Response to SC TL regarding the term JAP
Response to SC TL regarding the term JAP
Sorry I know this is off topic, but its not fair to have a post quoting and criticizing my words without the chance to reply (other topic locked)... so here goes.
First of all, I wasn't the one that used the term. Second of all, my posts were in reference to a post that used the term "Jap" in regard to a PRODUCT from Japan, not a nationality. No one was calling any PERSON a Jap?? Or did you see something I didn't?
I think when we as people are being sensitive about words, the most important thing to do is take a look at the word in context. If the context isn't implying anything malicious you can probably assume the term was not ment to be taken in a racist/hurtful way.
No one used the term "Jap" to refer to a person or people. Remember what is written and what is spoken are two completly different things. Someone going around verbally saying "jap this jap that" should be taken differently that someone typing "jap" on a online forum. People are lazy when they type and usually use the most abreviated version of the word they can without losing the intended meaning... need I give you examples?
I would also like to inform you that maybe the fact that I didn't know Jap was an offensive term is a GOOD THING? That would indicate I don't use it in an offensive mannor. I haven't even seen many people (other than Japanese or people of other Asian Descent) fess up to knowing it would be considerd offensive either... that should be a considered a good thing too! But, now that you and a few others have cried about it you are letting the term live on in a negative way... good work, I hope you and your ancestors are proud!
FINALLY, I would like to ask what oppression you have been through as a RACE to even DESERVE to be sensitive about a term that was used for a BREIF period in time. I am not a HISTORIAN by any means so please fill me in if I am missing something, but as far as I know the only opression that Japanese people faced in the united states in the last 100 years or so was during the whole Pearl Harbor/WWII period. And guess what JAPAN WAS AS MUCH THE AGRESSOR AS ANYONE ELSE! Do you expect people in America to call you nice things after what happend during that period? I don't think any BULLY deserves the right to be sensitive. Im sorry if my country opressed Japanese Americans during this time but what did you really expect?
There are plenty of people/races out there that I believe do have the right to be sensitive about terms that have historicly malicious meanings but I don't think the Japanese NOR Americans fit into this category. We (Japan and US) historicly have been the agressors and therefor forfeit the right cry because someone used a term we didn't like.
I would just like to add, that I have always been fond of the Japanese culture... food, women, language, technology... everything! I think it is awesome country and will definitely be going there to visit once I can afford it. In addition, I don't know anyone that has ever spoken poorly about the Japanese at all -- most everyone I know admires them! I guess that is why I am so outspoken about this because I honestly don't see anyone trying to make Japanese americans feel unwelcome.. so why the sensitivity?

Some people are too sensitive.

So you know people that use the word to describe Japanese people, but since they don't mean anything by it, you think its okay to use the term? What kind of ignorant shit is that? Just because you have no sense of history of the use of the term, just because its not offensive to you, and just because
you only mean it as an abbreviation means I should just shut up and take you calling me a Jap?
