Random Technology Cat for CLS

So, I've done some research and it seems ppl have mixed results on the rt catalytic converter. I already bought one from excelerate but havent installed it yet. So basically, there is hp to gain but torque to lose. I talked to rt and here's what they said:
As the saying goes, "there's no free lunch", but one of our high flow converters comes close. Typically, we see an increase of at least 5 horsepower at the wheels with our converters. The loss of torque is actually more theoretical than actual. In theory, it results from a reduction in back-pressure, but with the relatively small diameter of the exhaust pipes used on Acuras, there's still plenty of back pressure in the system. If you were talking about a truck, that was under heavy load at very low engine speeds, you MIGHT notice a loss of low speed torque. In a vehicle like a CL, it's really not an issue. I've attached a dyno test we ran on a Civic so you can see that the power increase is across the board, not just at the top end.

What do you guys think?
Oh, and I was thinking about getting an Apexi Neo and having it tuned; worth it or not?

Anytime you increase exhaust flow with headers, mufflers, cat back, bigger pipes & hi flow cats your going to lose back pressure to some degree. I agree with their assessment. Some cars notice it more then others.

I noticed only power gains, but a slight rasp sound wise. I would still use mine if I didn not lend it to a friend and have him sell the car with it on it.

it looks like this cat is CARB legal in all states but California.
this is what's kinda kept me from adding this on. i just might do this if Power Rev's IM mod falls through.

CARB = California Air Resources Board. It can't be CARB certified and not be legal in California.

nevermind my post.
this post was from Excelerate in his thread for this catalytic converter.

MagnaFlow/CarSound also makes a direct fit high flow cat for the CL that's 50 state legal. I have the 49 state legal version (about $100 cheaper) and noticed nothing but gains. Plus the inlet/outlet size is 2.25" as opposed to RT's 2" inlet/outlet.

Still not sold on the Apexi unit on a NA motor, although +5hp isn't bad at all.

No cat technically is legal if its high flow and being put on a car thats not 7 years old or older.

What it means is that legally the cat on paper will not pass, but visually and smog it will. I managed to pass smog with it on my car at a CA smog place, they couldn't tell that it was aftermarket and in the end I barely passed, my hydrocarbons were 1ppm off from not passing.

From my experience with the Magnaflow cats I don't think it's any better then a stock 1. I've gotten few direct fit replacements from them for other cars, & there's been zero difference in performance. They were the same size & fit as the originals.

The RT cat is a great addition to anybody who is doing exhaust mods. A free flowing exhaust worked great for my CL-P.

I thought the cat worked and its sad that my friend sold his car with my cat still on it, I do however think that maybe the inlet and outlet opening size could be bigger then thd 2.0" they copy from stock.

Does anyone remember what size the Comptech header outlet ID was? Is it 2.5"?

^Neither "should", but I've read instances where they have. I haven't had any CEL's as of yet. It's a simple fix if you do get one, though. Just purchase an o2 sensor bypass plug and replace the rear o2 sensor located in the cat (primary is located in the down pipe).

XS was 2.5"? i highly doubt that since comptech is 2" and that's what everyone copied.

i dont think thats possible, even if you are running aftermarket headers which are funneled through a 2" downpipe, to a 2" RT cat, i think there is more than enough backpressure there. i dynoed almost 220 lb-tq w/ the RT Cat on an auto AND my A/F wasn't right, so there is probably more power to be made.

so if i just ugrade to a RT with no header, exhaust, or intake I should still see gains on both hp and tq then.

Magnaflow 50 state version - 42603
Magnaflow 49 state version - 27403 (the one I have)

RT - PART# 184-20002

I wouldn't worry about CEL, doesn't happen to everyone (including me). If it does you can buy a o2 bypass/simulator to remedy it. Plenty of people use them on OBDII cars to "trick" the ECU into only reading the primary sensor (like those who run test pipes or hollowed cats).

You can buy them on eBay or from performance muffler shops. About $25 or so.

^ thank you very much for the info. now here's the story, my cat went bad and i went to the exhaust shop and had then replace it with a straight pipe. now my car sounds like a civic because i have XS headers and HKS draggers and the resonater removed and also replaced with a straight pipe.
i def need to put some sort of a cat because i can't take it no more. and the CEL IS KILLING ME.

what is a better buy the RT or the MAGNAFLOW and what sounds better.
