Resonator Removal

Has anyone removed their resonators? Is it legal in cali?

I removed the 1 closet to the exhaust today and what a difference. RPM's definatly move quicker. Has a lot more of an aggresive growl. I like in my opinion. Gonna do some headers soon, so We'l see the results

Most new people ask about the resonator below the airbox. I'm assuming that would be it. I've been wrong before though.

Im talking about the airbox because it seems easy to remove.
I dont know if removing the exhaust resonator would be easy or legal in cali. if anyone knows tell me. plus some people dont like the sound of it. if anyone has a clip with everything stock w/o exhaust resonator, i could take a listen

You don't need to remove the bumper for that. Just the underside splash panel & maybe the wheel.
It's been done many times so search around for the posts. 1st thing I did was take mine out. Been that way for over a year now.

Louder, You hear the intake. It's not excessive or anything. Sounds fine. It's really not a big deal. You get more sound from mufflers or headers.

green machine tried to tell you this already. you should at least read your own threads. PS this topic has been covered MANY times before so next time just try searching a key word or two. for instance....you could have just searched "resonator" and found a ton of results. ok heres the DIY

we are talking about removing the intake resonator not the exhaust. it may be illegal in your state, but it is not illegal to remove the intake since you remove it when you install a CAI

reviving this tread because i have more questions:
can i do it with out taking the wheel out and the bumper off? i can i just jack it, turn the wheel and take off the wheel cover?
do i need to reset the ECU or w/e?

haven' ttried it with the wheel on, but if you're going to put the effor into jacking up your car, why not take that xtra step and take the wheel off? you'll have so much more room to work with.

just based on that off the top of my head, imma have to say no. you shoudl ttake the wheel off, or you'll have virtually no working space.


and the ecu is supposed to re-set itself after a few days. someone has told me that it'd be a good idea to disconnect the battery if you want to ensure it re-sets a.s.a.p.


but you're just removing the resonator, it's not going to do a whole lot for you to the point that you shoudl be worrying about the ecu.

WHAT!!! the engine doesnt gain any horse power nor do the RPM's go up any faster when you remove it. its a sounds deadner only. does nothing for power or rev speed.

I'd be amazed if you DIDN'T pick up some HP increase from removing the resonator.. When you remove restriction from the intake, you gain HP... K&N drop in and removing the resonator will increase HP, not as much as the CT icebox, but pretty darn close...

I didnt take the wheel off. I jacked it up, pulled down the splash guard,removed the two bolts, and pulled the resonator out. Didnt take very long at all.

I took mine out today. I took the rubber piece and reversed it. I pulled it out and put it back in from the bottem so no empty hole to engine bay. Right down to the empty hole.

what do you mean by this?

i cant take my wheel off because i dont have the tools. thats the only reason.

Alright, finally had time to take some pictures. Damn rain... anyways, this is what I was taking about with the rubber piece and flipping it. IMO, I think that this will help pull air from the bottem rather then the small gap between the airbox and frame/ resonator area. I'd rather have it pull straight from the empty area.

oo put the rubber gasket on the inside? does that really help or improve over having it installed at all?
i was also thinking of just leaving the gasket and the U tube still installed and just take the resonator out. yes or no?

so i finally got it out. i left the U tube in there. do you guys think i should take it off or leave it? does it make a difference?
there is def a woosh sound when i turn off the engine. much louder than before, but thats about the only sound difference. i was surprised about that, i was expect it to be a hum or whistle. i was also surprised and kinda mad that all a resonator is a plastic box. lol, yah i know it might sound stupid. mine had sand, a stick and leaves inside.

for some reason, my gasket was already flipped like the last pic. maybe its like that stock. anyways, i also did a complete drain and refill of coolant. while i was inder my car, i noticed the b-pipe ( connected to the headers), i think its what it is called. was crushed. looks like someone missed the jack point. it was bent in about an 1/2 inch. i know that this must not be good for performance, so this makes me want the XS headers even more now.
