Resonator Placement

I just bought a 4"round 14" long Magnaflow muffler and im planning on replacing my stock mid-muffler with it. I have a question on the placement of the resonator that im putting in, I dont wanna seem like a idiot, but does the placement of the resonator effect the sound? What im trying to say is lets say I were to cut out the stock mid-muffler and replace it with a straight pipe and put the new magnaflow resonator up further closer to the cat, would it make any difference over just putting it in the exact place of the stock mid-muffler? Im no expert but it seems like putting it further up would leave more continuous wide open straight pipe and increase the sound a little bit. So instead of going Cat-----------mid-muffler------b-pipe, it would go cat---mid muffler-------------------b-pipe

Again dont mean to sound dumb, just wanna find this out before I install the new resonator

i dont think anyone knows the answer to this unless your a sound engineer or something. certainly no one has put a resonator on their car and then moved it to another location. waste of time, money and work.

The placement of the resonator could change the tone depending on placement.

Think of it like this, if the resonator was in the middle (closer to the front), and you had piping all the way back with or without mufflers, it's very possible the exhaust note will be noticeably louder.

The sound waves from the exhaust would have to travel a longer distance in turn making the sound waves a lot larger. By the time the sound waves get to the end of the exhaust, the dB level could be very loud. Having a resonator at the end of the exhaust near the y-split restricts the sound waves from getting any larger than they have too.

EDIT: If I'm wrong on anything feel free to jump in.

Thats exactly wut I was thinking, the more continuous straight pipe you have from the resonator to the muffler, the louder it will be. So cutting out the stock mid-muffler, replacing it with straight pipe and putting a new mid-muffler closer to the cat would leave you with an extra like 2-3 feet of continuous piping. And like you said, the extra length of continuous straight pipe will allow the sound waves to increase, making it louder.

Well im gonna try it, Im gonna do it on wednesday and i'll let you guys know how it sounds. The only problem I forsee is there not being anywhere to tuck the new resonator and it will hang too low.

^^the aftermarket resonator I had was around the size you bought. The place I took it too did a very good job of tucking it in so it wasn't noticeable.

^^^But where did you put yours? If you put it where the stock mid-muffler was then it would tuck pretty well cuz theres a place to put it. But i dont think theres anywhere else to tuck it, Im gonna take my car to my old highschool autoshop and put it on the lift and find the perfect location for it.

Im also thinking it might be possible to use some downward bent piping to attach the new resonator to the exhaust pipe. Heres wut I mean...

Im just not sure if I have enough room to tuck it up like that

The resonator was put exactly where the old one was, just a little pushed back to make it fit.

i just gotta see if they can tuck it up somewhere closer to the cat, the only real place to tuck it up out of the way is where the stock mid-muffler is. But im so excited about tomorrow, i cant wait

Even though I know it doesnt matter because no ones ever gonna see it, I spent the last hour polishing it. Heres what it looks like now, this crappy camera does the shine no justice.

*UPDATE*

I just got back home from getting it put in and WOW. It sounds perfect, just the right tone and just the right loudness. It sounds more aggressive and its definitley a louder than stock. This thing is drone city between 2k to 3.5k rpm in higer gears, it might be too much for some people but I luv it. I got the idea from the 3rd Gen TL guys, they do the same thing. They replace their mid-muffler with a straight pipe and replace their resonator thets by the cat with a magnaflow of dynomax mid-muffler.

Heres a few pics...

It tucked up really nice behind the cat, alot of guys had problems with putting in a new mid-muffler where the stock location is when their car is dropped. But this thing tucked up beautifully and hangs at the exact same level as the cat so even if your dropped its unlikely that it will scrape

I cant find my camcorder so no videos yet, but i promise to get a video up.

Looks good.

I have the same resonator but a couple inches further away from the cat. Sounds great with my Magnaflow mufflers.

Yea you can, but the sound isnt gonna be as aggressive or as loud. Remember, the more straight pipe there is after the resonator, the louder it will be

i dont think i would like it if it was droning on the freeway, but if you like it then
i guess i would put it at the OEM location.

The resonator costed $60 off amazon and installation was $100, but the install was a bit pricy because they had to cut the stock resonator, replace it with straight pipe, cut pipe near the cat and weld the resonator there. If it was just a cut and weld in the stock location it would have been $50 for install.

It does drone but only between 2k-3k rpm, I really wanna make a few vids for you guys but I cant find my camcorder. I have to see if anyone I know has one I can barrow.

I think if I were to put a set of magnaflow 14850 mufflers it would sound amazing with the resonator in the new location.

I believe i actually have those mufflers on my old exhaust that is just chillin in my garage, i even had the stock tips put on them, i believe they are 2 1/4 in, also had the mufflers sprayed black to keep the stock look on them, but it has no resonator on the system, if you want it you can come get it, but i suggest bringing a truck, or some redonkulous pb blaster or torch to break down the sections. Because no matter what i tried i could not get the bolt off for the life in me.
