Red SRS light stays on . . .

Noticed the red SRS light on the dash staying on today at the same time I noticed the battery getting weak, (slow cranking). Replaced the battery tonight and the SRS light still stays on. Coincidence that both happened at the same time, or is there a reset procedure for the SRS light? Checked and nothing is touching the seats that might trip a sensor. Any suggestions and/or bright ideas.
Thanx.
Dan

Crap.

My girlfriends Honda Civic had the same problem... battery went dead and the SRS light came on, would NOT go back off.

If your car is under warranty, you're fine. Her Civic was not and she was quoted $85 to shut the light off by 3 local dealers. If the light came back on she would need to replace the SRS sensor and it was $450.

No thanks. If you want to fix it yourself in 30 seconds, here is how:

1- look underneath dash, near fusebox, for a 2-wire yellow plug, disconnect it and pull it down so you can work with it.

2- turn ignition OFF

3- jumper the 2 wires together (cut paperclip in half and straighten, insert one end of both halves into back end of plug where each wire goes in, touch them together and hold)

4- turn ignition ON (SRS light will turn on for 6 seconds, then turn off)

5- within 4 seconds of SRS light turning off, unjumper the 2 wires (SRS light will turn back ON)

6- within 4 seconds of SRS light turning on, jumper the 2 wires (SRS light will turn back OFF)

7- within 4 seconds of SRS light turning off, unjumper the 2 wires (SRS light will blink ON and OFF, indicating SRS function is reset)

See ya SRS light...

When you're done don't forget to plug the connector back in.

SRS & ABS sensors are two different animals. SRS=airbags & ABS=antilock brakes.

You can reset the light, you may not need the sensor - this is what the Honda computer does to reset it, just without the paperclips - it does it digitally.

If you reset it a couple times and the SRS light keeps coming back on, you probably need a new one.

This method as described above works quite well, and there is not enough power running through that connector to fry anything, even if you shroted it out or something...

This has been a common problem on Hondas/Acuras since 1996... it's posted on TONS of sites and the fix is always the same - just as stated above...

THANK YOU jriga!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Worked like a charm As long as it does not reappear I will assume it was caused by the low voltage from the bad battery and not a defective airbag sensor. Thanks again

Does this work in AV6 too ? I have a friend with a SRS light on.

HAHA!!! Success! Sweet - glad you were able to save yourself the cash...

As for working on the other ride - I *assume* it will.

I looked at some other forums and there are TONS of people with an AV6 that used this method to reset the light... so YES - it appears it will work.

Found some on this forum:

I know its an old thread, but wanted to bump it... my battery was really weak yesterday morning, SRS light came on later in the afternoon. Called local Acura dealer... they wanted $99 for a "diagnosis" for why the light is on. The instructions written by jriga to reset the light worked perfectly.

I am sure that any SRS issue should be free of charge at the dealer since from what I remember, the SRS system and the Seatbelts have a lifetime warranty regardless of miles.

I had my SRS light on not too long ago and it turned out it was a computer that went bad under the seat or in it or something like that. Either way, when I walked in there to take a look at it, the pass side seat was apart and they were replacing something in there.

ALL DONE FOR AT NO CHARGE!

Local dealer's service department is horrible. Told that only the seatbelts are covered under the lifetime warranty. They want a hundred bucks to plug their reader into the OBDII for 10 seconds...
