rear muffler delete

I've just recently unbolted my rear mufflers from the y pipe and just left it like that. I'm pretty satisfied with the sound but I was wondering what the effects of this are to how the engine runs, gas mileage, performance. I've heard that it'll start spewing black smoke because the valves Wont close due to a lack of backpressure. will this have a negative effect on the engine long term? Will the life of the engine be shortened? And will this make the car run rich as that's what it seems to be doing. BTW I have a 2002 Cl type s with 157000 miles if that's relevant at all.

I've got spacers in between the rear mufflers and the pipe , no problems . Someone else was running straight pipe instead of mufflers .

Did you notice a decrease in gas mileage? Cause idk if I was pressing on the gas more to hear the noise or if the MPG really did go down but it seems like it's gulping up more fuel than before, I can sense some more low end torque though. Also does anyone know if this affects any sensors and the air fuel ratio at all?

Generally removing the mufflers will result in a loss of torque with a very small gain in high end HP. Then again with minimal mods one won't see any high end HP as the stock exhaust flows pretty decently to begin with.

Hmm interesting, would adding straight pipes after the y pipe change anything compared to just having open y pipes like I do now?

It will give you good sound with out having to do a full exhaust.
Cost me 120 to have mine made.

Bad gas mileage is from wanting to hear the sound, I'm gonna say . Cause even when people go full exhaust they get worse fuel economy cause you wanna hear that vtec.

So it's not from loss of power and therefore having to press on the gas more to accelerate?

vtech got quieter after the exhuast mod.. the change over LESS noticable cause the car is already loud. vs bbefore it goes from hmmm to WAAAAAAAAAAAA.

so if u wanna hear vtech, and have the car sound oem (ish) then just to CAI and headers.

Put your mufflers back on and you'll get more torque back. Meaning you'll need to rev up the engine less and get better gas mileage.
If you like the extra sound. Get 2 washers and put them on one muffler. I did that before and was satisfied with the extra sound but wanted to lose minimal torque/back pressure.

lol that's soo ghetto tho really.. i would feel like a chump driving around like that.

oh wait.. i was, i had a hole in each of my mufflers at the top (the side that faces the trunk of the car... not the ground) car sounded pretty much like a g35 just less DUMB lol..

but once i found i had holes, ordered the ct mufflers... when i installed them i barely noticed a difference in sound cause i had holes in my old mufflers which made them louder..

anyways i would just get the ct mufflers. then u aint ghetto and u will have a sexy look rear end to boot.

and who knows you may take off the muffler(s) to find a hole or 2 just as i did..!!!

and to all of you whose car sounds a bit like a g35... YOU have a hole in ur muffler at the least LOL.

i drove around for 2 years before even figuring it out... god what an idiot i felt like.. i even dynoed my car like that.. whata shame

Hey i did this about 2 weeks ago, but i didn't notice a decrease in fuel economy. I believe it is from wanting to hear that VTAK all day.

Low end torque loss was noticeable, but gains from high end were slightly noticeable, I would leave this set up if you like the sound because unless your VTAK-ing all day, you are most likely in your low end torque city driving.

I'm thinking that the little loss of low end might affect city fuel economy since we would be in that range most of that time, i however did not notice much of a difference i still average about 20 (6 speed, shifting under 3k, and occasional VTAK)

If you have money you can get it straight piped but i think that's just for looks or less hassle if a cop pulls you over, you can always say look i have a muffler but i put it in the middle of my exhaust (the mid muffler), though i have not tried to persuade any cops like that.

I humbly agree here is how it sounds on my car without the mufflers,

excuse the delayed shifting as it was my 2nd week of driving stick.

I have yet to make another video, might do it today! I put the stock mufflers back on and VTAK is wayy more noticable!

I have a magnaflow resonator with 2.5 in straight pipes all the way back. No mufflers. Sound is pretty loud, but deep tone. I have a noticeably sensitive throttle now with great pull through the gears
