rear brake noise

I'm getting a noise from my passenger rear brake. It's in a pulsing fashion, the noise, i don't feel any change in movement of the car like i did with the warped front rotor. I took it in to a shop and they said it was the edge of the thin metal plate that's in the calipers that was grinding up against some rust on the rotor and not to worry. Kind of hard to describe, but I'm sure if u've painted your calipers or worked on your brakes or took a good look at your brakes you've see that metal plate that I'm talking about! I'm not sure what the function of that metal piece is. Has anyone else had this issue? any easy solutions? That noise that it makes is starting to get on my nerves! It was pretty cool of the guy at the brake shop not to make up some BS and say I need to replace parts! Oh yeah, I only hear the noise when I'm halfway on the brakes (ie. when I'm slowing down to turn or to stop at a light.) If I stomp on the brake I don't hear anything.
