good quality oil, and I don't think my comments were the first time you've heard somebody gripe about their marketing tactics...
but, how about the article that prompted my original comment: where's the scientific proof that using 5W20 will cause a late-model Honda or Ford engine to wear out sooner? And that the only reason Honda and Ford are suggesting to use it is for their own profit?
I don't use Mobil 1 and my change interval is not 3k I use Red Line and I change around 10k

marketed this way,,, dif between amway,, they use a high dallor +500 to become a salesman,, this is then split between the pyramid,, makes for selling "salemans" and not the product,, used to be this way,,,

Sounds like you all need more choices. :P
Anyway, if I remember correctly, a resident expert on lubrications on the TLS Forum rated Redline the best over all, but that a new one has come out and taken over the top spot.
Of course you need to note that as improvements are made, so do the rankings.

Yes / very good for $20/qt/ and they recommend changes every 7500 milles. There is better at $30/qt,,, ???? again yes these examples are used for racing engines that are ussally rebuilt every 500 miles or so, run at 7-10k rpms and NOT used as daily drivers,,, which they need to be for true comparisons by lab analysis,,, again at $20/qt,,

It's $7.00 or less that way. Of course you need to add shipping and tax.

Sorry to open up dead threads. Do not use the 5w-20 oils. They are way too thin to properly protect your engine even with Amsoil or Redline. 5w-30 or 0w30. Amsoil's 0w30 flows at 112 below 0 so flow isn't a problem.
