Regarding the MT 1-yr test verdict on the CLS...

they mentioned in the 'What's New, Changed, Different' area the following: "...and the driver's airbag is now a dual-stage, dual-threshold device."

what's dual-threshold mean??? how is it different from dual-stage??

thx

I think dual stage means that it can vary between full "blowup" or less than full "blowup".

And I think dual threshold means it will can decide to activate or not depending on vehicle speed...such as when you are driving slow and rear end someone, not likely causing injury (if your seatbelt is on), and therefore not necessary for the airbags to go off.

that's my guess anyway.

The Air Bags can inflate at different rates, depending on the severity of the impact. Big hit = fast deployment, less severe and they will deploy slower. This is in the owner's manual. Keep in mind these two stages (thresholds?) are fractions of a second from each other, but your face can tell the difference...

perhaps dual-threshold means the amount of air the stays in the airbag when yer head hits it??

ok, dual stage inflates the bag at different rates, right??? well how bout the amount of impact the bag can take from yer head hitting it?? if it's a high-impact hit, wouldn't u think there'd b more compressed air in the bag to accept a harder hit than a low-impact hit?? conversely, if it's a lower-impact hit where the head isn't traveling at a higher rate of speed, u wouldn't want so much air that yer head will "spring" off the bag, right?? maybe that's what dual-threshold means
