remote starters

also i know it doesnt work on manuel trannys, but i was wondering how remote start works?

i mean you start the car from a ways away, then you reach the car. the car is already started so what do you just put the keys into the ignition? and restart the car? how does this work?

it works on manuals... there are some systems out now that will check to make sure your car is in neutral before starting.

when you get in the car you've still got to put the keys in and turn them. it doesn't try to ignite again since it's already lit.

you put the keys in and turn, but not all the way. 2 clicks instead of 3.

2 clicks is all you need. If you purchase a DEI remote Start, like the Viper 550 or the Clifford comp, it is designed to not allow you to engage the starter when the car is already running.

My father has a cheaper remote start and if you turn the key all the way over while the car is running from remote start, you will hear grinding and noises from the starter, not good----

But yeah, when you get in, don't hit the brake until you get the key turned, usually the break cuts the engine so that the car can't be put into gear w/o the key-

I use my remote start alot, it is great!

basically all a remote start does is send signal through the wires under the dashboard to the starter , ignition , second ignitioin, accessory( what powers the heat) to start the car and keep it running until you get in the car and put the key in and hit the brake, the brake shuts down the remote start system but it doesnt matter cause your key is already in the ignition.

and it can be done on any manuel car with any system but you just have to do a clutch bypass so the car thinks the clutch is pressed down.

I had the Viper 790 XV like Katana for about 7 months. It had very good range, and "when" the remote pager/confirmation worked, it was awesome..... however, I went through TWO LCD pagers in that 8 month period. The first replacement was caused because the pager/remote stopped beeping (even though I programmed it to beep and page instead of just vibrate) and confirming commands, and the second replacement was because the remote not confirming commands, and completely failing to lock/unlock/remote start..... That pissed me off.

Because of my bad experience with the 790XV, I had it replaced with the Viper 550. I comes with two non-lcd remotes. I like the alarm, however, the range is not as good as the 790XV. I just couldn't see myself purchasing a $100 replacement remote atleast every year if I had stayed with the 790.

With my 790XV, when working properly, I could have my car parked almost within eyeshot and have it remote start more than 2 blocks away. With my 550, I can only get at most a block given my surroundings (big buildings, concrete walls, etc.).

Circuit City sells the Viper brand of DEI products, and Best Buy sells the Clifford. Smaller shops who are authorized dealers may sell either or both brands, but I'm not sure.

And 962.5tl is right, any remote start can be set up on a manual car. Unfortunately, some shops will not install it because (it is against the law in some states and) if the alarm can't recognize the car is in gear = accident-

Oh, I never abused my remote for the 790XV!! I had only dropped one of the pagers once, and exposed the pagers to very little moisture. Katana, how long have you had your remote, any problems yet?

actually you may ahve done nothing, the 790 had some problems with some features( antenna pulling out. ect.) now the new 791 those problems have apparently been worked out. i install them and i dont think my the shop i work at has had any problems with them coming back with the problems that you had.

i might suggest gettin the 791 its the same as the 790 but i think it has 8 outputs to power different things and it has a nicer blue remote ( still 2 way)

huh, I'll have to look into that...
I really liked the range on the 790, but the replacement remotes kept bothering me-

Thanks for the advice, I didn't know they have a 791-
