Question Replacing Fuel Pump...Should I replace the Filter too?

I think the fuel pump is slowly dying. A few days ago I tried starting the car up after coming home and it just wouldn't start. Sounded like it wanted to, but then it would die immediately. Seemed like a fuel delivery problem or the ecu was preventing the car from starting for some weird reason. I had to wait ~10 minutes before it cranked back up, but it seems to be doing okay lately.

I've replaced the main relay a <1year ago, but it still has this symptom at times. I can't hear the pump wind up anymore either before the car cranks up which I used to be able to hear. This leads me to think of the pump as the culprit.

But the question is should I replace the fuel filter while I'm at it since the pump & filter are both located in the tank?

Not sure myself really since I've heard these are "lifetime" filters.

Thanks!

If you use the Denso 9500161 Pump & Strainer Set ($80.79) from rockauto it gives you the filter with the kit versus the OEM 17040-S3M-A00 PUMP SET, FUEL ($251.18)

If you can get to the filter at the same time, may as well change it.

You could try adding solder to the solder points on the main relay, though I would think it wouldn't be having problems just being a year old.

Yes, I bought the Denso Kit from Amazon with the strainer and I think it was a bit cheaper than Rockauto. ~$68.

I also bought the Beck Arnley fuel filter also and the Fuel Tank Seal. I think I'm set!

Yeah, I went ahead and bought the filter anyways and will replace it along with the pump since they're both in the same location.

Check your ground cable that goes from battery to trans. Gave my dad's CL starting trouble for a little bit.

Why would you not change the filter if you are changing the pump?

Any preventive maintenance that can be done with little to no additional effort will pay dividends in the long run.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Although I've looked at that cable before, I didn't find anything out of the ordinary.

You're right. I changed the filter along with the pump on the weekend. Works great now! Faster/stronger startup. Only reason why I was asking was because the filters on our cars are considered "lifetime" filters and don't need to be changed. I couldn't find it locally unless it was over priced. I ordered mine online.

Thanks everyone! Now onto engine mounts!

Glad you got the car working again.

When it comes to filters there's no such thing as lifetime. Only flow rate or flow efficiency.

Once the filter gets clogged up then pump will burn out bc it's liquid cooled or the pump will loose pressure from partially clogged filter. Either way it comes back to failing pump. Whether it's actual or perceived. Once pump is out replace everything.
