rear view mirror

i drove in my car this morning and the rear view mirror looked just normal but when i came back to it a few hours later it was all tinted except for an oval shaped part in the middle. i didn't know how that happened, but i had to get to work so i just parked it after i got there. when i got in my car a few hours after that i noticed that most of the "tint" on the mirror was gone but there was quite a bit of sticky tar-like substance all over my shift gate. when i tried to wipe it off, it stripped some of the silver coating off the shift gate as well. now everything looks like crap. anyone know what happened at all? here's a picture of what the mirror looked like in the afternoon...

nasty....what sucks is that you cant just buy that siver trim piece, you either have to paint it (i painted mine black) or buy the whole shifter assembly....well according to my dealership.

Weird. Mine just flat out doesn't work. Otherwise, it's fine. What the hell is in it that can leak?

This is a pretty common problem on the CL. If your car is still under warranty they will replace it for you.
This happened right after I bought mine, although mine never leaked onto the sfiter surround.
Even if you are not still warrantied, your dealer may still honor this because the defective part caused damage to another part. This is not something you could have prevented.

some kind of liquid that makes your rear view mirror to dim at night from headlight of a car behind you.
right now my mirror looks like buiyahkah's
I hope it won't leak......
that would suck big time.....

i'd suggest that you cover up your shift gate with a terry towel or something just in case...a little bit of it also got on my passenger leather seat and onto the black plastic parts surrounding the shift gate. its a real big mess...

Has anybody replaced their mirror? I need to replace mine, it looks like buiyahkah's but nothing has leaked out. $88.00 seems reasonable but I don't want to get a new one and have it leak all over everything. Has Acura or whoever makes the mirror fixed the problem?

Damn I just checked, I had 75081miles when I took it in. They said it was out of the warranty but didn't tell me about the 75K part. I alost asked about it when the tranny was replaced thinking they'd hook me up but again they said no. I have about 85k now. The windows are tinted and the dark spot turned into a thin line at the bottom and no leaks so i've learned to live with it.

I'd like to get a new mirror but I'd rather have a inoperative one that doesn't leak than a new one that might leak in the future.

I just called my dealer and they said no. So I called "the other dealer" and didn't mention it but asked if Acura would cover it. They said to bring it in Fri. morning and they'd check it out and call Acura. Not sure if they will cover it or not 'cause they just did a free headlight bulb and invertor for me for free. BTW, my car has 53.9K on it and it's a 2001. I'll let you guys know how it went on Fri.

auto-dimming mirror ownage... they can leak..

you got a booming stereo system in your car?

The liquid is some kind of toxic stuff if I remember correctly... so make sure you do not lick your fingers when you eat those french fries in traffic...

do a search, there are plenty of threads that explain how to replace the mirror... that is if you are dead set on having the auto-dim feature.

good luck

Yea I'd say just get a wide angle Rear View Mirror. The Auto Dim isn't that great of a feature.
