Next E-Class Unmasked

High style and advanced technology look set to propel the latest Mercedes E-Class right to the top of the executive sector when it is unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show... in 2002
This shot reveals that the design which has won the S-Class so much praise is to be applied to the new machine. It provides even more cabin space than the existing model, thanks to an extended wheelbase and re-packaged interior. Codenamed W211, the new car will initially be powered by the current engine line-up. However, a new range of direct injection petrol powerplants is being developed, as is a 400bhp supercharged 5.5-litre V8. It is hoped this engine will be mated to a new six-speed automatic edition of Mercedes' automatic gearbox.

Air suspension will offer supreme ride comfort and body control, while flagship AMG-tuned models will make use of Mercedes' semi-active hydraulic suspension system. In addition, cutting-edge brake technology, called Sensortronic and developed by Bosch, spells an end for hydraulic systems. Instead, it will use electric signals to control the calipers. This lets each brake work independently, and can also stop the E-Class rolling backwards on hills or losing braking response in wet conditions.

The equipment list is also set to include cruise control, keyless ignition and a revised edition of Mercedes' COMAND entertainment system.

I am guestimating that pricing will be similar if not lower to current levels. Again, this economy is not an environment that welcomes expensive cars or aggresive increases in pricing. Merc is doing the right thing lately and we have seen it by the pricing of the new C Class. That car is really a good value especially in 240C trim. I can only assume that Merc will follow the same strategy with the E Class.

Anybody know what gizmo(s) might be found in those thin rectangular front bumper sections? The circular spots seem to echo the side mirrors?

The ones on the bumpers are probably parking distance sensors. The ones on the mirrors are turn signals and lights for entry /egress.

Yowzers! sexy car..any pics of the rear?? or side?

Thats not much of a crumple zone in the front bumper hence the thousands for repair in a low speed crash test? {point made a while back}

**Another interesting crash test report from Europe..front impact test scores are *low*
for the current E class :toonosurprise:
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/gavriil...ew/eclass.html

in fact front impact tests are low for all models: A, C, & E
but strong results show in the side collisions

Results are terrible for the C class.
Now from what I can make of this, what the fudge did Mercedes mean by their comment of the C class result from Dateline? Something along the lines of

"Mercedes wrote a letter back to DATELINE saying that the passengers are more important then the body and that if they increased the strength of the bumper it would reduce safety for the occupants." {summarized by Shawn S}

i.e. increase strength of the C class bumper and the results would be even worse on the dummys?

Duno about you guys, but I'm staying away from a C class: costly and unsafe. As for the E class, we'll see if they've made improvements in future tests

BTW, heres the link to the Dateline Test again:

Hum...a 6 speed auto...the first I've seen/heard. Wasn't 5 speed autos a new thing just a couple years ago? Wonder when they'll come out with a 7 speed auto...

Rumor has it that those are not only parking sensors. But they are tied into the cruise control as well. the car will keep it's distance automatically. If I am not mistaken Lexus is offering this on the Ultra-Luxury package of the new LS430.

Yeah, here it is. Although maybe those buttons on the new E are parking sensors only.

Damn. Is it me, or do the lights look more like those found on the Lexus GS? I like the cool little projectors inside the bubbles. I wish Lexus had done it that way. Looks like AMG version will give the M5 a run for its money.

Where do you think Lexus got the idea for bubble lights from? Lexus just stole the idea and made it better.

Bout time Mercedes one-upped them.

SOOO #&^%$#^%$#&%$ TRUE!!!!!!
It looks like it was made for the europian license plate only, actally it makes the euro license plate itself look good.

When I get that car in 3.5 years, I dont care I am taking the license plate off.

Screw the law.

Soopa: I'm with you...okay, I did change my desktop to this from the SEMA CL.

I'm not saying I'm begging God for them to do the same to the CLK (which I am BTW) or that I'd sell (or barter) my twin brother for this car (which I would...in a sec) but this is ONE BEAUTIFUL piece of art! Can you imagine what the E55 version of this thing will look like? Sheesh!

OMIGOD!!!!

thanks. Actually the Lexus already had those lights on the current Gs when it was on sale in japan the same time the MB was on sale everywhere else. The U.S. market waited a year for the Gs.
When I got my car it came down to 3: Gs4, MB 430 sport, BMW_540 Sport...in the end the $9G saving over the BMW was the clincher...plus the Lexus had a better reliability record.
I love the CL S-type. I got my friend to get a silver one. We race once in a while, but he knows better. We usually play Tag on the freeway and scare the shit out of people.
If you are in H-town look for a dK Green GS4.
