Replacing brakes - advice

Hello! I'm going to replacing my brakes for the first time, and was hoping for some advice.

I've done brakes disc before on an old crappy car (Any Geo Storms in the house? No?) so I shouldn't have too much trouble. I found a good writeup of the front brakes here: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143104 . Are there going to be any surprises for me with the rear brakes? I havent done rears before, since my crappy car had drum brakes in back.

Next, any thing I can do to help prolong my brakes so they dont start wearing grooves into the rotors after 6 months? That's one reason I'm not going back to the dealer to have them done. $100 an hour for 4 hours only to have them start squealing in 6 months. They mentioned that some springs (anti-rattle springs maybe?) were stuck when they last "fixed" my brakes, so I assumed the problem was gone and I wouldn't have problems for a long time. Nope

I'm also having trouble deciding what pads/rotors to buy and wear to buy them, but I should be able to figure that out. I'm already thinking Brembo rotors should be good enough, and maybe the Satisfied Pro pads, if I can find them all at one store for a good price. As long as the car stops eventually, I'm happy.

1. I wouldn't go with brembo rotors. I have them and the center part is a nasty lookin red-orange after less than a year. Get those sweet rotora slotted rotors from excelerate instead. They have painted centers.

2. I heard satisfied pro pads are good, but I haven't tested them personally because they were sold out when I was replacing mine. I want to try out a set of those next.

3. Theres nothing specific to do about the grooves issue as you described. I haven't even heard of it happening before. As for squeaking, just use a liberal amount of an anti-squeal compound from pepboys or autozone on everything and just wipe off excess.

4. You may need an impact screw driver to take out the bolts holding the rotor. Or you can drill them out.

Can't offer you any advice about the rears though, I have yet to undertake that challenge.

I have the slotted Rotora rotors, and will vouch for the quality...bought the car with them on already 17k miles ago and they are still smooth.

Dont forget to bed the brakes in properly. I didnt do it till my friend told me (anyone know SodaLuvr? haha) and it made a great difference in braking. It also might help with the grooves since technically the brakes would rub against the brake pad material on your rotors instead of the the rotors itself.

If thats the worst thing about the Brembos, I may be okay with that. But I'll check out other kinds. I'm just not looking to spend $400 on rotors if I can help it.

I've read a lot on here about the Rotora rotors, but thats one thing I'm having a problem with in regards to shopping online - no one seems to have them so I can price them out. A product search on excelerateperformance.com for "rotora" gives 0 results

Of course, as soon as I post I find that they sell them direct from Rotora.com, and a bit of Googling leads to even better prices. They're cheaper than I would have expected! All of the good stores must have been hiding last night. Yeah. Now I need to find a store that gets decent ratings... Why isnt there a Newegg for auto parts?

1. My Brembos did that too.

2. Satisfied Pros work fine.

The web store is still being populated but we do have pricing in this link:

It's best to PM me with your year and model Acura, zip code, and what you're looking for and we will get you a quote.

It depends on how you're going to use them. The Satisfied Pros are good overall. For normal street use, the Brembos are just fine (I've got about 10K on mine with no issues.). If you're going to drive more aggressivily a lot, then maybe the Roturas could be a better choice. Personally I wouldn't spend the extra money because of the looks of the hubs.

Almost forgot. I got both from Tire Rack. I found a couple places a little cheaper, but not enough to go there. The biggest price difference was about $15 for the whole thing - all 4 corners.

My rear Rotoras lasted 80k miles before they needed replaced. Fronts lasted 45k.

Where are you located?

Huh, good thing I didnt find a way to actually buy the rotors on the website I was looking at. Maybe that's super secret code for "Out of stock".

I'm actually thinking about starting on the rears, and doing the fronts when it gets warmer out (I'm in Milwaukee-ish, WI). My rears need to be changed like immediately. Since there doesn't seem to be any write ups about the rears, I'll take pictures and you can all yell at me about my brakes for eternity. The fronts dont look too shabby, but they probably need some help.

I'm also still torn between the Rotoras and the Brembos. Dang. I dont think I'm very aggresive on my brakes, but like I said, this will be my second brake job - even for the rears - in 60k. This time around the rears wore way faster than the fronts. Maybe I stop too fast when driving backwards? I dont remember what was bad last time, but they said they resurfaced all the rotors. For all I know they ate lunch for 4 hours, uh, somehow. I only drive maybe 20 miles to and from work, and it's a lot of freeway and highway. And, I dont drive like Batman.

I dont have permission to PM. Huh. I'm too cool for PMs, I guess.

Excelerate, if you happen to read this thread again, and you can PM me, how much for a 2001 CL shipped to 53214? Non S, if it matters. (I guess I'm too cool for Type S as well ) I'd like a quote for all 4 slotted Rotora rotors, and a quote for just the rears, please.

I still haven't decided on rotors, but I'm leaning away from the Rotoras. They're a little pricey, especially since I dont drive like Batman, and it doesnt help that I can find free shipping for everything except Rotoras. I'm also leaning away from slotted rotors in general, since I'd rather not have my pads eaten up faster than they already are. It's hard though, because Rotoras are so nice - I want them, but I dont.

On a side note, has anyone tried Centric rotors? They're super cheap, but you can get them with e-coating, which is nice. But they say they try super hard to be as close to OE as possible, so I'm guessing they're pretty crummy, like OE.

I have a couple set of ROTORA blanks in stock for the front. $110 for the pair plus shipping.

I did my own brakes a couple of months ago and bled the fluid. it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be, except for the infamous rusty screws.
get yourself a impact screwdriver from sears for $25. it is 100% worth the money to save the time and hassle of trying to get those screws off. looks like this http://autorepair.about.com/library/...bl255a-lib.htm

i bought my pads and rotors from these guys:
http://www.zeckhausenracing.com/
i got the Axxis Deluxe pads and Centric rotors. Centric is the same company that makes StopTech, but they arent drilled or slotted. These pads and rotors are not that agressive, but you shouldn't be using agressive pads if you aren't braking agressively. If you don't drive hard enough, the material from aggressive pads deposits onto your rotors and can cause signs of "warping" like shakey steering wheel. that is why u bed the brakes. keep the transfer of pad material smooth and even along the rotors.
anti squeal goop on all the back of all the parts will stop any squealing.

i like the centric and axxis pad combo. no problems and they stop just as well as my old slotted drilled rotors and axxis ultimate combo that got warped. they're cheap too!
