Radiator/Engine fan: when does it trigger.

I noticed that mine didn't turn on until I started the car and was backing out my garage. It was spinning harder than normal.

Shouldn't it come on to cool the engine even if the car was off??

I'll check the Helms manual for the set point but most only cut the fan on high when the car is off when the temps get above a higher threshold. For most vehicles there are several ranges: low speed fan at about 205, 220 or when the AC is on cuts on the high speed fan and then about 220 - 225 cuts on the low speed fan when the car is off. Most will cut the fans above a certain speed such as 35 MPH.

Most will cut off by 190.

BTW, these numbers are just guesses based on other vehicles...
