I believe they cut in around 7300 to prevent engine damage. I had this happen couple times when I shifted to late or forgot to shift. not a good feeling.

I know what you mean about forgetting to shift. That engine just keeps pulling and pulling in 2nd gear. Without the rev limiter, I'm sure many people would kill their engines by accident.
